P.S. You will also learn that when Sesame Street first came out in 1970, Mississippi voted to ban the show because of the mixed-race cast... their rationale being that MS wasn't ready for that

Saying someone is "autistic" is not necessarily insulting to people with autism.

You might have autism, I don't know. But you are definitely autistic. You do have a "tendency to view life in terms of your own needs and desires."

And nobody ever used "autistic" as an insult. We called people and things "retarded" when we were kids, not "autistic."

^^It's a thing, but I am also joking. I mean, I think it's helpful for people without disabilities to learn that kind of language, but it primarily aids the speaker, not the people with disabilities.

And it's mostly just an interesting concept. One episode of Law and Order featured a black attorney wondering allowed to his boss if he had sold out. His boss asked him rhetorically if he considered himself a "black attorney" or an "attorney who is black."

I dunno...it's just an interesting examination of the way we think about ourselves and others.


Are they junkies, drug addicts, or people with substance abuse problems? Does it matter?

^^I have done a lot of work with children with autism. For me, it has just become a habit to identify the person first when speaking of things like that. They are a child first, autism is just one part of their identity. Just like with people that have other conditions. A person with bipolar disorder, a person with downs syndrome.

I tend to stick to the person first language when it comes to things that aren't really a choice. I flip back and forth when it comes to things like with substance abuse (which I guess is technically the same thing, if you think it's not a choice), or other negative identities that tend to be a choice. Like I wouldn't say that is a person with a felony conviction, I would just say, he's a felon.

Although, when referring to programs or camps, I say "it's an autism camp" or "I work in the autism class"

So I work with children with autism in a high functioning autism class.

Honestly, I don't really think it matters which way you use it. There are some people that will get offended if you don't say it person first, but most people are like, eh whatevs, I have autism.

Oh she is the one from Ex-Machina! Heard a Northern European accent in the video above so looked it up... had no idea she is Swedish! Then I thought that last name looks like an Indian name, which made sense because of her dark skin, hair, and facial features.

Turns out she is purely Scandinavian -- 3/4 Swedish and 1/4 Finnish -- and descended partially from Scandinavian nobility.
