Can someone tell me a little about shooting in raw format. Why is it better? easier to edit? are the files large or small?
1/2/2011 6:37:20 PM
Files are larger, stores more data about the photo also has no compression applied to store it.
1/2/2011 6:39:11 PM
^^^ Thank you.

I just figured out something I'm going to have to play with more.I can get my D40 to flash sync up to 1/4000. Previously I thought I could only get to 1/800 with the triggers I was using. By using an off brand flash on the camera I can set the shutter to anything I want. Then I can use the optical slave on the other flash and it will still sync!!

1/3/2011 8:56:15 AM
If you aren't going to be printing though, you can shoot sRAW or mRAW for smaller files.
1/3/2011 12:16:28 PM
or if storage isnt an issue for you.i roll around every where with 30-something-plus gigs of flash cards

That Sigma 30mm 1.4 looks niiiiceeeAmazon currently has it for 10% off their sale price bringing it below $400. Thinking about picking it up but I'm not a super pro and already have the Canon 50mm f 1.8.I know it is nowhere close but I'm not sure how much utility I'll get out from 1.4 to 1.8. I do like that it is pretty damn close to 50mm on a 1.6x crop dslr[Edited on January 3, 2011 at 5:35 PM. Reason : dsdasd]

Do you have a link? I'm only seeing it for $432.[Edited on January 3, 2011 at 5:46 PM. Reason : I found it, used IOOFFJAN promo.]
1/3/2011 5:41:22 PM
I posted a link on the last page I think.

Anyone have first hand experience with both the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and the Canon 50mm 1.4? This will be on a full frame body
1/3/2011 6:51:45 PM
I have both lenses but on a crop.but my 50mm fell and is broken hope i can fix it[Edited on January 3, 2011 at 6:59 PM. Reason : .]
1/3/2011 6:52:17 PM
anyone have an 11-16 canon mount they want to sell?
1/4/2011 8:00:38 AM
^^^Both are quality lenses.I know on a full frame body my favorite walk-around lens is the 35 1.4. The build quality in the Sigma is actually a bit better than the Canon 50 1.4. I'd go for the 30mm honestly.^I've mentioned several times that I'd be willing to sell mine, but no one ever actually makes a legit offer.[Edited on January 4, 2011 at 8:03 AM. Reason : .]

Ugh... I'm about to begin the process of migrating everything from Aperture 2 to Lightroom 3. Apple doesn't make it easy, so I'm having to export every single project individually and then organize it before importing into LR. I'll lose all of my edits and ratings, but I'm done with Aperture. It is such a daunting task, and is going to suck.
1/6/2011 2:47:33 PM
Lr FTW

my finger is hovering dangerously close to the "place your order" button on a D3100. Someone talk me out of it, quickly.
1/6/2011 8:14:32 PM
^ how much and from where?
1/6/2011 8:17:08 PM
I ordered the sigma 30mm two days ago, I am giddy with excitement. Not supposed to be here until the 13th though [Edited on January 6, 2011 at 8:18 PM. Reason : Less r]

its showing sold out? thats a decent price i guess but you could wait for a combo deal that includes the 55-200 VR for like 100 more
1/6/2011 8:20:46 PM
is it showing sold out for you? its says in stock, 20 available for me. is that 55-200 lens decent? I know a little about photography in general, but my last SLR was one of the cannons andre aggasi used to endorse, lol.
1/6/2011 8:27:48 PM
well i shoot canon and i have the canon 55-250 which i'm sure is a comparable lens.lets just say the kit 18-55 was the first lens i got rid of but i still find uses for my 55-250 every now and then.
1/6/2011 8:33:15 PM
well, i managed to avoid ordering the D3100, but only because the Cannon T2si has caught my eye. Both are $texas that I probably don't need to be spending, but I need a new hobby.
1/8/2011 8:58:46 PM
^^I was the opposite. After giving myself a week in the field with the 55-250 (Canon), testing it on a couple of shots and realizing how fucking slow it was, I promptly decided to make it a Christmas gift for my parents.Good thing I only paid an extra $50 for it.I still use my 18-55 somewhat often, but only for the shots I need a little wider than my 28-135 manages.

any of you people shoot video?i'm thinking of making one of these....http://www.zazaslider.com/instructions.htmli can't think of anything else short of $texas^2 that would give me similar shots
1/9/2011 1:36:37 AM
1/9/2011 9:10:41 AM
^^^ not really when you shoot wildlife
1/9/2011 11:23:15 AM
What zooms, other than a 70-200, would you use for wildlife? The big guns of wildlife photography are normally the 300mm and 400mm primes.
1/9/2011 12:05:38 PM

1/17/2011 2:49:19 AM
im trying to decide which prime to pick up nexti want a wide(r) angle lens than my 50mm canon and it needs to be fast. i also don't want to spend a fortune i think that really only leaves the sigma 30mm 1.4......hopefully I can find a used one

I ordered mine on the third amazon says it was delivered on the 11th but it wasn't. I'm now having to try and hunt it down through USPS

Clearly I'm a retard and have no idea what I'm talking about
1/19/2011 10:00:42 AM
I did have them use USPS once, but the vast majority of my Amazon shopping has come via UPS. That sucks in any case, hope they find your stuff.
1/19/2011 10:27:25 AM
Did you order via Amazon Prime? From what I read Amazon Prime standard 2-day is only UPS or Fedex, but I guess it could be in relation to how close the destination address is to their distribution facility
1/19/2011 10:44:06 AM
Nobody's looking to buy a Canon 50 1.4 are they?
1/19/2011 12:41:24 PM
