i'm pretty disappointed...i don't find it especially insightful, and i've read much better philosophy in a sci-fi/fantasy book...the first book was okay, but not anything i couldn't put down...i'm not sure i'll make it through to chapterhouse if this doesn't pick up soon

Wicked is still by far the best...Son of a Witch was good but not as good...I didn't even know the Lion was out until I randomly saw it in Barnes and Noble.

eh...I'm about a third of the way through it and it's kind of weird. It's not really modern enough for my tastes. I get into it and some parts and then have trouble getting interested in it again.

I'm reading it based on your recommendation haha so I'll let you know if I like it by the time it's over.

I'm am a Denis Leary fan, but I don't recommend this book. It's 2/3's "this is the way it was when Iwas growing up" and 1/3 "this is the difference between men and women". Funny in parts, but it got old really fast, and the men vs. women stuff was not original. Not to mention, it abandoned explaining "why we suck" after the first couple chapters.

so far, it basically seems like a new version of Freakonomics. Gladwell makes interesting observations, and seems to draw way too broad conclusions from those observations. They may have a kernel of truth in them, but the application of those truths seems to be pretty broad in the book....

yeah, well....
I guess I haven't ever actually followed Denis Leary, except maybe back in high school when he came out with "I'm an Asshole" and all the 16 year old boys loved singing that and quoting him.

But more recently, he caught my attention because he is really, really good on Rescue Me, which is an amazing show.

But yeah, the book was not very good. He even had a chapter on the men's brain vs. the women's brain with stupid brain-diagrams for men and women (most of the men's brain is sex, the women's brain is shopping, shoes, kids, etc) which have been floating around the internet and email since the DARPANet days, probably. I bet you could find cave-wall paintings with the same pictures.

Awesome so far - it was written in 1939 and deals with the changes that took place in the U.S. between 1929 and 1939. Very interesting perspective. Same guy also wrote a book a couple years before this one dealing with the 1920's - want to read that one next.
