it only looks reasonable because its only one side. NC State is trying to take the high road and avoid getting involved, but its letting Rutherford drive the talking point and the University needs to step in and squash that.

NC State is the primary partner, they are absolutely allowed to hold those dates. The coach feels that they are important for his marketing and that is absolutely within the Universities rights as the primary partner to hold those dates.

Sounds like the ACC is to blame on this. The football schedule came out really late this year because of expansion, and with Notre Dame joining the conference a year early, Im sure thats delaying scheduling as well. On top of that, the ACC will be playing on Mondays this year (havent played Monday conference games since...ever?), so that probably complicates things as well. All NC State can do is hold the dates and wait, which they are well within their rights and actually obligated to do.
Meanwhile, I think the Canes are just using this to lay down the groundwork on asking for a downtown arena.

That's pretty difficult to talk down. NC, the ACC, and/or the NCAA needs to get on the ball with scheduling so we can make our commitments known and not hinder the use of the arena any more than we have to.

Stuff happening at that arena does account for a shit ton of money for the state.

getting 20k people downtown a few dozen times per year is fun.

i don't think the city should pay for it, by any means, but it's a good idea for the team.

it's also not like downtown stadiums w/ parking solutions don't exist. this is a solvable problem.

even though the market for it does not / will not ever exist, I say we put a baseball stadium where Dorthea Dix is. The "skyline" in the background would be pretty bad ass. Knock down Central Prison for parking?

PNC parking isn't terrible (although I hate the lanes on Edwards Mill that may be either left turn lanes or straight lanes at any time without warning if you're coming off the ramp), but trying to do that downtown seems like it would be significantly worse.
