i think he has a decent case this year, coming off one of his best years ever and with luca toni, del piero, and other old guys gone. i dont really think the other strikers (di natale, iaquinta, quagiliwhatever, pazzini and gillardino) are that great. from what little i've seen of some these guys, i've never been extremely impressed. everytime i see rossi play though, he seems like the type of striker italy has been missing, i.e. one that isn't always diving and trying to beat the offside trap.

oh, he def has a case. i think this is one of italy's weakest teams in a long time. lippi is holding on to players that are too old, not that he has a ton of great options. still, it's not like rossi was a sure starter. he would have been a rotation or sub player. coaches play favorites. this is only a story because rossi at one time had the option to play for a country which surely would have put him in their squad this year.

Yes Rossi is 23, but to play in another Cup he needs to a) be in as good or better form 4 years from now and b) assume more elite Italian strikers do not emerge in the next 4 years. I don't think it's a stretch to say this could be his best chance...
