^^even with unlocking i don't think that will allow you to use the GSM network without a SIM card slot.

China is CDMA if I'm not mistaken which is what he's getting at since it's one of the few places overseas.

^^that was my point. You could only use it where CDMA was supported. But didn't know it had a dual band chip in it. Nice.

damn. i broke the connection for cable 3 last night while replacing my 3GS screen (for the 3rd time ).

I guess that means I'm stuck using either speakerphone or a bluetooth headset until I get a new phone. I'm eligible for an upgrade next month, but I think I'll just suck it up until this summer so that I can (a) get an iPhone 5, and (b) see whether AT&T or Verizon works better at whatever location I move to this summer.

what's good about that, and why does Apple care?

Using your headphones as a shutter remote seems a little pointless on something like an iPhone camera.

it could be useful at some point... can either use the button on the remote or a voice command...

Apple often hates any app that changes the hardware or hardware usage. Some they let stick around, like Camera Genius, some they pull out of itunes (cant remember the name of it but it was an app that let you use the volume buttons on the side to take pics).

Not sure what they will do with this as technically it isnt the phone hardware being changed.

it's pretty cool for what it is. I'm probably going to spend the cash on the full featured app soon. This is basically a cheaper alternative to a pocketpod or something similar for me.

AT&T threw out a small bone to its customers today...if you have, or switch to, unlimited texts for $20 a month you can now get unlimited mobile to mobile (not just AT&T mobile) for free. But you have to go change your features to get it... and make sure you take off any mobile numbers off of your A-list and use those slots for landlines now

Apple pulls apps that use non-standard APIs. Full Stop. The apps you are referring to used APIs that weren't in the official SDK and that, and only that, is the reason they were pulled. It has nothing to do with using changing the hardware to do something Apple didn't intend for (see the 1,000 apps in the app store that allow you to use the camera flash as a light as examples)

Since I'm pretty sure detecting any loud sound is a feature that is allowed by the standard APIs, I would have to assume that the app you listed would be fine. There's no reason to think that they use any non-standard APIs since everything they do is available in the provided ones.

edited to say: It looks like practically every commenter over at the link you provided has already said this. Seems like the readers over there still know way more than the "writers" do. One of the many reasons I pulled appadvice from my RSS feed months ago. That site is such a joke.

No, its not that cut and dry, Apple does allow non standard APIs in certain cases and sometimes those later become standard down the road, and sometimes they are later pulled. Apple receives requests all the time to make private APIs standard.

"Please do not access undeclared APIs in your applications. This includes undeclared classes, methods, and instance variables. If you have a strong need for a private API and have no workaround, please let us know."

UIGetscreenimage() was allowed and it was not a standard API. I don't know for sure, but the flashlight apps might fall (or did fall) under this same gray area.

And i agree with the detecting a noise bit, but you don't think being able to use the mic button to activate the camera falls under being outside the standard?

just changed that on the att app. thanks. When are they changing the 2gb plan to 4gb? I thought that was soon too.

^^ haha, crazy that you asked for that, the article I am working on is "Best Blood Alcohol Content Gauging Apps"

not exactly what you were looking for, but one of them measures your BAC and has drink recipes (you can lookup stuff like "mixed drink, strong" and it will have a list or you can just search by name), a random drink generator etc. Its called Drunktender.

As for pure drink recipe apps, I use Drinks Free, but I havent really looked around at others in a while so might be better out there but Drinks Free works good enough.

This isn't really accurate, Apple's quoted reason for pulling Camera+ (the app that let you use the volume buttons as a shutter button) was this:

"Your application cannot be added to the App Store because it uses iPhone volume buttons in a non-standard way, potentially resulting in user confusion. Changing the behavior of iPhone external hardware buttons is a violation of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement. Applications must adhere to the iPhone Human Interface Guidelines as outlined in the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement section 3.3.7."

So yeah, they most definitely will boot an app solely for changing the hardware buttons to do something they didn't intend

China's mobile companies (China Mobile, China Unicom) use Sim cards, which would make them GSM.

And apparently, China Telecom is CDMA, but they're the 3rd largest network (out of 3) in China. It would be quite the hassle to change your phone over to China Telecom, even if you unlock it, mainly since they don't use the subscriber model that we use in the US. It would be easier to buy a cheap phone for 50-75 dollars and putting $15 of talking time on it.

Hey has anyone jailbroke using Greenpoison on 4.2.1 and unlocked using Ultrasn0w 1.2 on BB 01.59.00? I'm running into some issues with MMS.

-I am either the only one who's done this or people just aren't talking about it online but there seems to be a bug with the latest unlock and OS version that when you restart your phone the SIM doesn't seem to get the correct APN settings and won't let you send MMS but when you reset network settings it seems to fix the issue (but if you restart normally again MMS won't work again).

I'm just going to uninstall Ultrasn0w until I need to switch sim cards.

The case I have. It's the thinnest out there, and has been pretty good so far, because I've been lucky.

No guarding the front.

I have a friend who has a friend near me who does repairs as a side business, but I'm so worried about giving it to someone else, and there is NO WAY I would try and repair it myself.

The nearest Apple Store is about an hour away, and my schedule won't permit me to let them look at it until next weekend.

I'm sure there will be a gsm (possibly hspa+) version but one that works on Verizon by this summer is still pretty much in the air. The Verizon iPhone 4 has the "world phone" chip so it's possible a dual mode cdma/gsm version could come but it's still just speculation at this point.

our contract w/ at&t is up on june 26 & we intend to move to verizon. i'm hoping the 5 will be out by then. if not we might just stick it out for a few weeks until it does, as long as it's not like september or something. this is an office account with 7 iphones on at&t right now. we have 1 guy on verizon w/ a bb because he can't get signal out where our projects are.

if you use the conference call feature a lot for work (like I do) you might not want to switch over to Verizon. Their iPhone 4 has several limitations when it comes to conference calling. Obviously it wont affect your personal use much but if you use it for work a lot...

we've already had this discussion. no we don't use it for that.

coverage >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> conference calls in our case. we have projects in the middle of nowhere that have no at&t signal. not just a bar or 2, but none whatsoever. it says "no service". that's verified by looking on at&t's maps too. verizon out this way is the shit though.

I sold my on CL for about $120-150 about 2 months ago. Sold it to a guy who has it own company that temporarily provides iPhones for companies on projects (I guess when they all need to have a app capable device for a particular app), so he was happy to pay that much for it as he can "rent" it out numerous times and more than make up for it

^classic Steve Jobs, if true.

1. Make a crack about competitors' large phones during last year's iPhone Q&A
2. Release large phone
3. MEGA-Profit

that said, I'd be all over it.

If the rumor about removing the home button is true, they could increase the screen size without increasing the phone's footprint.

if they make the screen bigger i'd rather not have a larger device overall either. i'm not interested in carrying around a jumbotron like the droid x (guy at work just got one). if i had to choose i think i'd pick nano.

starting July 1st, apps with subscription based content have to offer them as IAPs, so that Apple can get their cut. Apple has stated that they just want the option of people being able to subscribe in the app (at the same cost or lower) but people can also still subscribe outside the app like they have been.

Basically, it will be easier to subscribe within the app, and cost the same to the user, so more people will probably do that and thus Apple will get a cut which is pissing off companies such as Netflix, Hulu etc.

I think Netflix will be ok because so many of their subscribers carried over from the mailing subscription but some of the other companies may pull out.
