I've been saying for a while that the only reason they hadn't fired Butch was because he had dirt on the basketball team. Now I am hoping that is true. But, if he did have dirt on them, then I'll bet UNC was waiting until they could get the evidence to tie him directly to Blake, thus putting him in the SOS spotlight with a potential for jail time.

and, as others have mentioned, one bad thing now is that he out of reach of the NCAA.

I have a friend who's a sports writer at a local newpaper.

I dared him to say something like this:

"What will Butch Davis do next? He certainly won't be able to coach college football anytime soon. Hey, he mentioned at the ACC kickoff that he'd like to coach track. And it just so happens that unc has an opening for an assistant track coach."

And just leave it at that and see if anyone connects the dots.

He of course declined this dare. He's a smart guy. =) But how freakin cool would that be if someone like Marvin Austin threw this gas on the fire. lololololol Then we could jump that fire too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess it's highly unlikely they were conducting a secret football coach search, so the only question remaining is why wait. Why not back in January?

The theory I heard is that Thorp probably needed support from the BoT, which he didn't have until recently. I like to think that it's because they had some excellent recruits that they wanted to essentially dupe into being locked into a decision they wouldn't have made had they known Davis was going to be fired.

\/ Yeah, on 99.9 this morning every other minute they were talking about "two seasons lost." This season obviously and their "National Championship dark horse" season. It's already annoying.

I think it was several factors:

1. The PTB truly thought this would blow over but things kept piling up. The NOA removed all doubt that there would be sanctions.

2. Wait until the last minute to get as much Blue Zone and season ticket $$$ as possible. They're gonna need it.

3. Wait until the last minute to lock in recruits. They're gonna need it.

I know a few people from UNC and they're not too upset about this. Frustrated, yeah, but not nearly on the scale of what we're hearing elsewhere. On the other hand, IC, Facebook and others are exploding with an angry flurry of posts. Why? Because of all the stupid inbred Carolina fans in this state. Wal-Mart Nation!

I dont get why all the UNC fans are so appalled by this move.

They act like Butch was actually a great coach. he wasnt. he didnt even have a winning ACC record.

my guess is that the MacAdoo paper had alot to do with it and that the BOT when presented with the whole story had no other way to go to save face than to fire him.

They were probably surprised just how deep this thing goes. They had no other route.
