^^ Don't use BMI. It's outdated and useless.
According to the BMI scale, Arnold Schwarzenegger at his peak was severely overweight.
Here's another photo of me at an "overweight" 170 lbs:

I'd like to get down to 155, but considering I float around in the 158-160 range right now and can lose 1.5 lbs just from pissing, it's really body fat I need to keep dropping.
Not entirely sure how I'm going to swing that, but the bag of Pretzel M&Ms in my room sure ain't helping. 5/20/2010 9:01:52 AM |

Oh trust, I don't use the BMI thing... I'm just glad my doctor validated it was wrong
I'm 5'3". Not in the hips of belly button... Sorry, should've clarified. I mainly measure right above my belly button (my waist, belly button on me is lower I guess), then I measure below my belly button but above my hips. That's where I gain most of my weight because of all those problems I had. My body was producing way too much insulin so it would just store it in my stomach I would actually like to get lower than 34" in that area but right now I'm taking it slow and shooting for a few inches at a time. I think when I first started last fall I was 38-39 in that area.

I never really had any sort of ab definition (obviously you can't see it on me but I can definitely feel it) until I worked out with Linda.. now I can feel abs right around my ribs, yay
have fun with the Biggest Loser exercise where you do abs for 7 minutes straight

You may have to change brands, since the cut will vary drastically from brand to brand.
At one point, I wore Express jeans religiously. Now it's either True Religion or American Eagle, bc nothing else fits quite right.
Women have to do this anyway ... I have gfs in their 30s who would lament that they have to wear a size 9 ... and I would tell them that those jeans are designed for JUNIOR girls. If they would simply shop for even sizes, they would actually find jeans that were designed for their body.

^4 Yeah I was passing out all the time. Finally when I almost fainted driving home from work my mom freaked and I went to the urgent care next time I went home. I ate on the way home from Raleigh, got to Havelock, then we went straight to the doctor. Told him about the fainting spells, and so he checked my blood sugar. Then he asked when the last time I ate was and I told him roughly 2 hours (ps it was something normal, like a turkey sandwich).. Apparently my blood sugar had dropped so much in those two hours it made him all then I got an immediate referral to the endocrinologist...
Seeing as insulin resistance is usually something that happens to middle age people who are way overweight or eat like shit, they were a little confused why a 19 year old was in their office who wasn't morbidly obese.. Yeah I was overweight, but not to the point where I should be having these problems. ANYWAY, since my blood sugar was dropping so badly and so fast, we decided to go with both medicine and diet. PS, that diet f'ing SUCKED at first. The one I sent you in a PM... I didn't eat terribly before but it was a big change regardless. I was on 500 mg Metformin 4 x a day, now down to 2 x a day
And when I went back in January Dr. Lucas was all for me because I lost I think 2-3 inches ni the waist

^^ Sometimes women don't want to look muscular. I recently read an article about extreme dieting in Asia. Basically, a lot of women there won't work out because they don't want to look bulky. But they diet to an extreme to be skinny:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/weightloss/2010-03-30-skinnyasianwomen30_CV_N.htm
Quote : | "In Asia, women want to stay skinny without exercising because muscles aren't considered a feminine feature, says Sing Lee, director of the Hong Kong Eating Disorders Center at Chinese University.
That's why, "when they want to control their body weight, they eat less or take pills" instead of exerting themselves, Lee says." |

frequently on the train there - old men would come up to her, grab her thigh and say "big girl... oooo very big girl"

Yes but women for the most part have the misconception that if they even look at a squat rack they're going to look like this
before they even have a chance to stop it.
This is not true at all never. There's absolutely no way you can even get remotely close to looking at anything like this at all without doing large amounts of supplements and lifting heavy weights for years.
The truth is that women, like you said, are just afraid of the stigma of "looking too muscular" and therefore avoid weights like the plague.
What they don't realize is that all of the tight, fit celebrity women they idolize do more weightlifts than cardio.
And I'm still calling bullshit on G.O.D unless she can produce a photo where she looks "too muscular."5/20/2010 11:10:29 AM |

It's physically impossible for a woman to get too muscular. She doesn't naturally produce enough testosterone.
If G.O.D is having this problem, that would indicate that she has large amounts of testosterone floating around, which would indicate there's a secret she may need to tell us. 5/20/2010 11:27:44 AM |

A lot of women see themselves as quite a bit bigger than they are. So they start lifting and see a little bit of firming or their muscles swelling a bit and they think "OMG I am getting huge! I must have more muscle than other women"
And I have given up trying to convince them otherwise. When I started lifting all I got was "not too much. You don't want to get big!" and when I told them that couldn't physically happen women would tell me "but when I lifted I really did bulk up and it was bad!" and men would tell me "OK, but be sure you use low weights and higher reps to tone" 5/20/2010 11:35:32 AM |

samwise, im not trying to discount your doctors advice bc obviously i have no idea about your health condition and i have never met you.
BUT to give you kind of comparison... i am 5'3" also and i have big boobs and i'm 130. i do not look emaciated
i was down to 126 a few months ago and i noticed a difference (better imo) but i had come down from 140. i think my body is on a really small frame and yes my boobs help me look thinner than i might actually be but looking at my body, i could use more muscle like joie and be at 140 but i'm 10 lbs less and can guarantee i don't look half as tight as she does in the pic she posted!
numbers most definitely dont mean much, but i wanted to point out what 130 on a 5'3" frame with very little muscle mass looks like-- and its not emaciated 5/20/2010 11:46:30 AM |

"Everyone is different" is just an excuse people have for being fat.
Here's an example of a woman with a large frame:
6'3", 170lb, I'd say that's a large frame.

Shooting straight with you isn't trolling.
An example are your "large muscular thighs" you complain about. While I doubt they're muscular (if so, how much can you squat? 150? 200?), if they really are you can reduce this by doing muscle endurance activities like cycling or long distance running instead of strength training. 5/20/2010 11:58:23 AM |

just because a woman is tall and weighs >150 doesn't mean she has a large frame. I wouldn't call that volleyball girl up there "large framed" - she doesn't have broad shoulders, wide hips, or large wrists.
and having worked with sam, I can say that she would probably look weird at 130. I know for fact that she has very strong legs and -although we never did 1RM- she could easily squat 200.

not true. while BMI may not be a good indicator for people in this thread (i.e. those who are fit/workout), for the MAJORITY of America, BMI is a good estimator of body fat percent and obesity-related disease. ]5/20/2010 12:08:12 PM |
