sd quality is poorer, especially playing back on the DVR.

It is a bit expensive on a monthly basis, especially compared to TWC's recent specials. But we switched anyway.

Discerned benefits from a new customer:
faster menus and content swaps (TWC can be painfully slow)
lower internet ping (89ms avg compared to TWC's 220ms avg)
common DVR
more HD channels
cash back

drawbacks:
fewer channels overall
costs more per month (especially with TWC's current specials)

Question: Does anyone know if you can plug an external hard drive into the USB port(s) on the U-Verse DVR?

i will say that our DVR gets filled much faster on U-verse than it did on TWC. but the only reason for that is that i'm recording more shows in HD versus SD because there's more HD channels to choose from. more HD recorded shows means it fills up faster.

^^no, it looks much better than twc
^^^wat? we have a ton more shows recorded with uverse compared to twc - and all in HD. With TWC we couldn't keep whole seasons of more than like 2 shows. with uverse, I must have hundreds of shows recorded.

are you joking? many companies care about the BBB... and to show that... I just got a call from AT&T due to my BBB complaint. I'll be getting another year of free HD now. So yeh, you just go on thinking that no one cares and everyone is laughing at me... I got back more than I expected because of filing a BBB complaint.

I understand that now. U-Verse uses h.264 compression, TWC still uses MPEG2 streams like everyone else. So to store the same show TWC or anyone else needs at least twice as much hard drive space.

I would drop TWC so fast if any other company could match the value. ATT U-VERSE would be awesome if they would ever bring it to my subdivision.

install is done

installer was awesome. smart, very professional, nice, did a great job etc. contrast that with the contractors TWC uses who show up in some old ass pickup truck looking like they just busted out of prison.

service looks good so far, not looking forward to the drop in download speed tho...

does anyone know how to change the guide so it only shows subscribed channels (outside of going in the options and deselecting them one by one)?

damn, i'm really missing the time on my dvr

^^ right before my uVerse was installed, I was pulling >20Mbs from TWC, without having to pay a premium for it. the 'pro' (3Mbs) came with my U200 package, and I don't feel like tacking another $25-$45 per month to approach the speeds I had from TWC (without having to pay extra $). I spose I could go to the 'elite' if it's only another $5...

Anyone use the online DVR site?

Why is it when you search for programming, it only pulls up SD results...anyone else notice that?

also on the iPhone app, I can't see any HD channels in the guide. looked through the options didn't see anything. are we waiting for an update or am I doing something wrong?

>20Mbs? Really? Through TWC...I hate to do this, but I gotta call BS. Raleigh offers a max of 10MBs to most houses...

Just upgrade to the 18Mbs with the cash you will save from switching to Uverse.

Call BS all you want, but it was like 10:30am in a residential neighborhood, checked it through a few different sites. Sorry I didn't save screencaps for you all. Believe me, I was surprised too. But that number aside, TWC downstream is fast (without having to pay extra), and AT&T's is not (without paying extra), that was my point.

I'm paying pretty much the exact same amount for uverse as i was with TWC (under 2yr lock 'deal'), with similar channel offerings. only difference (if it even qualifies as a difference), is i had two DVRs with TWC, and 1 DVR and 1 slave with uverse. so yeah, i'm not saving $vermont to put towards comparable downstream performance. in fact i haven't heard of anyone saving money with uverse. the way to save money is to call time warner and ask to cancel your service.

I would be willing to bet you were seeing the results of the "speed boost" shit that TWC has on RR accts. You only get that burst in the very beginning of a download and it does not sustain over a long period. However, if you run speed tests you will see it most ever time.

well sure, if you confine my experience with TWC to just their downstream performance.

I hated their DVR's shitty interface, and it's pitifully low capacity...and their propensity to raise my bill whenever they felt like it, among other complaints. shifty bastards. so far going to uverse has been like stepping off the greasy mobile-home-ran used car lot and into a carmax. plus uverse has a bunch of cool features that make it worth the switch alone.

Wow, someone with actual knowledge on the situation. It's refreshing...I'm used to people talking like they're the authority on things without the actual knowledge to back it up.

you know, you could have saved everyone the trouble of guessing and just said you got 20mb with speedboost.

Quote :

doesn't indicate you were using speedboost...it sounds like there was a glitch that they never fixed with your account...hence my assumption you might have had business class.

lol, acting like you knew about it hell if you HAD of known about it, then you'd know it's called POWERBOOST, not speedboost, and you would have brought it up. hahaha you people crack me up sometimes.

and what the hell do i know if i'm using POWERBOOST or not??? I run speedtests, they say >20Mbs...it's not like I checked a friggin box or something before going online I assumed it was that high because it was the middle of the day and nobody else around me was using it. just like you, this is the first I've heard of POWERBOOST.

My mistake, speedboost was Linksys's wifi tech.

my point still stands. and I don't know what you're getting all defensive about.

and I did know about it because that was something they had right before i canceled TWC but after reading the description I figured it was a load of crap and not worth it.

It seems to be very channel dependent. WRAZ in SD comes in terribly, internet quality at best. However, TNT in SD is easily DVD quality. Maybe it has something to do with how the channels are provisioned, as WRAZ is broadcast so U-Verse gets it off the air as an MPEG2 stream then recompresses it, the two encoding styles confounding each other, while TNT comes down from the satellite uncompressed to be compressed just the once, so given identical bit-rates we get radically different results.

Connection Speed:
• Incoming: 32200 kbps
• Outgoing: 5040 kbps

this used to be 22000 kbps

is this in preparation for upgrading to 3 HD at a time?

^^I think it's just your tv/setup/etc. our HD quality is much better than TWCs and I'd love to have more HD streams
