how the fuck do you lose a D2X... thats like losing a car. the thing is large and expensive. i think if i had one it'd never leave my pants unless i was taking a picture...

thats right i said it... never leave my pants... i'd have it in the front so i could feel more manly.

100% crop, no noise reduction aplied anywhere. Also, using Nikon Capture, I bumped the EV 1/3 stop so that would bring even more noise, so it is basically an ISO 2000

Just how it turns out. There was a bunch of change and a picture frame behind it, but they didn't show up since it was dark enough.

Actually, I know what happened. From that angle, all I could see other than the bottle was the wall. I metered to the glare spot in the bottle, so everything is a bit underexposed which is why the white wall looks black.

Yeah, there was an empty room behind her with a wall at the other end. Since the wall was so far away and dimly lit, I exposed for her face, which underexposed the wall. Same type of thing.

True that. The 30D has supposedly a new and bombass spot metering system.

matrix metering is awesome in most situations, but if you do anything with backlighting spot is the way to go. Center-weighted metering has actually become my most used metering mode outdoors if I use aperture priority.

the f# is the size of the aperture
smaller number = larger aperture (the opening in the lens through which light passes)

yeah that's pretty basic, i'm sure someone else will have more to say

That is kind of a lot to get into. f/#.# is the f number, or f stop. It is the opening in the lens. A small f number means a larger opening, which allows more light in. This is why you want a low f# (commonly referred to as fast lenses) for shooting in low light. The larger opening allows for more light, which allows for a faster shudder speed. Also, a smaller f# will make the DOF (depth of field) very shallow. If you want to take a picture with everything in focus and sharp, use a really high f#. Get it?

its crazy that something as "basic" or "elementary" as f-stops are so complicated really. any question about aperature is a good question, because that is basically asking about the foundation of the "photography" building. and its always good to know what the foundation is made out of... no matter how high the building is.

ok sorry for the metaphor. it was accidental.

as per chocolatervh's suggestion, i'll post some pics, though

1.) i'm a MAJOR n00b at this so my pics will suck
2.) i'm using a lumix dmc-fz30, which isn't technically a DSLR
3.) i've cropped all my images so they'll fit, and they're the jpegs created by the camera, so they look worse than the RAW (converted into DNG) files

bees on my parents' farm:

my brother burning his senior paper from high school since he graduates tomorrow

hail from a couple of weeks ago

snake that crawled into one of my mouse cages and ate one of my pregnant breeders

rose in my girlfriend's parents' garden

as i mentioned, i'm a huge n00b at this, and so i'm still practicing and learning about the different settings (the fz30 has a full-featured manual mode)...feel free to criticize, comment, or suggest anything, though i think i really just need to practice a lot more because these pictures aren't that great, i know

Some shots from the cemetary the other day.

The other night my buddy and I had the idea for this collage. It was my first attempt at any "artistic" postprocessing. It came out "meh" but at least I got some practice.

At the risk of sounding analog, does anybody know of a place that develops and prints 120 format film? I've been messing around with my Holga some this week and don't want to bother developing it myself. I don't have the stuff to make prints, either.

Not a clue dude. If you're a member of Flickr, there are a bunch of people on the Raleigh group that have Holgas. I can message one of them to ask if you aren't on that site.

http://www.cpq.net/ does all of our 120 stuff, and does a great job on proofs and reprints. We go through 80-100 rolls a week and get stuff back in about 7 days, including shipping both ways.

Any reason to get that one over, say, this one: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3302&navigator=6

...which I have found for a better price
