the thing is, there's always something better just over the horizon...right now, though, if i were in the market for a top-of-the-line phone and i was willing to be locked into a 2-year contract by letting the carrier subsidize the price, it would most certainly be a KLP unit
the differences between ICS and JB weren't huge (which was expected), though they were welcome...the differences between JB and KLP will likely be more significant (especially in terms of performance)
if it were 6 months away, that'd be one thing...but (personally), i'd hold out for 4 more months " |
Thanks for the info. I'm kinda in the same boat. I'll be available to upgrade in 2 months, but will happily wait another 2-3 for KLP and/or a Nexus 5...like you 6 is too long to wait for me, but 2-3 would be ok. My GNex is holding up ok for now.6/24/2013 2:04:29 PM |

quagmire02 All American 44225 Posts user info edit post |
i suppose it depends on what you're doing and what you're willing to pay...i assume the active is more expensive, but i haven't priced either recently
IIRC, the biggest difference in the hardware (outside of the water/dust resistance of the active) is that the active has a TFT display and the "regular" S4 has super AMOLED...i assume that means that the active's display will be better in sunlight and brighter overall (which makes sense, since it's marketed as a more "outdoor" phone)
i think the active is thicker and heavier and i recall reading that the active's main camera has a lower resolution than the regular S4, but i don't know if that's true

FYI, I had a big loss in battery life with my Droid Razr Maxx over the past week. It barely lasts me 6 hours, when it was normally good for an entire day if not more. The new Outlook app was absolutely eating the battery at about 33% of usage (vs Gmail at ~3%) Removed the app for now (just used for an old email account) and seeing if it gets better. 7/12/2013 2:47:36 PM |

I finally joined the tablet party; mainly because my job has so much downtime in between Blade migration and new remote PC imaging.
First I thought about the NVIDIA Shield, but I didn't want to carry around a 360 controller as a tablet, lol. I do really like some of the features it will have though, like being able to use your GeForce 600 Series and up video card to stream straight to it over WiFi.
I ended up going with a 32GB Nexus 7 ($199 w/ 6 months no interest financing, lol) after comparing specs/features/pricing and I didn't want anything near the size of a ~10" or larger device. Hell I was hoping the Nexus 7 would have been a little smaller than it is.
I definitely have all the games I need/want (everything Tegra optimized that are worth a shit). What are some of the must have apps for a tablet? I see all these lists online and I have some they mention, but I feel like I am missing some of the obvious.
Anyone care to share some must haves? 7/19/2013 11:00:04 AM |

thanks for all the app suggestions
you know I am in IT, you know I know about the upcoming 2nd Gen Nexus 7 then...
it lacks a Tegra 4 and that is a big reason why I don't care about it, not to mention it isn't supposed to change the price of the current Nexus 7 much, if any and it is going to be close to $300 for the 32GB model.

Well it's still going to have a pretty powerful processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro). The biggest change obviously being the 1980 by 1200 resolution. I'll probably pick one up if it's really $229.
So yeah you picked the wrong time to buy a Nexus 7. A couple more weeks and $29 more and you could have gotten a much better tablet. Or $269 for the 32GB version. 7/19/2013 1:59:48 PM |

I told you why I don't give a damn about the 2nd Rev. Nexus 7, get over it. It's not like the new one coming up was a secret and you guys just blew my mind or something. My tablets 2nd or maybe even primary purpose is gaming, so it will have a Tegra processor in it. If the 2nd Rev. Nexus 7 had a Tegra 4 instead of a Snapdragon, I would have waited on one. I also went with the Rev. 1 Nexus 7 because I needed a tablet NOW or even weeks ago. We have hours of downtime at work between our Blade migrations and I was pulling my hair out in boredom since I refuse to join the always connected smart phone crowd.
Yes, the new Nexus 7 has a better screen, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the current screen. You would have to be a real tablet geek to even notice the difference if they weren't laying side by side and this is my FIRST tablet. My main question is if the 2nd Rev. has expandable storage or not. Hell, I can return the damn thing for up to 30 days to NewEgg if I really wanted to (but I don't, not at all).. Did I mention 6 months no interest? New Preferred Account niggas...
LOL, the price just went UP on the current Nexus 7 by $40 on NewEgg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230663 I paid $199 with no MIR and it had the Iron Egg Guarantee on it too (http://promotions.newegg.com/nepro/13-2430/index.html), that is also gone now. Obviously it wasn't the worst time if the price is now up by $40 and I was definitely going with NewEgg (unless it was dramatically cheaper elsewhere) because of my Preferred Account card with 6/mo at $250 and 12/mo at $500.7/21/2013 5:43:11 AM |

Did you even read what I said? I know it is cheaper other places, but I'll pay $20-$30 more than Staples to have 6/mo No Interest. I was simply pointing out the price came up at NewEgg, so it wasn't the worst time, dude to get it there. Also Staples isn't going to offer as much as the Iron Egg Guarantee does (which was also removed, along with the price bump if you bought it now). Hell now that I think about it, I will contact NewEgg and have them match Staples and knock $30 off.
Ah shit, that is only with a promo code and only available in store. With Tax (since you have to buy in store) it is only $17.60 cheaper even with the $30 off promo.

