Actually, while Jesus does talk of helping those in need, the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments acknowledge that there is no possibility of eradicating the poor population of the world.

So, like most things, the real answer lies in the middle of the far left and far right. Sure, people need help, but all the help in the world won't get rid of the poor folks.

But, don't Republicans give more to the poor than Democrats anyway? Not stating that, just asking the question because I thought I saw something about that once (fuck Google).
