excessive blocking? I see more blocking at daytona/Talladega than what juan did today. he did ONE move to the inside, something you can do in any level of racing. It was truex's job to stay off his bumper. if juan had turned back to the left across the track then there would have been caues to bitch about blocking. 8/12/2007 7:04:15 PM |

Back when everyone was wondering where Earnhardt Jr would wind up in 2008, Joe Gibbs Racing was almost immediately dismissed because JGR said that they would not allow Budweiser as a sponsor. However when Jr announced that he was going to Hendricks, it wasn't long before Hendricks mentioned that their contact with Pepsi prevented another Hendrick car being sponsor by an alcoholic beverage.
So this got me thinking. I wonder if the real reason Earnhardt didn't wind up at JGR was the strong possibility that Toyota would be fielded by JGR in 2008. 8/21/2007 1:23:39 PM |

Assuming everyone at the very worst is start every race with no penalties:
Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, and Tony Stewart are qualified for the Chase.
1st with max leader points = 190 points 43rd = 34 points
Max difference between two starting, non-penalized drivers possible = (190-34) * 3 = 468 points
We could be looking at Richmond being pretty pointless once the green flag flies. Bet that's got Brian mad. Not to mention Dale Jr. missing again. You know Dale, the entire reason he increased the size of the Chase field was for you...

Casey Mears to transfer to the #5 Kelloggs/CARQUEST chevy in 2008 as Dale Earnhardt Jr. will take over the #25
on ESPN2's NASCAR Now Monday night, it was reported that Mountain Dew/AMP would probably be 55% of the races and National Guard would be 45% of the races for Dale Earnhardt Jr. There would be no problem with Navy being the sponsor of Dale Jr's #88 Busch team, but don't expect to see Earnhardt in a National Guard Busch car.(9-4-2007)

wanted to repost this from vinylbandit, i felt it was wasted on the 'DALE movie' entertainment thread and brings up some sentiments i've felt for a long time now
Quote : | "You can say it's smarter to hold your temper all you want, but NASCAR at the Cup level has gone completely away from what NASCAR is at the local level, and it's starting to show in attendance and coverage. The novelty is gone for a lot of casual fans that have been picked up in the past decade, and the people who make up the real fanbase have moved back to the grassroots level because Cup has turned its back on them while chasing dollars. THERE IS NO MOTHERFUCKING SOUTHERN 500...THAT IS WRONG ON TOO MANY LEVELS TO LIST.
I understand that you have to sacrifice the Smokey Yunick approach to racing in order to achieve parity and maximum safety, but the fact that NASCAR has legislated all of the personality out of Cup is really going to bite them in the next few years. Dale Earnhardt was a villain in his day; I remember how mad I was when he planted Terry Labonte at Bristol and then had the balls to throw the "rattle his cage" line, but at the same time I always respected him. The closest you have now is Stewart and Busch. Busch is just sort of a bland, cheap sort, and Stewart's got the will to win that Earnhardt had and the balls to speak his mind, but that mind is very often focused more on less honorable complaints.
I know I'm just rambling, but as someone who grew up in a road racing family that still had respect for the competitors in NASCAR and their individual spirits, it makes be both sad and angry that most, if not all of that is gone now." |

I have to agree.
You cannot keep the rustic charm that NASCAR had though and make a lot of money. NASCAR always has been a business. It's just that nowadays that business has the potential to make millions upon millions of dollars and is the #2 racing organization in the world. 20 years ago you could make an argument it wasn't even the #2 racing organization in the United States.
Earnhardt was the man mainly responsible for that rise. Jeff Gordon was a major part as well, but here's a guy that didn't even graduate high school and he became a Southern icon. I never liked Earnhardt, I booed at the top of my lungs when I heard his name. But I respected the man and his love him or hate him nature just added to his mystique.
We as racing fans just need to realize that that good ole boy era of NASCAR is gone, appreciate it for what it was, and realize it cannot come back, sort of like kayfabe in wrestling (NASCAR's rise in many ways mirrors pro wrestling as far as going from carnival fodder to a multimillion dollar business controlled by one family). It was a period where something small became large, and those of us that watched racing in the late 1980s and through the 1990s got to see something special in that increase in stature the sport experienced while it did not leave what made it the sport everyone loved at the time.
My favorite driver was always Geoff Bodine. When I was 5 years old Hendrick was opening up a new car dealership and had his stock cars he owned there along with Bodine. So we drove a couple hours to the dealership to see him. I got a couple pictures with him and he took the time to show me the car and the engine. Didn't cost anything, I didn't wait in line. I even managed for two seconds to grab a bag of Levi Garrett, Bodine's sponsor (it was quickly taken away from me by a person running things, I had no idea what Levi Garrett was).
We just need to realize that the likes of the Busch brothers would never do that. The drivers have become politically correct clones because they are no longer representing themselves but corporations. The only way to return to that rustic charm is for the sport to decline and racing going back to a southern/midwestern thing (somewhat like what the NHL is doing, although the NHL brass are fighting it tooth and nail). I'm not sure if that's possible. And I imagine a lot of those fans will just stop watching just cause they do not recognize the sport anymore.
