i'm gonna withold judgement until this plays out. Fuller was really good as a nickle corner this season. Can he continue that in a larger role? Will alex smith be the 2nd coming of donovan mcnabb for the redskins?

i'm fine with letting kirk go and smith has been really good with KC even though their fans apparently hate him and he couldn't get them past just making the playoffs. Is it all andy reid or will he be good with gruden as well?

Based on the situation I think this was about as good as it could be. Reports say Cousins and the Redskins have not talked since the season ended. I dont think Cousins was ever going to sign a deal based on the situation. We probably got the second best free agent QB (after Cousins) at a decent price. Hate giving up Fuller but he is just slot. Dunbar has done OK when Fuller was out.

Now that Cousins is known to be available will be interesting to see if Washington could potentially trade him before he is a free agent in March.

I’m not 100% in love with Kirk. But I don’t hate him. His whole contract/franchise tag was a mess. I think paying him as a top 5 QB would have been a rediculous over payement. Honestly. I’m just glad it’s over with. Could have been much worse. Could traded a bunch of draft picks to draft a terrible QB.

No you can't the Alex Smith trade will not be official until new league year starts one 3/14. Which means Cousins contract with Skins is effectively over and he is free to sign with Denver.

^ I think the Smith agreement is pretty much set in stone. They've already negotiated an additional 4 years with him. Im sure he will sign on the first day of the new league year. So chances of this falling through are pretty much 0%.

Anyway if KC can trade Alex Smith in principle before the new league year then the Redskins could do the same. There is even the option the Redskins tag Kirk with the transition or franchise tag and then try to trade him.

^ you could try that but that would backfire bigly because no team would waste those kind of draft picks and that cap hit.

So in theory you do that, he could negotiate terms but the other team would have to give up high draft pick compensation. If no one bites Kirk could sign tender meaning you are on hook for that massive cap hit, on top of Alex Smith. It would be a wasted season.

That's not how this works. Alex Smith's contract does not expire at the start of the new league year, Kirk Cousins's does. The Redskins can't trade him because nothing can become official until that day, and at 12:00 AM Cousins becomes a free agent.

They could theoretically franchise tag him, but then they would have to pray some team would be willing to trade multiple first round picks for the right to sign him. If that didn't happen, Cousins would get an ungodly 1 year contract and the Redskins would have to cut a shit ton of players just to get under the salary cap (because I can guarantee if the Redskins tried to do this dumbassery that Cousins would immediately sign a franchise tender knowing it would absolutely fuck Washington over.). A transition tag would be useless because a team would just sign him knowing Washington couldn't match it and they would get nothing.
