Cyanogenmod does it automatically...on an HP Touchpad (since it doesn't have an SD card)...that might be a start

what kind of things are backing up? obviously things like GMail (and GMail contacts and calendar items automatically restore when you sign in on the new device)...guess you can't use Titanium Backup without root, but what all are you trying to backup? Many apps nowadays have online 'transfer to another device' options within the app

I'm done waiting on Verizon, want to root and throw CM 10.1 on there, but not if it's going to reset everything"

my backup (the non-root version) will do what you want...it's actually a full-featured 30-day trial of my backup pro: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup&hl=en

rooting your phone shouldn't touch your data, in any case...throwing another ROM on there will, of course, but only that which isn't on your SD card (so things like pictures and music and downloads should be safe)

I will say the backup program built into ICS? on my GNex was a great starting place. As soon as I signed into my Google account on my new phone the 100+ apps I had installed re-installed themselves...doesn't look like it got much/any of the data though. The system settings it carried over were helpful too.

^ i was wondering about that...i've never really thought to use the built-in backup and restore as it doesn't seem to capture everything i want

since my backup DOES capture everything (including most system settings if you check the box), i've just stuck with it

the only thing that the non-pro version doesn't do that would make me consider purchasing pro is restoring from one OS to another (ie. you can do ICS/ICS, but not ICS/GB)...i THINK you can do ICS/JB, though, since they same version base (4)

i could be wrong in that, though...i'm waiting for JB for my bionic and then we'll find out

In case you just want to customize the call button on your BT headset

Re: Getting Voice Commands to work on Android
?02-08-2012 03:03 AM

Options
here is one way i found on android forums it wont get it to listen through bt but will let the button launch the voice actions app ..

{{I found an app that can be set up to do this task. It is called "Bluetooth Launch", and once you've installed and opened it, you will see a big list of possible things to launch with the bluetooth button.

To get it to open Voice Search, I clicked the Voice Search drop-down, then checked the different options to see which one does the right thing. I'm not sure if it is the same between phones, but on the Nexus S, it was the option that says: com.google.android.voicesearch.RecognitionActivity
}}
credit to beriukay over on android forums ..

anybody ever used this? http://www.bluestacks.com/

supposed to let you use any mobile app on a PC or Mac

not something i'd use often, but I wonder how the performance compares if you have a sweet ass CPU compared to your phone's hardware

^I use it a lot, but unless you have a monster computer, it runs like shit. My quad core AMD machine with a radon 5830 still can't pull more than 15-20fps with BlueStacks.

WindowsAndroid runs 100x faster, but its very temperamental. It only runs on one of my three PC's.

maybe i'll see if WindowsAndroid will install on this laptop

once installed, do you basically just synch by logging into your GMail account?

Anyone have a good alternative to the stock mail app? I'm using the Tesla unread count badge that goes with Nova Launcher and the stock mail app doesn't update exchange read/unread status until you actually open the app and it refreshes. The only thing that gets pushed are incoming messages. Gmail on the other hand updates read status and the badge goes away. Kind of pointless to have a badge if it doesn't go away when I read the email on my laptop....

^^ for reviews: http://www.amazon.com/MID_M729-Android-Cortex-1-2Ghz-Camera/product-reviews/B009PIQFHA/

VIA WM8850 processor (very meh, even at 1.2ghz)
no bluetooth
no GPS
resistative screen (so no multi-touch, which means no pinch-zoom)
reviews indicate 3-4 hours battery with "regular" use and it takes forever to charge

not crapping on the post...i mean, it's only $70...just be aware of what you're getting

i'm not getting one even though the price is tempting, just sharing

seems like it would at minimum be a nifty youtube/netflix player, if you can deal with a 7" screen

So again - what does everyone use for exchange / activesync email? The built in mail client for my Note 2 does not push read status like Gmail. It's really annoying. Is that just a problem with Android / Activesync in general? Or do other clients push read status? Gmail will mark an email read in the background (and turn off my LED notifier) if I read the email on my laptop. The Exchange mail program does not.

I use touchdown by nitrodesk on my note 2. When I read an email in outlook on my laptop it marks the email as read on the phone app and turns off the notification. You can try it for free first before buying the $25 license.

In the advanced settings, disable tablet mode. That should keep it in classic mode. Don't forget to hit save at the bottom.

I've noticed my Razr doesn't always receive my sister's AT&T iPhone's texts. I also got a random half-text from someone who has a Verizon iPhone & it was over the 160 character limit.

The Samsung Galaxy IV looks awesome technically, but I'm really really mad they are using the same tired, dated, giant plastic squircle design language. I didn't buy the last one because it was ugly, and I don't think I can buy this one either. I think the HTC One may be my next phone.

i hate how samsung takes stock android features and changes the skin and calls it "S-blank." but it does seem like with the S4 they are adding a lot of other features to the camera, touchscreen, etc. i hope google is taking note of how much they are forking android with their extra features...
