Is Freeman the new Howell?? He's becoming a rebounding beast...and only a sophomore. Not bad offensive output from him last night either. He's going to get 6-8 points a night just from put-backs at this rate.

they said last year thats the exact mold they wanted him to go after.

and I think he is taller/more athletic than Howell, especially at this point.

Love this team...hopefully they pick up the offense a little for league play but their defense (albeit against scrubs) looks good.

Only his senior year. Before that he was a rebound machine but put the ball down too much, couldn't keep a grip on it...he was a butterfingers of sorts.

Richard (by his senior year) was one of the best players we've had in the past 20 years. Lofty comparison for Nard Dog.

At this point, Freeman is finishing after getting fouled better than Howell ever did.

Gottfried really should get credit for the strength and conditioning program he's implemented. Nearly every player (except maybe Calvin) has gotten significantly stronger and in better playing shape each year under Gottfried. It'll be fun to watch Abu go through the program. With his athleticism, he will be a monster by his Jr. year.

The thing to love about this team is how they get out and pressure the ball in the half court. They seem to have a completely different mentality on defense, even if the competition sucks to date.

We've finally got the length + quickness + speed to force the tempo defensively. Cat, Dez, Lacey, and even Freeman can pressure the hell out of the ball with their quickness. And the three freshmen are all also quick and long for their size, which disrupts things.

And if they get beat, we have Anya and/or Washington there to clean it up.

Hopefully it carries over to the real teams, but I love it so far. Jackson State had FOUR field goals in the first half yesterday. That's insane.

^^ I think a lot of it is due to our depth, too. Besides being able to rotate a lot of guys in and out throughout the game, we had four guys on the bench late in the 1st with foul "trouble" (two each) and still had six decent players that could press on defense and not have to worry about getting another foul.

I have disliked that phrase since an announcer mentioned Tyler Hansborough's "will" about 100 times in one game.

With regard to next weekend's games, can someone refresh me on purchasing men's basketball tickets at Reynolds Coliseum? Can they just be purchased a few hours before tip off? Thanks.

given road games in the ACC are never gimmes, we have 8 very winnable conference games based on early season OOC results:
Wake, @FSU, Clemson, @GT, @Wake, VT, @BC, @Clemson

home games against Pitt and Syracuse are ones that we should probably be competitive in, too.

@UVA, Duke, UNC, @Miami, ND, UVA, @Louisville, @UNC will all be tough, even if UNC and Miami in particular seem to be inconsistent

hoping that with no WTF losses in that first group (big assumption), we can be at least .500 in conference picking up a win somewhere else along the way

12/6 Wake Forest - W
1/3 Pittsburgh - W
1/7 @ Virginia - Ugly Loss
1/11 Duke - L
1/14 unc-ch - W
1/17 @ Florida State - L
1/22 @ Miami - L
1/25 Notre Dame - Close W
1/28 Clemson - W
1/31 @ Georgia Tech - W
2/3 @ Wake Forest - W
2/11 Virginia - L - Ugh hate losing to this team
2/14 @ Louisville - L
2/21 Virginia Tech - W
2/24 @ unc-ch - L
2/28 @ Boston College - W
3/3 @ Clemson - W
3/7 Syracuse - W

11-7 from me. At Miami, vs ND/Pitt could be a big games since we will likely be battling them for middle tier.

FYI for the Reynolds games - the three middle sections of the upper deck (both sides) are reserved this year. Also, you can get tickets to both games for $20 through GoPack.com or the ticket office. (may have posted that earlier ITT)

that might be an incentive for purchasing early if you care about your seats and know you're going

If Charleston Southern played West Virginia, there would be a full round robin with us and Wofford. Oh what could have been.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - After posting a career-best effort over the weekend, NC State's Caleb Martin was voted ACC Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week.

Martin, a 6-6 wing player from Mocksville, N.C., had career highs of 17 points and seven rebounds in a Friday night rout over Charleston Southern. Making his first career start, Martin scored 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting in the first half as NC State cruised past CSU 86-50.

For the week, Martin averaged 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in two games while shooting 7-for-12 from the floor.

Martin and the Wolfpack will play twice this week, hosting Tennessee on Wednesday night before a Saturday trip to Madison Square Garden to face West Virginia. Both games will be televised on ESPN2. "

Abu is a beast athletically...and it appears he has good touch...I just think he needs more time to get acclimated to this level of play. As the competition gets better, we're going to need a little more production out of our post players...hopefully he can be one of the guys that gets us that production.

Hopefully that gets Abu's confidence going. He has potential to be an absolute beast, and he seems to have a good shot. He just looked a little lost out there in the early going. Probably just thinking too much instead of playing.

Was Freeman sick? Crazy how little he played last night. I still think he's our best all-around big man at this point. Best rebounder, decent jump shot, best touch in the post, and best at hedging screens (by far). He also just doesn't make mistakes with the ball in his hands, unlike our other guys.

If Abu's going to take anyone's minutes, it should probably be Washington -- unless it's one of those rare games where he's shooting lights out.

All the big men in general need to work on running the floor better and getting post position sooner. With all the attention Turner and Lacey are attracting, the lane should be wide open. Not criticizing either, I think the offense is coming along nicely, but there is still a lot of obvious room for improvement which is a good thing.

They said last night on the radio broadcast that Gott was looking for more offensive production from the big men (which is why Freeman was left out of the starting lineup), and that Abu was used with the smaller lineup because he was quick enough to guard outside shots while also providing length to still provide interior defense.

Gott may have also been upset with Freeman leaving his man at the end of the Wofford game to set up the game winning layup.

He probably got benched for allowing his guy behind him for the layup on the last play against Wofford.

I doubt this is the actual reason, but this is a message board, so let the rumors run wild.
