Constantine was garbage. We were sitting near where he recovered that fumble vs GB and he runs off the field looking for high 5s, but Clausen was the only one there to greet him.

And how can you not love the name Antwan Applewhite?

Quote :
"Cam Newton will not accept losing

Frustated following last week's loss to Chicago, Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton brushed off tight end Greg Olsen's attempt to encourage him in the Soldier Field locker room.
While Newton conceded he was wrong to react that way, he said Wednesday never he never wants to be a player who accepts losing.

Newton was asked whether he had received advice on how to better handle losing.

“I don't think anybody could, unless it's coming from a world-class loser – 'Let me tell you how to lose,'” Newton said, drawing laughter from the reporters crowded around his locker.
Newton lost one game his final two years of college – against Navarro Junior College in 2009 when Newton led Blinn (Texas) to the national junior college championship. He won all 14 of his starts last season while guiding Auburn to the BCS title.

So he's not accustomed to being 1-3, the Panthers' record heading into this week's game against New Orleans.

“I've been trying to get better as far as not letting it weigh on my emotions that much. But never will ever feel complacent (after) a loss – no matter how good the stats were, no matter how close we were to winning. A loss is a loss,” Newton said.

“We need to keep getting better. But the thing that hurts even more is we're extremely close. We could actually be 4-0, simple and plain. I think that in our heart of hearts," Newton added. "But some teams know how to win. But as soon as we get that mentality that we're not going to lose any more – not only on the offensive side of the ball, (but the) defensive side of the ball, special teams. We have to play as a whole entire unit and play together.”
Newton discussed a couple of other topics during his weekly media availability, including:
The Saints' defense: “Big pressure team. And they try to confuse the offense with so many different looks. This may be the most complex defense we play outside of the Packers. They bring it, simple and plain. They know that they bring it, and we just have to stay one step ahead of them.”

His touchdown celebration: “My little brother likes it, so I'm going to keep doing it. I used to tease him. You know how Superman used to break open his suit and come out. I just have fun with it.”

Whether the game is slowing down for him: “I hope. I just go through each week the same way. You take into the game what you've been working on all week with the coaches, game plan. You try to exploit that. Comprehension is key in this league. You watch film countless hours a day. But if you're not comprehending it and retaining it, it does you no help.”

"The more you look at the statistics, the more you will be convinced: Cam Newton will be an elite quarterback in this league for a long, long time. Consider these statistics, courtesy of ESPN Stats & Information:

Only eight NFL quarterbacks have completion percentages of at least 50 percent on passes that travel farther than 20 yards in the air. The other seven average fewer than seven of such completions each. Newton has 15 for 523 yards. That's 169 more yards than any other quarterback has amassed on similar throws.

Worried about how Newton performs against the blitz because he's a rookie? Only six NFL quarterbacks have attempted 25 or more passes when a defensive back is blitzing: Newton, Eli Manning, Michael Vick, Tony Romo, Sam Bradford and Jay Cutler. Newton owns both the highest completion rate (68 percent) among those quarterbacks in that situation and the highest NFL passer rating (137.5) as well.

When the Panthers are going to run the ball inside their opponent's 10-yard line, they turn to Newton. Newton has had 10 such carries. If you are wondering about how much the Carolina Panthers' running backs are used in those situations, the numbers are surprising. Jonathan Stewart has only two chances, and DeAngelo Williams' next carry inside the opponent's 10-yard line this season will be his first.

The one area where Newton is statistically the weakest, according to his Total QBR (27.7), is out of the shotgun. In 114 passing attempts from the shotgun formation, Newton has just three touchdowns versus four interceptions and five sacks. That's ironic because his 114 attempts from the shotgun are second in the league (Stafford), and those attempts have resulted in 921 of his 1,386 passing yards."

I find it interesting that neither Williams nor Stewart have a rushing touchdown this season. I don't think it means anything other than they aren't busting out long gains, as Newton is running in a lot of the touchdowns. Is it possible for him to set a rookie scoring record at the end of the season with his combination of TD throws and TD runs?

Maybe fantasy wise, since rushing scores are worth more. Peyton threw I think 28 scores his rookie year (and about the same amount of picks), so he might get 30 passing and rushing combined.

I think the reason he's getting all those short TD's is because its a lot easier for him to score than handing it off to a RB 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage. If Cam wasn't a quarterback, he could be an effective NFL running back in the Brandon Jacobs mold. There's no other quarterback in the league you can say that about. Culpepper is the only guy I can think of, but he wasn't the athlete Cam is, and he blew up to 280 at one point.

That surprises me more because he operated from the shotgun almost exclusively at Auburn didnt he? I guess the defenses only have that tape of him from which to prepare so they've had success. If that's the case, then the negative nancy inside me thinks they will accumulate this tape of him in plays where he's having more success and he will come back down to Earth before the end of the season.

all that said

right now he's got 9 total TDs (5 passing, 4 rushing)

he has 5 turnovers, all INTs

i think this is a stat worth tracking and updating every week

right now his TD to turnover ratio is 9:5. being that it is the quarter mark of the season, *PROJECTING* these numbers would put him at 36 touchdowns to 20 turnovers, maybe adding in a few extra turnovers because he's sure to lose a fumble or two at some point.

that would make Manning look like a chump.

Its a cool stat, but beyond a fantasy perspective, it doesn't carry much weight. Say Stewart or Williams run in those scores instead of Cam. Does that make him any less impressive?

it's just fun to think about. i try to separate the fantasy world from objective thoughts on football, yet sometimes they collide. really, if they start winning, i don't give a shit what his numbers look like (within reason).

My favorite QB stat for passing is always yards/attempt. For running, its hard to quantify since he hasn't really broken any long runs yet. But I bet a couple signature 30 or 40 yard scrambles will come soon, maybe even this coming Sunday.

Steve Smith is helping Cam's YPA with his 22.1 yards per catch

i think he leads the league among players who have caught more than 10 passes or so

Yeah, Smith would be getting a lot more press if Welker and Megatron weren't hogging it all for themselves

I'll admit, I didn't think he was done, but I definitely didn't think he was capable of this anymore

Yeah, I've noticed this too in all his post-game interviews and pressers on CarolinaPanthers.com. It's weird to hear that though.....as I've always heard it as "plain and simple." Guess he likes to be different.

Good stuff from Smitty this week, though it's basically verbatim of what he said on The Drive.

Quote :
"Earlier this week, he laughed with reporters while talking about one of his most exuberant celebrations Sunday, after a 53-yard reception that took the ball to the 1-yard line and set up the Panthers' first touchdown.

"I really don't play hoping that people will have good things to say about me, I just play," Smith said. "If I make a catch, I'm excited. Some people might say, 'Why does he do that every time? Can't he just catch the ball and go back to the huddle?' But honestly, I'm 32 years old. I'm five-foot nine and three-quarters. This is an honor and a privilege, and I enjoy it. I'm excited.

"Act like I've been there before? I'm not going to do it. I'm going to show enthusiasm. That's just me. If you don't like it, listen to the radio so you don't have to watch it.""

we came into the game ranked worst in special teams. Living up to the billing!

On a side note Steve Smith is the best Panther in history and it's not close. Peppers is #2 i guess... Lathon #3?
