Nah, its not the same in any of those situations. Of course every coach who has poor enough results will be on the "hot seat", but its nothing more than rumors, analysts guessing and fans whining. There certainly weren't any bonafied reports from "sources" that any of them were being fired weeks before they actually were. And there definitely weren't similar reports from "sources" that they had reached out to particular coaching candidates.
At the end of the day, you can't control what sportswriters and bloggers and fans will guess at or suggest. But a competent administration can damn sure control what can be reported as fact.

I mean I understand the idea that if you have to pay him anyway might as well get the work out of it.
But if you have to pay him anyway then why does it matter? Just seems like you're setting yourself up for more problems keeping him around. 2/16/2017 2:24:24 PM |

These types of things happen all of the time in the business world. He has probably signed a contract saying that they have to give him a certain amount of notice before breaking the contract and vice versa.
Without an actual criminal scandal, there is probably nothing that they can legally do.
^He already had an extension, right? I don't think that his contract ended this year.

It literally never happens in the sports world. Just another example of our athletic dept. doing some inexplicable shit. We have a minimum of 5 games left. WTF?
At least an assistant would have the "audition for major job" reason to perform well and see what they can do. 2/16/2017 2:29:27 PM |

I am pretty sure that that is the reason why they always wait until after the season is over to do it in the sports world. That way the noticed period is negated by the offseason.
The only time that it is done immediately mid season is in the midst of a legal scandal. 2/16/2017 2:31:44 PM |

Yeah at this point in the season I can't imagine there being such a huge financial implication.
Coaching contracts are designed on either side to be able to break them
[Edited on February 16, 2017 at 2:34 PM. Reason : obviously there is a buyout but 5 games probably doesn't make a huge diff] 2/16/2017 2:32:21 PM |

yeah this is a really awkward situation for both parties. not sure why he or we would want that.
I feel kind of bad. I never thought this was where we'd be at the end of this season. I thought last year was just bad luck with Henderson getting injured, Lacey leaving somewhat abruptly, and being young. This season has just been an utter catastrophe when we finally had a deep and loaded (average 4.3*) team. 2/16/2017 2:32:40 PM |

Uh, I'm gonna have to go with no on that one. Les Miles is the most recent example that comes to mind. He got canned halfway through the season because he sucked. They appointed an interim. This happens all the time in the sports world. I actually can't think of a single example of a fired coach finishing out the season--particularly when there are 5 games left.

Are you people high?!? Lol if State "waited" until the end of the season to speak to potential candidates and "missed" on targets you people would have crucified the school.
Quote : | " Because every other athletic department can make a coaching change without their shit getting posted by a dozen sportswriters weeks before anything happens. Now you could still put that on agents and managers, but that would mean that all those people have it out for us becuase it sure isn't a good look and that still ends up reflecting poorly on the AD." |
Not even remotely true lol. ESPN is full of breaking news reports by reporters about this coach is out etc etc, This shit happens literally all time time.
^ has a good point , interim get appointed all the time. I think there's just no bad blood betweeen Gottfreid and the administration. He did good things for the school and overall didn't shit all over himself (yet), and kept us out of scandals (so far). I don't think anyone is saying to wait until the end of the season. It's just wierd as fuck that he is gonna coach through the end. Have an assistant take the helm like every other school does during a mid-season firing. 2/16/2017 2:43:36 PM |

Thanks for for the first four years, thanks for helping CJL, Brown, Warren, Barber, Howell improve. Enjoyed the two Sweet Sixteen runs. Talent level clearly higher than your predecessor. Will enjoy TJW and DSJr in the NBA for years. Did what you were supposed to do: short term fix, win more in the beginning, and make us more relevant. Wish you had worked out. I will be a fan wherever you go. 2/16/2017 3:02:04 PM |

yup. ultimately Gott was a short term fix and while it's hard to totally understand that at the time (and doesn't make the eventual firing any easier), i think most of us probably realized he was a short term solution.

I dont get the Moton obsession. He's a good coach but MEAC to ACC is an enormous jump. His teams don't play an exciting brand of ball and he doesn't really excel at anything in particular. He's also a huge UNC stan 2/16/2017 7:58:25 PM |

WTF happened? I was pretty sure Gottfried was our guy. Someone needs to write a book about this catastrophic season. Is it that he took a new care free lease on life after his health issues? It's hard to understand the dramatic effect that can have on a person if you are young. I wish him well for the rest of the season and life in general. 2/16/2017 7:59:01 PM |

If this is true, then Moton is dead to me.
I really like Wade at VCU, he's apparently an X's and O's mastermind:
Quote : | "Wade picked up right where Shaka Smart left off in Richmond last year, leading VCU to the NCAA Tournament, where they beat Oregon State in the first round before losing to Buddy Hield and Oklahoma. At 21-5 this year, it seems almost certain that he'll get the Rams back to the tourney again.
Keep in mind, Wade actually had some interest from major programs at this time last year. It will be interesting to see if he'll listen, if NC State decides to call. " |
