^ pretty much this.

ITT armorfrsleep and packboozie reminded me why I normally don't get on TWW on game nights during the basketball season.

^^ We lost by 40 points. 40. points.

[Edited on December 2, 2010 at 9:05 AM. Reason : Technically 39...but if you're that close to 40...then it's 40.]

A incredibly young team got some ridiculous calls and panic set in. When you take away one teams ability to play physically at all while you let the other team manhandle it is going to mess with some freshies heads.

The refs matter in a 1 point game.

A 40 point game means someone got wiped the fuck out.

I guess they don't have a coach to make the needed calls and adjustments to calm them down? Any half decent young team can deal with that. Stop making up new excuses so you can feel better about us.

Guys, guys.

We're 4-2.

7 of our 10 shcolarship players are freshmen and sophomores.

Our best player and #1 scoring option is out.

40 points is alot and the fact that we gave up in the second half was disappointing, but what he said was completely true. There was a statline that came up about halfway through the second half that said wisc hadn't been called for a foul in 17+ minutes. Meanwhile, we had guys on the floor playing with 4 already. That's not to say that we lost because of the refs, but I am certain we would have kept it closer without that bullshit.

I thought about that as well. I said to myself, "if we had lost somewhat respectably, like we did in the Georgetown, there will be a few posts in this thread, but nothing crazy...but since we got blasted by 40, this thread will be full of activity...and rightfully so."

Both of your centers have picked up 2 fouls within the first 10 minutes of the game. Also the officials have made it very clear that if you try to block out or go anywhere near a player wearing a Wisconsin jersey they WILL call a foul. What do you do? The statement that officials cannot effect a 40 point blowout is patently false. The officials attacked our weakest point and took over the game. If Bo Ryan was out there officiating the game he would have called it the exact same way. You don't see a problem with this?

look, the officials had a dramatic impact, don't get me wrong, but not THAT dramatic an impact

we still would have lost by somewhere in the teens had it been called fairly

^^ the foul discrepancy was 21-11 in their favor. With no player on wisc collecting more than 2. Meanwhile we had two players foul out (Howell and Vandy) and Painter had 4 for a good portion of the game. Had we not basically given up the last 5 minutes of the game, I'm sure it would have been worse. Yes, you are right. It wouldn't have won us the game, but it would have kept the loss in the teens most likely. Most people in the game thread predicted that and noone would be crying in this thread if that had happen.

^ I don't think that the refs were out to get us, but it just wasn't a fairly called game IMO.

As far as Lowe goes, the main thing I am disappointed about in the game was the fact that as the wheels were falling off, he didn't use any timeouts. He ended the first half with 4 unused timeouts. He should have been threatening to kick the next kid who shot an ill advised 18 foot jumper 2 seconds into the possession off the team.

It's very early.

7 of our 10 shcolarship players are freshmen and sophomores.

Our best player and #1 scoring option is out. (just saw that he should be back in 10-12 days)

(and yes, the foul and no-foul calls were questionable throughout the game, and they shot 55% from 3)

You sound like a UNC fan.

And when other teams shoot well, a lot of it has to do with our defense. It's easier to make open shots than contested ones.

I believe someone in the game thread yesterday said pre game to expect a one-sided officiated game, said it would be worse than UNC/Duke home games. They were right and that can mess with young kids confidence, especially when we clearly have no leadership on this team at this point to guide them--maybe when Tracy comes back?

Coach has his work cut out for him, but these kids need to adjust their attitudes too and start playing ball.

Regarding the the point shooting... I've said it before. If I can regularly make 6 of 10 wide open 3s at the [old] college line, these guys can easily hit 8. Open threes may as well be layups at the college level.

The fouls discrepancy? Was the same in our favor against FDU. I'm fine with calling it like I see it and I think the officiating was inconsistent but to continually harp on it with a 39 point game just looks silly.

^^ 100% This game was a loss regardless of the officiating however the officiating directly contributed to it being blown wide open. YOU CAN'T PLAY GOOD DEFENSE IF THEY CALL EVERY BIT OF CONTACT A FOUL!

That's just simply not true. Watch shoot-around. The only guy on our team that can consistently do that is Scott Wood...and sometimes Brown. And Wood is suppose to be a sharp-shooter. That might be true in the NBA, but it's not like that in college.

I guess I'm a bit confused as to why the refs had any impact about us constantly being out of position. It's not that we weren't defending well -- I can live with that -- it is that we continually look like we have no idea where to be...

I saw one possession where Vandy and Howell were both at the foul line with their man standing behind them waiting for a pass. I refuse to believe they are that stupid..

^ standing still in an open gym it is absolutely true... Shootarounds pregame are different.. 100 things going on to break concentration.

I haven't been "riled up" about Wolfpack sports in years. If you still get "riled up", it's time to grow the fuck up.

I wasn't surprised that we lost, just surprised in the manner that we did. I don't care if Smith was out, the refs were calling ticky-tack fouls, or whatever sorry-ass excuse you want to parade out, but we should not to lose to a team by 40 points who has only broken 70 points this year in games against Prairie View A&M and North Dakota. Shit, they only scored 50 against Manhattan.

The fact that we only scored 48 is not that big of a deal, but to let Wisconsin almost net 90 in the process...that's pretty damn sad. Wisconsin routinely averages under 60pts a game under Bo Ryan. They blow up in games against scrub teams...which is what we were last night.

Shooting in general is one of the specialized skills in all of sports. Lots of people on this board could beat the average NBA center in a game of HORSE. I think you're way off base in thinking that the average D1 college player could make 8 out of 10 open threes.

Anyway, here is a question. What needs to happen aside from the obvious wins to feel comfortable with retaining Lowe?

My answer would be increased defensive intensity and overall effort. And improvement over the course of the season, especially among the freshmen. I'm willing to be a bit lenient because of Tracy's injury as that has really hurt us from getting a few good OOC showings...

^ of course not but teams like Wisconsin, who we are talking about and good shooters in general will make far more than they miss with no defensive pressure. I'm not saying Vandy or Howell are going to step back and drain 7 out of 10...

Look at the first half of the first half. We were playing good defense rebounding the ball well etc. Then the officials got Painter in foul trouble then Vandy was in foul trouble seconds later. Wheels fell off because the bigs were too worried about picking up fouls because they knew there was no one was available to sub for them. Also when you play 35 seconds of solid defense and the refs award Wisconsin with some B.S. call at the end of the shot clock you would get discouraged. Young team in a really shitty situation and it spiraled out of control.

This.

But I also refuse to believe that our coaches are not coaching them correctly. I just think they lack the ability to call a timeout and figure out a way to get them back in the game mentally.

Also, I didn't watch the first half. Did Leslie not play the 2nd half?

What's the newest excuse now?

Referees are against us

I really don't get it. We lose by 39 and still its not Sid's fault at all. Its not the lack of defense, rebounding, or the turnovers. Its about how the players played with absolutely no heart or motivation.

^^haha, man, i would so like to believe that. that not calling timeouts. that not doing anything resembling coaching was all actually a brilliant coaching ploy to make these freshmen believe in the value of team basketball. he saw it happening, and he let it happen. it was all intentional passiveness by sid. to teach these kids a lesson. and it will pay off. and against syracus we are going to see the best chemistry from a state team in years.

that would be awesome.
