Picked up a bottle of 1792 port finish. It's priced maybe 5 bucks too high, but pretty tasty. You can really pick up the grape notes

anyone found any good holiday gift packs this year?

i'm not a Woodford fan whatsoever, but my ABC store had their holiday pack on sale for $30, which came with a glencairn whiskey glass and bottle of standard WR. I picked it up as an excuse to add another glass to the collection.

Man. Mckenna single barrel is a really great bourbon. Its the best bourbon with a screw off top I have ever tried. It is a lot like Woodford with a lot of butterscotch. Picked it up in November since it was on sale and was not disappointed.

^ do you mean the 10-year bottled in bond? if so, i agree...it's pretty good, especially for the price

Celebrated my last day at my current job by finishing my bottle of Pappy. Had one drink left in it and I had been saving it for a couple years now. Now I want another.

^^ yeah the bonded. I have never tried the regular McKenna but I liked the single barrel so much I will probably give it a try.

Not directly for Christmas, but I traded a van winkle lot b for a 2015 birthday bourbon and parkers malt whiskey. I really like the malt so far

I'm digging Maker's 46 these days. My favorite is with diet coke/pepsi, though ginger ale or diet ginger ale work too.

Every Michter's I've tried seems to taste similar. The sour mash has too much rye pepperiness to it, the rye's have a ton of corn sweetness to them, and they all end up having a honey butter taste with a peppery finish. It's enjoyable, but I can find bourbons I enjoy a lot more at that price point.

Picked up

Gifted Horse a 4 year blended with a 17 year. It's good and strong 115 proof

Quote :
"These “oops” stories of mistaken barrels mixed together feel a lot like the old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercials...Now, we have another major spirits company, Diageo, releasing an “oops” product. Orphan Barrel The Gifted Horse Whiskey is a supposed result of the mistaken mixing of a 17 year old Kentucky Straight Bourbon with a 4 year old whiskey at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery. "

Also got WhistlePig Old Word 12 yr Rye which is fantastic

Quote :
"histlePig team paired bonds of 12-year-old rye with premium European oak casks – Madeira, Sauternes, Port, Cognac, and Sherry."

and last Elmer T. Lee Bourbon

it's a really great bourbon and price great, if you can find it.

I got all these out of state.

liquor store near me has bottles of a store selected single barrel whistle pig - i wouldn't have been that excited about it except it's barrel proof (121) and they're only charging $8 more than the standard whistle pig. i don't normally have the chance to use the words "whistle pig" and "decent bargain" in the same sentence, but $83 for a barrel proof 10 year old rye is pretty cheap in today's market.

Gotta go out of state or buy online for the good stuff, unfortunately. I got a sample from a buddy and it was tasty, and I'm not even a rye fan.

Some people think it is shameful/wasteful to mix a quality bourbon with soda. I don't see any problem with mixing Maker's 46 with soda if that's your thing, but beyond that price point I can sort of understand where that thought comes from. I still say to each his own though.

Okay, so work has me going to Kentucky for the first couple weeks of May. I'll only be there during the week, so no time to do the bourbon trail, but I plan to bring some home in a checked bag. For those of you who have been: What types of bourbon can be found in ABC stores (or the local equivalent if they're not state regulated) statewide that we don't get here in the east?

I'll be in Hopkinsville, which is in the southwest corner of the state, just over the Tennesee line. Unfortunataely it appears to be about an hour from...anything. But if there's anywhere within a couple hours' drive that will have great stuff that you can't get back home, I might be willing to make the trip some evening as my day will be done at 3 PM.

Suggestions?
(I would offer to bring back bottles but I'm not in NC anymore, so unless you want to come to Richmond to pick it up, sorry.)

Find the closest Liquor Barn or Party Source, those have a lot of stuff. I know there's one in Bowling Green which is about an hour away. Otherwise just check out the small local stores they have there too - they aren't regulated/ABS stores, so there's often a variety from store to store. A lot of them won't have anything better than you'll find in NC, but you may get lucky and find one that does.

^^^ find anything of note? i stopped by Liquor Barn on my way to the derby and bought a bottle of cask strength Makers 46 they had. otherwise didn't see anything that interesting, other than some FR single barrel cask strength (not many places in Atlanta still have any).

Bought some Pike's Rye a few weeks ago, quite good!

two items.

1. Has anyone tried James Oliver Bourbon Barreled American Whiskey? $34 price point and came highly recommended from my local shop manager who has never let me down. It's from Oregon.

2. Going to Baltimore in a couple weeks. Is there anything available in MD that i can't find in NC and should seek out?

i ain't found shit this fall but whatevs, didn't last fall either. thinking about selling my bottle of colonel taylor tornado and buying some stuff on the secondary market, but that would take effort.

was home in chapel hill/hillsborough last weekend, saw a bunch of bottles of barrel bourbon batches 6 and 7 at the ABC store on the north side of chapel hill, near the hwy 86 exit of 40. that batch 6 is good, had gotten a bottle in kentucky a while back so scooped up another.
