while GISing for a nice picture of the SASB North building (where the Honor Court is) so others could photoshop robbers running out holding bags of money, i discovered this picture, which suggests to me that at least at some point, if not still, there was a webcam or more in the area

so there is a chance the bandits were caught on tape

unfortunately the feed (http://its.unc.edu/resnet/webcams/sasb/) requires a UNC login, so

and for page 186:

I thought this pretty much applied to the majority of every single football team - no offense to our fine student athletes, just saying there aren't too many football players with 4.3 GPAs, a perfect SAT, and a half dozen extracurriculars that showcase leadership skills.

wonder if a reporter asked Thorp or somebody "can you tell about the stolen records, just as far as if they were records of student athletes, or non-student athletes, or a combination of both?" he'd be like "well FERPA clearly protects that information, so I can't confirm or deny whether or not all 30 of the files were a combination of current and former football and basketball players and that zero of the stolen records were for non-student athletes"

And it shouldn't have to be really. We actually do a great diservice not just to athletes but to a lot of skilled people by forcing this idea of the "liberal arts" eduction. I think the college system should be more open to pushing skills and enhancing aptitudes rather than trying to shoehorn everybody into this sort of perceived format.

I.E. it doesn't do anyone good to try and shoehorn an potential pro athlete or a musical prodigy into a bullshit geology class just like you really probably shouldn't force a physics major to take a poetry class.

And while I wish that math and science were pushed more to the general populous the truth is that learning calculus doesn't really do anything for someone not in a math or science. I think its important to broaden horizons and all but this could be done less in a classroom setting with hard grades and tests too.

I can't believe that SO MANY stupid UNC fans still either don't know that it was just an asthma steroid inhaler medicine, or think that that is a performance enhancer. And I'm baffled by the number of them that think a college apartment with weed in it constitutes a drug den or drug ring. I mean that's reaching... even for scout message boarders.

ruh roh, UNCCHEAT season ticket sales are down: proof that indeed we are their rivals

Quote :
"At the Rams Club and the athletic ticket office, UNC officials are trying to keep the support of fans.

UNC has sold 32,500 season-ticket packages, and associate AD Clint Gwaltney said there have been a handful of calls from fans wanting refunds. The 32,500 is about 2,000 short of last year's total, but Gwaltney said that was expected because popular opponents N.C. State and Virginia Tech aren't on this year's home schedule.

Yes, of course they smoke up. I think everyone after 7th grade knows that.

No, it's not something you say to justify their actions.

If UNC points fingers at us and says "oh look, they're hitting the ganj" don't say "everybody does it, get over it." That's just retardedly ignorant.

Admit that it wasn't a good move from our players and move on.

I'm just tired of hearing school yard bullshit from grown ass people.

clempson getting into the act

http://dev.chuckoliver.net/2011/08/what-comes-around-goes-around-for-swofford-unc-clemson/

would be juicy as hell for Clemson to scream bloody-murder if Swofford doesn't add additional penalties to the NCAA mandated ones.

I think we need to add a 10/28 countdown clock to this thread although, we all feel like deep down UNC is going to get off easy.

A lot of people still refer to their SAT score using the 1600 scale...possibly what was meant by a 900 score. I know when I was in high school (graduated 09) the teachers and guidance counselors said that because the 2400 scale was so new, most colleges would still use/refer to the 1600 scale (and judge the writing portion separately I guess) for a few years so they could see how the writing portion was being graded and get a feel for it. I have a hard time believing someone, even an athlete, with a 900 out of 2400 would be admitted. But I don't know.

^^^Except... and feel free to correct me where wrong... the NCAA didn't find anything on Valvano but the North Carolina Attorney General and University of North Carolina BoG felt the need to drop the hammer.

Now compare that with the way more corrupt football program that UNC was running and you see the Attorney General and BoG scrambling and coming out with pressers stating their concern over the evil agents and how they seduce players and what drastic steps need to be implemented to protect our student athletes UNC. I haven't really seen anything from them about going after UNC's athletic program. Maybe that only happens after they deem the NCAA's punishment to lenient.

You aren't going to see any additional punishments, heck what you will probably see is people in positions of authority attempt to stick up for UNC and lighten any punishments.

It's starting to get interesting again on the Blake phone records thread on PP. Lots of coincedences between Marvin Austin's phone number, the phone number registered to a Charity that got its status revoked, calls from Blake to both numbers in correlation to calls with Wichard and Austin's HS coach. Could get much bigger than NCAA if there is money laundering involved.

UNC Honor Court system to be reviewed in light of player's plagiarized paper

Quote :
"Chancellor Holden Thorp has talked to some faculty members about forming a committee to review the student-run Honor Court system, which had its credibility damaged in a recent hearing with former University of North Carolina football player Michael McAdoo and the NCAA.

Many of those who teach at UNC were embarrassed by the initial accusations of cheating by football players who were subsequently suspended from the team. Then, recent media reports uncovered facts that McAdoo had plagiarized parts of a paper and it wasn't caught by the university.

“It became more clear over the course of the last two or three months that the academic mission of the university was not being fully respected in all corners,” said UNC professor of history Jay Smith. “If you discover something by accident, that means there is reason to suspect that, at least, there are other instances out there."

Smith said he thinks a review of the Honor Court system makes sense right now. So does Lloyd Kramer, the chairman of the History Department.

“I think it’s an interesting and important long tradition that goes back to the 19th century here at UNC, but I think that times have changed and it’s probably important to review again how it operates,” Kramer said. “It used to be you’d have a little cheat sheet or something, but now you just get on your phone and these kinds of things are facing technological challenges that the 19th century Honor Court never faced.”

In the week leading up to the firing of former head football coach Butch Davis, Thorp received tremendous support from faculty members. Out of about 90 emails obtained by WRAL News through a public records request, at least 10 came directly from faculty, and all were in support of the chancellor’s decision.

“You took an extremely important stand yesterday, acting in the very best interest of the University,” wrote law professor John Boger following the decision to make a coaching move. “You have my admiration and full support.”

“I just wanted to check to see that you are okay after this whole Butch Davis thing,” wrote Tara Carbonetti, who works at the Morehead Planetarium & Science Center. “Hang in there! You are doing a GREAT job and I stand by you and your decisions 100%!!!!!”

Thorp has come under harsh criticism since making a decision to dismiss Davis – a decision that Thorp said was entirely his. There are forum threads calling for UNC boycotts and Facebook pages calling for Thorp’s resignation. Faculty, however, are firmly standing by Thorp.

“Better late than never,” wrote Lawrence Gilbert, a professor in the Biology Department. “I am relieved and appreciative of this final act.”

McAdoo was denied an injunction last month that would have allowed him to play his senior season while a lawsuit seeking reinstatement of his eligibility and damages proceeds in court. In that hearing, Mcadoo's lawyer, Noah Hoffstetler, argued that his client was being deprived of the opportunity to succeed and that the NCAA violated its own procedures in ruling McAdoo ineligible.

The NCAA was more in line with Thorp’s supporters, saying that academic credibility is more important than playing a sport.

“Mr. McAdoo committed academic fraud. He is a cheater. That is what happened here,” said Raleigh-based lawyer Paul Sun, who represented the NCAA. "The NCAA takes academic fraud very seriously. The university’s facts presented to NCAA show academic fraud. Presumption is (that) there should be ineligibility.""
