Costner- 20min, 1/3 for 2 pts, 3 turnovers, 2 rebounds and 4 fouls. He's been half-assing it the whole time and just got lucky to put up 20+ against S. Carolina. 11/25/2007 10:15:23 PM |

Haha
We committed 49 turnovers, shot 54 for 78 from the line (69%) and had a combined -13 rebound differential through the tournament.
We could have easily been 0-3. Shows the determination our team showed to pull out those games. On a good note, we did shoot 46% from the field and 41% from 3 land for the tourney.
I'm really kind of scared to see how much we'll get outrebounded by MSU on Wednesday but if we can shoot that well from the field consistently, we'll be in most games we play in. 11/25/2007 11:05:31 PM |

Did anyone else notice on the very last play where Nova threw the ball the length of the court, one of the Nova players pretty much rode Grant out of the lane to get position for the tip? He was blocking Grant like he was an offensive lineman in football. Just one of the many poor/no calls on the refs' part. Good thing they came through on Grant's 3. Otherwise I'd have a busted tv because I would've been throwing shit.

I'm so tired of fucking espn wearing anti-red tinted glasses. Nevermind the flop on the inbounds by Nova, or the riding Grant out of the lane I posted about ^^, or the other countless no calls. State benefited from one call all game, but somehow we didn't deserve to win and Nova did? Give me a fucking break.

Talk about media bias, they just showed the highlights of the game on the local ABC station here in Charlotte and when they showed the foul on Grant the sports guy was like "he wasn't even touched" even though you can clearly see from the replay from the camera on the floor that the Villanova player clearly hit Grant on the arm. I even rewinded it a couple of times and was like "WTF is this guy talking about Grant not being touched."

Asshats, the whole lot of them. I say we just get rid of all the current crop of analysts (minus Jay Bilas) and get some new guys (or ultra attractive females) to be the analysts. As much as a I like the energy that Vitale brings when he's doing a game, he's way too biased and he hypes the big teams up way too much. When UNC was playing BYU last night he was all "oh there's too much pride in that jersey to lose, blah, blah, blah, Roy Williams Hall of Fame, blah, blah, blah." 11/26/2007 12:24:57 AM |

Quote : | " Posted: 11/25/2007 8:46 PM The MSU rebounding issue.. goes a little deeper than just blocking out and getting the rebound.
To my eyes, there seems to be too much scrambling around and guys getting out of position. Some of it is communication on switches and some of it is simply not doing a good job of keeping your guy in front of you. Obviously, when the big men are forced into help situations that decreases the ability to be in good rebounding position." |

^the same thing we're dealing with. JJ goes for the block on ANYTHING that comes near the paint leaving his assignment free with nobody boxing them out. Tonight seemed to be a whole nother problem with Nova just going over the back every fucking time down and us never getting the call, but no matter. 11/26/2007 1:29:12 AM |

Hickson should go up for the block a majority of the time because he forces a bad shot. Hickson could pick his shot better and use better technique, but other guys need to rotate appropriately and block out their guys. Grant and costner are doing an especially poor job at this.
Costner being out of shape also hurts us doubly because it's often costner getting beat, forcing hickson to come over on the weak side.
Costner is the key

Yeah I agree.. I watched some highlights of the game and while Hickson does go for the block on anything near the basket, he has to leave his man anyway for the weak-side or help defense because our perimeter guys are getting blown by. Our guards and perimeter players need to rotate down to the man he leaves and block them out. We are doing very poorly with rotation. 11/26/2007 2:54:18 AM |

The one thing we can change that would improve our defensive rebounding the most is our perimeter defense. When we let guys get free in the lane, our big men (Hickson in particular) have to leave their man and challenge the shot. This leaves their big guys free on the offensive glass.
When guys do get beat, we do need to a better job rotating from weak side to crash the boards. It all starts on the perimeter, however. We can't afford to play off of good shooters on the perimeter, but we do need to improve our defensive positioning and closeouts. I do like that we are doing a better job defending the three. Individually our guys have some things to work with our staff on. Javi was playing defense too much on his heels. Degand gave us solid D at times but a bit inconsistent, and seemed to have lapses on a few posessions. He does seem to be improving, and I think he has the quickness and length to develop into a shutdown PG. Grant relies a bit too much on baiting guys in for the block. Horner doesn't have as much perimeter quickness, but could stand to play with a lower center of gravity. Fells played pretty solid perimeter D most of the tournament.
We have a game changer inside when Hickson is in the game. Improving our perimeter D could make us one of the better defensive teams in the country, while solving many of our rebounding woes.
Of course, I have no problem funneling guys to Hickson on a last shot situation like the SC game.
