Can someone tell me a little about shooting in raw format. Why is it better? easier to edit? are the files large or small?

Files are larger, stores more data about the photo also has no compression applied to store it.

I just figured out something I'm going to have to play with more.

I can get my D40 to flash sync up to 1/4000. Previously I thought I could only get to 1/800 with the triggers I was using. By using an off brand flash on the camera I can set the shutter to anything I want. Then I can use the optical slave on the other flash and it will still sync!!

AlaskanGrown covered it pretty well, but I'll add a bit. The RAW file is going to store more color depth, and in turn detail, than a processed image does because each pixel is represented by a larger value, 12 or 14 bits in many cases. JPEG by comparison, is 8. This sometimes allows you to pull back some detail that would ordinarily have been lost had the photo been stored as a JPEG. The second, and most important benefit is that post processing allows you to exert control over every aspect of rendering that sensor data into a visible image. If you shoot JPEG, the camera makes pretty much all of those decisions for you.

The price you pay for all this flexibility and range is that the files are quite large, since you haven't discarded anything through the JPEG conversion process. My camera has a 16.2MP sensor, and the RAW files are between 20-25MB each. If you shoot things that require a lot of dynamic range, or you just want to have total control over every image, RAW is for you. If you can't or aren't willing to take the time to process things in ACR or Lightroom or whatever, then shoot in JPEG. If you want to play with RAW, but still have the JPEG option, most cameras can be set to store a RAW and a JPEG at the same time.

That Sigma 30mm 1.4 looks niiiiceee

Amazon currently has it for 10% off their sale price bringing it below $400. Thinking about picking it up but I'm not a super pro and already have the Canon 50mm f 1.8.

I know it is nowhere close but I'm not sure how much utility I'll get out from 1.4 to 1.8. I do like that it is pretty damn close to 50mm on a 1.6x crop dslr

^^^Both are quality lenses.

I know on a full frame body my favorite walk-around lens is the 35 1.4. The build quality in the Sigma is actually a bit better than the Canon 50 1.4. I'd go for the 30mm honestly.

Ugh... I'm about to begin the process of migrating everything from Aperture 2 to Lightroom 3. Apple doesn't make it easy, so I'm having to export every single project individually and then organize it before importing into LR. I'll lose all of my edits and ratings, but I'm done with Aperture.

It is such a daunting task, and is going to suck.

well i shoot canon and i have the canon 55-250 which i'm sure is a comparable lens.

lets just say the kit 18-55 was the first lens i got rid of but i still find uses for my 55-250 every now and then.

^^I was the opposite. After giving myself a week in the field with the 55-250 (Canon), testing it on a couple of shots and realizing how fucking slow it was, I promptly decided to make it a Christmas gift for my parents.

Good thing I only paid an extra $50 for it.

I still use my 18-55 somewhat often, but only for the shots I need a little wider than my 28-135 manages.

good call, IMO...for $150 more than that D3100 costs, you can get the 18-55 + 55-250 and the T2i is a camera that more than warrants the premium

i absolutely love my 18-200 VR...it's relatively expensive, but if you're patient and are able to get a great deal like i did, it's well worth the $300...that and my 50mm f/1.4 are the two i take with me EVERYWHERE

that said, i'll never be a pro and i'm far from a good amateur, so i guess that factors into it
