rwoody, how did you like Collapse? I've been off-and-on reading one of Diamond's other books, Guns, Germs, and Steel and have found it to be pretty interesting.

Currently reading:

Entertaining so far, and makes me realize how little I know about wine.

i love diamond so i might be biased. i read GG&S too, and Third Chimpanzee. I got through Chimpanzee the easiest b/c in GG&S and Collapse, he tends to slam home point by giving tons of examples. Good technique for persuasive writing, but it can get repetitive and tough to get through.

GG&S is mostly about how societies diverged and became so different. If you are into environmental stuff, Collapse is great. Third Chimpanzee is good if you care about how humans became humans.

^^Also reading Blink. It's pretty good. I kind of expected most of it to be horseshit, but it seems fairly concrete.



Finished The Blind Watchmaker. It was great, but I had two slight problems with it.

1. Dawkins dedicates several chapters to arguing against what seem to be (currently) nonexistent dumbass positions. Maybe they were relevant 20 years ago when it was written, but I felt like an innocent bystander to a soapbox debate or something.

2. He writes some programs to prove a few points and they're okay, but they're not that amazing by today's standards. Dawkins, though, creams his pants for a few dozen pages. This is what I get for reading 20 year old books.

If you've read freakonomics, there's a chapter about the organizational structure of gangs, and references work done by Sudhir Venkatesh. This is his book about she same research. The freakonomics chapter left me wanting for more, and so far it's a good read.
