Long thought as a basketball school with high academic integrity, the university is now the basketball school that tried at football and dirtied itself all the while. Originally intended to be the bastion of things to come for the program, the Blue Zone is now a scarlet letter on the university; an albatross around its neck.
No, Davis will never see the $73 million check. But UNC will surely feel the pain.

i'm weighing the pros and cons of all this for unc
and a big 'pro' that sticks out in my mind on this timing is = they keep all these recruits now. where are they gonna go? if they fired butch in january they risk losing a bunch of guys. now they keep them. :/
sorry to be a downer with all this 'good' news 7/29/2011 9:25:18 AM |
jbtilley All American 12797 Posts user info edit post |
^The other pro being they got to sell lots of tickets before their fan base knew that they planned on firing Davis.
Fire him in January like they should have? They'd probably lose ticket revenue. In light of the NCAA investigation it's not like they could have landed a big time coach in the spring that would have sold seats. They sold as many seats as they could with the best coach / season outlook that they could achieve given their circumstances, then pulled the trigger. 7/29/2011 9:35:33 AM |

The timing certainly makes more sense now knowing that UNC got all but one recruit enrolled into summer school and secured non-refundable season ticket payments recently, both things they couldn't have really done without Butch. 7/29/2011 9:55:56 AM |

Good because they have to replace their defensive coordinator AGAIN?

yeh i mean it obviously sucks to have the rug pulled out from under the head coach with only days b4 kickoff.
but man, they have their whole squad, an interim they are happy with, and now all this investigation mess behind them somewhat
we better not doubt them 1 bit in november and come ready as ever. hopefully mike glennon has enough reps and experience to be ready. 7/29/2011 10:26:55 AM |

there isnt a single part of the investigation that is behind them now
The firing of Butch might even make the NCAA ruling worse for UNC since they have claimed throughout the process that he wasnt involved 7/29/2011 10:55:26 AM |

Are they really happy with the interim?
One of my favorite things to think about in all this is how low morale must be on the team. Players loyal to Butch (if there are any) are pissed at his firing, everyone else is just pissed at the timing. And they can't blame the NCAA for that, it's all directed at their own school.
The top players should all be angry they were lied to and all wish they could transfer out. The team as a whole must really be disheartened by how many fans are talking about selling their seats and boycotting the program.
It's going to be a rough year for UNC football. Last year they were fighting "adversity" with innocent Butch leading the way against the big bad NCAA.
This year they're only fighting themselves.7/29/2011 11:13:12 AM |

they have their whole squad because of their dirty dealing, man. None of the players could defect, because NCAA rules wouldn't allow it this late in the game. TO say they "they have their whole squad" is to be willfully dishonest and ignorant. That's like saying that nobody hates prison, because so few people leave daily 7/29/2011 3:12:05 PM |

the biggest people laughing at this, besides us, are Miami fans.
This is the Holy Butch Davis that lied to them, to their collective faces. There's probably been a lot of Haitian chicken sacrifices to bring about what happened this past year. That's why I don't feel sorry for any recruits or the fans or the school. They knew exactly what they were getting with this character (cast of characters). 7/29/2011 3:21:05 PM |

Their perspective is that Thorp is in charge of academics at the school, Davis athletics (at least football), and that Davis isn't supposed to know what type of papers his players "write" or plagiarize or whatever, and I understand that
The problem however, is that the papers were written by his own fucking nanny...and of course he obviously knew about Blake, agents, gifts, etc 7/29/2011 4:17:39 PM |

Even more embarrassing is that the majority of them (at least the vocal ones) believe the it wasn't his responsibility to know about, control, or punish the cheating, the improper benefits, or anything negative.
That makes UNC the best coaching job... ever! No real responsibility, no accountability, and an almost inappropriate level of fan love. Just hire a sketchy ass crew of assistants and tutors and don't make any calls on your own phone. 7/29/2011 4:24:18 PM |

They're fucking idiots for a lack of a better term. Professors at UNC have come out and said that they feel that the athletics department meddles too much in the academics of the student-athletes, and have even tried to convince honor court members to lessen penalties on student-athletes that have presented to them for academic misconduct. 7/29/2011 4:37:47 PM |

Wait. So the head football coach doesn't know that a tutor personally employed by him is writing papers for his players? And his associate head coach(friend for 20+ years) is funneling money to his players?
Sounds like he should be fired for being inept. Or.... 7/29/2011 5:11:42 PM |

The beautiful thing about all of this: Thorpe has become the bad guy in the eyes of the UNC fan.
And now, with Butch being fired, he has somehow escaped all of the scrutiny that he deserves. Instead of fans saying "good riddance" to a coach who single-handedly wrecked the Football program and brought shame to their academic integrity, fans are going to point to Chancellor Thorp as the root cause of their troubles. Football players cheating on tests? Blame Thorp. Football team loses a game? Blame Thorp. Basketball team starting to underperform? Blame Thorp. Roy wants to retire? Blame Thorp. Hurricane off the coast? Blame Thorp. Swine Flu? Blame Thorp.
UNC finally has their Lee Fowler. A fall guy to blame for all of their institutional weaknesses. And the best part? He's not going anywhere. He will always be there to shoulder the blame of things beyond his control. While the football program falls back to the bottom of the ACC barrel, Thorp will be there to catch all of the criticism from the lay fan. And boy oh boy, are there a lot of lay UNC fans.
OH. MY. DAD! I can seriously see this starting a civil war among UNC supporters. I hope this happens. 7/31/2011 9:02:56 PM |

Deems May clearly benefited from a Swahili type class. He talks tough on IC and that rinky-dink radio show he does but then goes on local sports talk radio and sounds pretty neutral (neutered) to me. The ^ deliciousness you mentioned is even funnier considering Deems is the guy who became the IC superhero on why Butch could never be fired because "they were not going to go back to getting 'skull-drug' around the football field." That asshat is eating those words right now. 8/1/2011 12:14:42 PM |
