Quote : | "What is the biggest difference between a Nikon AF-S lens and a regular AF lens?" |
Can't believe nobody answered yet, or you didn't just google this. AF-S lenses have a focus motor in the lens itself, while the AF lens must be driven by the body to autofocus. This is a real big deal if you have something like a D40 that does not have a focus motor in the body of the camera itself, but much less of a point if you have a D80, D200, etc.10/9/2011 8:34:08 AM |

Sigma 20mm f1.8 or Sigma 30mm f1.4
Pros: 20mm can be used on Full Frame; 30mm is slightly faster
I will be using on Canon and Lumix bodies... so 1.6x and 2x crop factor...
or wait for Samyang 24mm f1.4.... (it will fit on both bodies as well and work with full-frame)

A few shots from the Berkshires over the weekend. Unfortunately, heavy winds the day before stripped a lot of trees, and this was my first attempt at photographing from a kayak while I was mostly trying to fish.

I found some new (to me) camera equipment at work yesterday. Found an older Nikon SB-29 macro ring flash and a Micro Nikkor 60mm f2.8 lens for macro work. Pretty excited about trying that out some this weekend.
BTW, do any of ya'll like Ronny ever do any instruction or bring along an extra photographer for shoots? I am not really at the level of book tons of jobs and doing this solo, and I have assisted on a couple of shoots with a guy in Raleigh who shoots the Carolina Ballet, but I was wondering if any of ya'll did something like that? Basically get a second camera/photographer/assistant for free in exchange for some training and exposure to how you shoot and letting them shoot some too. I love volunteering to help out on stuff like that and learning from others and honestly I really would like to learn to shoot like some of ya'll do.
Shit I wish we could have a TWW Photographer get together, where the pros and the n00bs could all get together and shoot something one weekend. Maybe meet at the Rose Garden or a park and take a hike as a group and shoot some stuff. Or get Joie and a couple of others to model together and do some group practice on modeling photography. Would anybody be interested in doing something like that, if you are still in the Triangle?

More misc. I need to be shooting more. I recently bought two 16gb Extreme Pro (90mb/s write speed) CF cards, which were desperately needed since I only had a 4gb card previously. I need to start filling them up.
After a live shot on Salisbury St. the other morning, I had the reporter pose for me before I broke down the last light.

I'm looking to buy a flash for a Canon t2i. I take low-light pictures almost exclusively and have purchased and practiced with a Sigma f1.4 30mm for a while. I would like to start taking pictures of people with diffused but timed flashes without disorienting them.
Money isn't too big of a deal. Right now I'm looking at the 580EXII and would like to order one before friday. What do you guys recommend? 11/8/2011 1:30:59 PM |

^^^I have loved having my 16GB CF card. I mainly got it for airshow purposes, because I HATE getting in the middle of a big performer and having to get out of the zone to switch the fucking card around.
Also I am really excited because I dug around today at work and grabbed a pair of light stands and umbrellas and picked up some umbrella holders at Southeastern Camera. I am using my SB-800 as my main and my SB-600 as my fill, and commander with my on camera flash to run them, but I was reading on Strobist and I realized that the SB-26s that I thought were basically useless can totally run in optical slave mode for my hair and background lights! I can't wait to try this out now and I'm going to the office in the morning to pick them up first thing. I seriously need a bigger battery recharger though!

$invested ~$800 for ~$1,500 worth of equipment. You can pick up some nice stuff off Craigslist, you just have to be diligent. Start out with a mediocre 2 or 3 generation old DSLR and a couple lenses to make sure its your thing.

Hey guys just curious as I have not really gotten out and tried this before. This weekend I am shooting a party at a teen club thing. I have never really shot something like this before, but I know Ronny and Cody I think are both into night shooting. What kinda settings do ya'll use for the dancing action type shots? I would assume slow shutter sync or just bounce flash? Do you generally do rear-curtain sync flash as well? I've got a couple of f/2.8 lenses (17-35mm & 60mm) and an older f/3.5-4.5 35-135mm to use on my D200, but just wanted to know if ya'll have any tips for getting good light and action shots in a club/bar as I have not had the chance to do something like that before. I'm sure I can trial and error it out, but I will be somewhat limited on my time and want to hit the ground running.

Oh yea, sorry forgot to mention pair of 600s and an 800. For the red carpet entrance area I am going to have a pair of them stand mounted firing into my umbrellas using Commander, and then take the 800 on my Stroboframe for the action shots. 12/6/2011 3:40:50 PM |

I have a fujifilm s2000 HD. Decent camera. Works for me. But I wanna get out and take some long exposure pics. Looking through the manual the longest exposure time is 4"(4 seconds?) 12/7/2011 11:36:40 AM |

^Good luck. Put it on a tripod and see what it can do. When I do night shots of buildings and stuff and am doing around f8 I can usually shoot around 3-4 sec, assuming that there is enough light. Sometimes I go quite a bit longer than that though, so you are somewhat limited. Best thing is get it focused, set it on a tripod and put it in delay fired mode so you can minimize vibration from you touching it as much as possible. 12/7/2011 11:58:24 AM |
