That sucks.

I think it's hilarious that Apple could not be bothered to fix this "massive security hole" in 1st gen iPhones and iPod Touches. Now if you're one of the millions of people that are still using an older device, the only way you can secure it is if you jailbreak and install the PDF fix released by Saurik.

I guess Apple only cares about the users that have put money in their pocket recently.

on the plus side, I guess every 1st gen device will be jailbreakable forever now.

So this might sound odd but I think facetime actually works better on 3G than wifi for me. I was messing with two phones one via 3g and one via wifi and the one receiving the 3G video looked a lot better than the one receiving the wifi video.

I guess this makes sense as AT&T's upload is 1-1.5 mbps whereas TWC is only .5 at best. Downstream doesn't seem to make a difference. I can get 4-5 mbps with AT&T which is sufficient to receive video.

Took mine back in yesterday & they gave me a new one running 4.0.1

That makes my 4th 3GS in 13 months & this was a "one time only exception" out of warranty replacement. Maybe I really should have bought that applecare plan.

Yeah it's jailbroken. I don't see why anyone wouldn't jailbreak their phone. At the least you get a couple extra features. What's the harm? The worst that can happen? You can always restore your phone using itunes and un-jailbreak it.

With multitasking now on OS4 battery life is more dependant on if you close apps than if your phone is jailbroken or not.

On that note i noticed my battery draining faster with my available memory down to like 75. When i closed all my apps it went back up to ~315 and didn't drain the battery as fast.

-oh on a side note. OS4 on iPhone now supports bluetooth keyboards? That's sweet. So you don't have to be jailbroken to use a keyboard. Anyone tried this? Might go pick one up.

ok i decided to get the apple wireless keyboard to use with my iPhone at work. Everything is blocked at work and i'd like to use gmail/chat/etc and it's a bitch to type on the iphone all day.

Why does skype suddenly tell me "this version of skype is only supported on unmodified iPhone 3.x devices" when I open it up?? It's the latest version, this just started when I updated it today.

That's not a new thing, it's been giving that warning message for over a year now (on jailbroken phones obviously) The message is there because Skype tended to be one of the first/only programs that got broken in earlier versions of the jailbroken mobile substrate. But updates to that by the jailbreaking community have fixed all the issues that broke Skype.

Now, Skype doesn't actually do anything differently on a jailbroken phone, it just give you the warning message. As long as you've updated everything in Cydia, you should be able to just ignore the message when it starts up.

so i picked up an Apple wireless keyboard yesterday. It's pretty sweet hooked up to an iPhone. All the function keys work (volume, brightness, play/stop, etc). I only wish you were able to navigate around the phone with it though. Like hotkeys to certain apps, etc. I'm sure there's a way to do it via a jailbreak app.

The closest thing I can think if is veency. After you install it, you can use a vnc client on any mac or pc (or iPhone/iPad even) and launch programs. It doesn't exactly do hotkeys that I know of, but it does allow complete control of your iPhone. Then again, you'd have to have your iPhone on the same network as your computer at that point, so I assume that's not gonna be an option if you're doing all this to get around network firewalls.

I found this thread over on xsellize that had a couple of neat tweaks that allows you to up the frame rate on Facetime calls and actually upload 720p video to Youtube and Facebook. I just tried it out, and it seems to work as advertised (at least the video uploading part, I don't have anyone to facetime with at 3am). That was one of the things I was disappointed in with the facebook app, is the videos ended up being compressed so bad that it looked like they were taken with a webcam made in 1998. At least now you end up with decent looking stuff.

I had that same problem. I'm pretty sure that what caused it was that in the past I told facebook app that it couldn't use my current location. I ended up deleting and reinstalling the app (which fixed it) because I didn't figure that out until afterwards.

^Yes. Just make sure to sync/backup your 3G with iTunes first. Then when you plugin your iPhone 4 it will ask you if you want to restore it the way you had your 3G setup which will take care of your settings and junk then it will copy over your apps/videos/music library.