I think I am gonna wait until the Galaxy Note 3 comes out before I make my next Android purchase. I will probably never (like never ever) buy an iPhone and there is a VERY small (like subatomic small) chance that I may go back to a Windows phone, but at this point its looks like Android is the clear winner for me since I have invested in a lot of apps with them. 7/22/2013 7:33:38 AM |

I just bought my wife a Nexus 7 for a good price a few weeks back. I think it was $179 at Staples plus she had a $20 GC to Staples from work that we had never used.. I already knew a new one was coming out but I wanted to get her one now and figured the new one wouldn't have much that was a "must-have" for her. There is always new technology coming out so I don't get too hung up on that unless there is a reason that a new version is just THAT much better.
At $159 it does everything she wanted and at $230 for the new 16GB model, I made the right choice for us. The new ones will be great for the price still though, but there's nothing to make me second-guess my decision.

When most new phones have 1080p screens now I just wouldn't waste money on a 7" 720p screen. The 1080p screens look so gorgeous. When I had a Nexus 7 it was great but the screen was pretty low res for the size. I'll probably be getting the 2nd gen. 7/22/2013 4:02:40 PM |

I've had a nexus 7 since release and lately its been lagging too much for me to handle. I'm looking forward to ordering the new nexus 7 on wednesday. I'll sell my in near mint condition nexus 7 with a dock to a willing buyer for much cheaper than you'd get it now after I get the new one.
Got the gf sony's gs8 GTV box over the weekend. Interface is great, it's incredible responsive/quick, and highly recommend it for anyone looking for that kind of thing. ^You need 6 months of financing for a $150 purchase? And I think the bottom will fall out (especially the 2nd hand market) a month or so after the new 7 hits store shelves.
If you're looking to buy new, I think the ~125$ mark is about as low as they're likely to go at retail. 7/23/2013 11:07:12 PM |

Looks like it's a decent upgrade. Bestbuy already has pre-orders up.
Quote : | "While most of the tablet's specs are improved over last year's model, one of the most visible differences is its HD display. Our experience looking at the new Nexus 7 was very similar to the bliss that we had after seeing the Nexus 10's panel for the first time, only this one is of course smaller. Certainly, a pixel density of 323 ppi is pretty impressive, and we were quite impressed by the amount of detail we were able to see in the sample videos and photos running on the demo device we handled." |
Quote : | "We loved how the Nexus 7 felt in our hands, especially since the original version was a good deal thicker. " |
Quote : | "Under the hood, the Snapdragon S4 Pro chip is also a nice step up from last year's Tegra 3 SoC. Combined with the faster GPU, an additional gigabyte of RAM and Open GL ES 3.0 support, we're left with a far smoother gaming experience with plenty of subtle improvements to the graphics experience in particular. We'll reserve final judgment for our forthcoming review, but we were at least initially satisfied that this new iteration of the Nexus will perform better than the last (especially when it was updated to Android 4.2)." |

Hey guys, I've got what will probably turn out to be a stupid question. Also let me preface by saying I've searched on Google for this and haven't found exactly what I need, and wasn't sure what to search for on this board exactly. And sorry, but I'm not going to read all 189 pages of this thread. So, here's the obligatory I'm really sorry if someone already asked this and someone can find it really easily, please don't kill me or tell me to die, it hurts my feelings.
Anyways, I just got the S4 Active and love it but I'm having trouble with this one thing that will cause me to return:
It seems that when I activate voice control, either by double clicking the home button or long pressing from a headset, it opens up the SVoice App, but doesn't start actually "listening" to me until I press on the microphone icon at the bottom.
Is there any way around this, so that I can activate voice control from a headset and start talking? If not, what the hell is the point of voice control if you have to press a button on the device anyways?
update: I figured out if I set it to wake up on a voice command like, "Hi Galaxy" this takes play of clicking the microphone, but since it says keeping that voice command option on drains battery, it would be nice if I could just bypass this step

Some of the features of the sense phone are lost, like a superior camera to the asop camera, among others.
