nope, lost's showrunners have insisted from the beginning that they have an overall plan and only made up smaller details along the way to fill things out. and really the only time lost was treading water was the 2nd half of season 2/early season 3 when abc was telling them to stretch things out indefinitely. as soon as they got a solid end date, things started going down constantly

it's now become apparent that bsg's plan was a combination of "this is cool, let's shove it in there" and "oh shit, that cool thing we did caused a huge plot hole, let's shove in some retcons/god-did-its to compensate"

not to say I don't love bsg, but clearly ron moore sucks as a long form storyteller

Yeah, except I'm pretty much the only person in the world who isn't all pissed off about the finale.

But I think I lost any grip on what most people are looking for from their television shows years ago.

I wish more shows would be written to ONLY run a season or 2 and then end.

DS9 is an exception, outlier. Probably the best long-running sci fi series, and maybe one of the best overall. Of course, it's terribly underrated because most scifi fans have terrible taste.

DS9 had the benefit of no Brannon Braga, and of being ignored by Paramount in favor of Voyager. Great, great show.

I've been watching TNG the past few weeks, and compared to DS9, it is a joke. (granted i've been watching seasons 1 and 2.)

Its best episodes measure up to DS9, but TNG was really pretty inconsistent.

It always feels really sterile to me. The storylines aren't usually gritty or serious (like DS9), and the characters are kind of boring and staid in comparison to, say, Kirk and McCoy.

Ron Moore's Klingon episodes are usually pretty good, though.

I couldn't stand the whole Wormhole Aliens context of DS9. It felt completely phoned in; a side-show.

Maybe the BSG ending made more sense to me because I watched the entire series over a 3 week period. I'm also rarely confused about whats happening on Lost.

^I disagree 100%. The wormhole aliens were the basis of the Bajoran religion, their culture. They also allowed Sisko to grow from reluctant to acknowledge his position as the profit, to his role being his main guiding force at the end.

They were used as a dues ex machina in the one episode where they wiped out the Dominion fleet. that is the only time I felt they were grossly out of place. (and that ferengi episode)

TNG was more about single episodes, where the best of DS9 was a single story line. I don't think you can really compare them directly.

I dont know how anyone could like the whole STARBUCK IS A MAGIC ANGEL(LOL) thing and hate on the prophets. I mean yeah some of the Bjoran episodes in the first 2/3 seasons can be pretty hard to watch, but the overall payoff of the wormhole aliens was a much, much more satisfying story and conclusion.

As for TNG vs DS9, they really aren't comparable. One of the reasons voyager failed was they tried to do another TNG pretty much exactly the same as TNG, but with characters that weren't that interesting. I mean alot of the episodes were straight up dupes of TNG eps.

But then look at another show that did (mostly) single episode plots: SG1. They kind of solved the limited character development issues, by only worrying about 4 main characters. They also started to have larger story arcs later in the series that helped along with notable recurring characters.

So on a scale of TNG to DS9, TNG being single episode plots, limited character development and DS9 being long plot arc, heavy character development (with SG1 moving around the middle), I would say BSG tried to go from SG1 to DS9 and simply failed to make the transition smoothly.
