2017 QB Hunter Johnson commits to Tennessee. wouldn't be surprised to see us push for a verbal from 2017 QB and former Miami commit Todd Centeio (who seems pretty high on us) now that we're no longer in it with Johnson.

Centeio says his current plan is to commit right before his senior year, but I think the coaches are going to encourage him to commit earlier(to build around him).

Problem is he committed once already to Miami so I think he really wants to make sure he's 100% sure when he commits a second time.

nothing new on Centeio but still seems like I've been seeing more positive stuff about 2017 guys than 2016 lately:
4* LB Sherrod Greene (Rocky Mount) seems to be pointing to us as his leader, or at least heavily involved
4* ATH/WR Anthony White, Jr. (Florida) sounds like we have him in his top two with Syracuse
4* DE Elijah Concliffe (Virginia) says we are recruiting him the hardest after his second visit to State this summer
3* TE/DE Matthew Butler (Garner) will supposedly be at our first two home games

per 247's composite rankings, all of these guys are more highly rated than anyone we have committed for 2016, so there's that.

Yeah Doeren basically pointed out that winning on the field this season is going to go a LONG way with recruiting. Sounds like 2016 we're being a bit selective and going after some top rated guys that are going to drag it out for a while.

If we somehow manage to land Lawrence, it would probably be the biggest commit that Doeren has managed to land other than Brissett(transfer but technically had to recruit him to come here).

4/5 star 2015 TE Chris Clark (who some had as the top TE in his class) is transferring from UCLA and has an official scheduled for 10/31. he's also scheduled to visit Pitt 10/10 and UVA 10/17 per scout. he verbally committed to both Carolina and Michigan prior to his UCLA commitment, so it seems like he's at least comfortable with NC.

We're starting a freshman kicker, punter, and long snapper. Doubt we use a scholarship on a kicker anytime soon.

yeah the group of 3 we have this year were decent recruits, i thought. obviously they are all freshmen and the FG has struggled.

Kicking is an issue when your kicker has made 1 field goal through 5 games and missed an extra point. Also, remember punting from the 33?

Kicking isn't a position that has a huge learning curve going from high school to college. He's not going to magically improve. We need other options.

Do you really think we're going to pull a kid's scholarship? Do you really think we're going to use extra scholarships on special teamers?

Our punter has been solid, esp. for a freshman. Long snapper has been fine. Kickoffs have been solid. Only knock is our freshman kicker hasn't been good, but look around the NCAA(and NFL), we're not the only team dealing with issues at hitting FGs, but we haven't asked him to do much.

Our kicking game might cost us a game this year, but so far it hasn't been that big of a problem.

Also, Adam Kiker was a walk on, and earned a scholarship after going 13/14 on FGs. He sure did suck more than this guy.

going for it on an opponent's 33 is bullshit and i think we are all in agreement about that. but i'm not sure many coaches in the nation would trust their kicker to nail a 50 yarder in perfect weather, let alone shitty weather. i'm not sure we would've trusted Sade with that in year's past. so that isn't because our kicking game sucks (which it does). that was just dumb coaching. in fact, IIRC, the punter did pin them inside the 10 on that one. so that part of special teams did their job.

but to your overall point, yeah if your kicking game is shitty you recruit over the current guy you have.

I think it's kinda early to say our true freshman kicker totally sucks, even if he has made a few early mistakes. He was ranked a top 10/15 kicker on several sites. We have two other freshman PKs on the roster, so I guess he beat them out.
