Finally got my joystick to semi-playable shape for jets and had some truly fun dogfights today. The "stuck in the flight ceiling" business is major bullshit, though. Haven't even attempted to start configuring for helicopters yet. I cannot for the life of me get the free look button maps to work no matter how I attempt to map them, though. I can't even get them to work with just keyboard keys. Anyone else experiencing this kind of problem?

single player sucks major ass, probably one of the worst ever... i mean i might as well just watch a 3 hour movie b/c that's what it felt like. every 10 feet off the beaten path and you get out of combat area and instantly killed if leave the script in any way.... random "space" "e" "right-click" "left-click" "jump on one foot" non-sense during animated sequences... no piloting jets or helicopters, limited weapons, i mean it just sucks hard... how/why they even released such nonsense is beyond me.

anyhow got that out of the way, now to play more multiplayer and co-op

Play Co-Op, makes the campaign much more fun and brings in new features (like being able to fly the heli)

Oh and I think I finally get to start playing again tomorrow

OK, this may be a ridiculous question, but I need a second opinion on this. When flying a jet, is it possible to brake to the point of a stall? I ask this because there's no airspeed indicator, and I can't yet be completely sure that I've got my joystick's throttle working the right way. BF3's flight mechanics aren't super sophisticated, so I don't really know if I should be expecting to see my plane fall out of the sky when I completely kill the throttle. (Although that'd be the best way to know for sure that it's actually working...) I see that while on the ground I can throttle up to increase to just-before-lift speeds, and then throttle back down to a complete stop. I don't really see much difference - even in banks - in full throttle and zero throttle while in the air, though.

^ You used to be able to in BF2, but I believe in BF3 that it automatically has a minimal speed it will go without any input. I think they added this to make it easier for people to fly

of what I've seen, its basically jet speed and afterburners... no control in speed otherwise.

COD SP missions are about as linear, scripted with Hollywood theatrics just like this. I haven't played more than an hour before I was bored with it. Not a lot of A+ titles out there do really good SP games anymore (with a few exceptions). Its either a really good SP or really good MP. SP is just tacked on, but I do wish BF3 co-ops had more than just 6; biggest disappointment. Atleast MW3 has what like 16? And they have survivor mode like l4d style.

I wouldn't mind some mindless/endless hordes of badguys and defense in BF3.

Well what was it? BF2? That had single player CTF missions that you could play against 16 bots or so... that was always fun SP, no mission, just like MP but against the computer.

Yeah I think that was all the "Single Player" BF2 had - just Conquest with you and a bunch of bots. It was pretty fun, I got really good at flying the helicopters in that mode.

yeah, that was me. I haven't played most of these close quarters maps. I run around too much on em and will go 0-6 then reel off 4 or 5 kills then another few deaths. very streaky and frustrating as I learn all the hiding spots to look in

got bored with a shitty team on rush and just sniped the whole time from a far off place. not liking how they do bullet drop, the bullet hits are so small/not bright you cant get a good drop height like in other bf games. also it is sad i dont see a 50 cal sniper anywhere in the unlocks

The M98B is a derivative of the .50cal M98. It packs about the same punch as the .50 cal did in BC2.

Is it just me or have the transport helicopters really lost a lot of their usefulness with the new parachute mechanics? And why is it that sometimes you have to parachute in on a Recon spawn beacon, and sometimes you don't? Is it all just a matter of where it was placed?

So do most people immediately switch to the winning team when you join a server? I'm trying to figure out why I lose 4 out of 5 games I play, even though I am often in the top 3 of my team. I played 14 games in a row, and only won 2. There has to be people out there winning 4 out of 5 of the games they play if I am doing this bad.

^after losing two in a row I usually switch teams or if that fails I find another server. plenty of servers out there so being picky is easy.

I rarely switch teams and if I do I usually go to the losing side or short quite a few players. I just leave a server if one team is dominating the other team. I try to find servers where the teams are fairly even.

So I just had my clan's lan party and we have learned something interesting. BF3 sucks for a lan party game. We couldn't get more than 8 people online before the EA backbone would just kick someone else off, probably due to the fact that we were running all from one IP address (we had a 24 down/2 up fiber). We had the same issue last year with BC2.

We also had random jitter/lag issues when more than 4 people were on BF3, but we had no issues with any other online game when we had all 20 people playing in black ops, mw2, tf2 and such.

2MB up isn't bad, but yes, its still EA issues. We had the same thing last year for BC2 and my friends place has 100 down/30 up fiber. The second we get the 9th person online, someone drops. Disconnected by EA.

Games don't require a lot of bandwidth to play. 2MB/up is more than enough bandwidth to get 20 people online. We had no issues with any other games for online multiply.

BF3 uses 9 KBps down/ 3 KBps up. most Source games only use about 40kbps for up and down if my memory serves me correctly.

I find this funny considering my 'fast' internet cable from 1998 could have handled 10 people online with ease. And that was 5mbps down, 384kbps up.

The amount of needed bandwidth for online games hasn't really varied since then.

they are no less effective than in BC2 using the tracer darts; if anything the jets have made the helicopters less effective.

not sharper, faster; a joystick however is more agile since it has varying axis degrees

pushing your joystick to the limit of the axis is exactly the same as pressing an axis button

I am so frustrated with this game. Crash after crash after crash. I spent maybe 15 hours this weekend attempting to try all possible suggestions which I've read about as helping to alleviate crash problems, and they are STILL occurring. Disabling Realtek audio, updating firmware on every single piece of hardware in the machine, updating all drivers, underclocking graphics cards, underclocking CPU, checking RAM and SSD health, you name it and I've probably tried it. I finally went and completely reformatted and reinstalled, and I've just now crashed twice while testing in low population servers. The crash is such that not only does the entire game freeze up but so does the whole PC. I can't ctrl-alt-del or do anything other than just hard shutdown. I'd appreciate any advice. At this point, I honestly wish I had just saved my money I spent building a new PC and gone with the 360 version of this.
