I don't see how the subscription thing really applies to Netflix. They don't have to offer the option to subscribe from within the app, so where's the issue?

yeah, rhapsody is pissed.

In case you weren't aware, Apple's newly launched App Store subscriptions aren't sitting so well with everybody. While the functionality could of course be a boon to services that have struggled getting paying customers, folks who have already been doing just fine, thank you very much, are balking at the new restrictions Apple has imposed. Rhapsody has issued a statement, which says that it's not going to play ball and even levels a bit of a threat: "We will be collaborating with our market peers in determining an appropriate legal and business response to this latest development." The big trouble stems from the fact that Apple requires anybody offering a subscription service to offer that service for the same price or less through Apple. That means you can still sign up folks through your own methods and get all the cash, but if anybody signs up through your app, Apple gets a 30 percent cut. In addition, Apple is no longer allowing applications to include a link to an external site for purchasing, which means vendors will have trouble getting new users to pay them directly instead of using Apple's simple but heavily-taxed option. Rhapsody claims that it can't offer its services at existing prices with Apple grabbing that much of the revenue, and it sounds like Rhapsody will be leaving the App Store soon if an agreement isn't struck."

That sounds perfectly reasonable to me. If you bring in the customer, you get the money, if Apple helps you bring in customers, they get a commission. I don't see what the big deal is.

The big deal is that you are forced to offer it as an option in-app, so you can't opt out even if the future of your service depends on it.

i'm sure if Microsoft charged a fee for every application installed on Windows that'd be cool too

^^Then they are free to go develop their own phone/OS/distribution platform and keep 100% of the money themselves.

You're acting like Apple giving exposure to their 120 million+ customers isn't added value at all. I don't see how taking a cut of a subscription that they helped sell is any different from taking a cut of a $.99 app that a developer makes. The difference is that, yeah, you're not allowed to advertise it, but you can still go after new customers in the same way you did before and collect 100% of the money, just like you did before. All the old customers are still 100%ers too.

^Apples and oranges. Open platforms vs closed etc. If everybody knew that the only way to get software to a Windows PC was to sign up for a MSN account and only install MS approved apps, they wouldn't have a right to complain if that was the environment they signed up for. There are plenty of other options out there. That holds true for phones as well.

to me it would be like if BellSouth asked for a share of all business that resulted from the use of their land line phone system.

Its not the environment that was signed up for. Also, you're ignoring the fact that companies are not allowed to undercut the app-store price. Thats like Amazon taking a 30% cut of everything, but prices on amazon can't be raised to offset that fee without raising prices everywhere else the product is sold.

Because the app is dependent on the ecosystem whereas the subscription isn't.

Say tomorrow start my iPhone up and start a Netflix/Rhapsody subscription. In six months when I upgrade I decide to switch to an Android device. What business does Apple still have claiming 30% of the price of the subscription?

^^ I'm not ignoring it, I'm saying it's justified. You think Amazon doesn't take a cut of items they sell?

^I haven't read up on the specifics, but all other in app purchases take your payment through iTunes. If you sign up through the app, I wouldn't think that subscription would be valid if you took it to another device. Just like if I bought extra levels for angry birds on the iPhone, I wouldn't expect those levels to be there on my Android phone if I ever decided to "upgrade" (lolz)

Hell, that seems like the perfect workaround for companies like Netflix or rhapsody. Go ahead and sell a subscription through the app that ONLY works in the app. Then sell a normal subscription through your website that works on all devices (xbox, desktop, other phones etc).

I do agree Apple shouldn't keep getting your money if you change devices. If that's how it works, that is fucked up.

Except all the wording about the policy seems to be that if you offer a subscription service you have to offer the same subscription service through the App Store.

I wonder if something as simple as a discount code could be used. Offer a spot to put in a discount code on the web sign-up. You're technically charging the same price in both places but a coupon can be used. That's assuming that you can't use coupons with iTunes/App Store which I've never seen a place to enter one.

Update to cracked screen.

Went to the Apple Store in Providence Place mall and the dude at the store said that, because the screen isn't totally smashed (two hairline cracks by home button), they can cover it under the Limited Warranty and it will cost $0.00.

Comes with front and rear screen protector

I drop my phone almost every day. I have gotten lucky every time except this last time. I'm not taking any chances.

And I didn't buy the phone because I wanted it to "look good" in the case. It works well, and I want it to continue working after I drop it.

^^i have the neo hybrid ex. the flimsiness of the plastic part is pretty disappointing. mine already broke at the bottom by the dock connection. looks really nice (especially with the woodgrain back protector i have on mine) and is very streamlined and doesn't get in the way, but I don't think it's worth the $30. Maybe $15.

i just bought a kensington dockingstation and my phone will not fit in it with the otterbox on it. While i'm not going to sacrifice protection for looking cool in a dock, its just a gripe.

Is there any case that's compatible with any dock? I just assumed that putting on a case meant you couldn't use the phone in a dock without removing it, which is why most days, I don't even bother putting a case on at all. The bumpers are easy enough to slide on and off, but I still bet I put one on less that 50% of the time.

^Really? Most docks fit most cases. Going to best buy I can walk down the isle and my iphone 4 will fit in probably 90% of the docks with a case.

^^^^ Thanks I was thinking about getting one. Might just order the screen protector and keep the speck case.

I also ordered a defaultcase.com Its taken them 2 weeks to ship but they're $0.01 with $3.99 shipping so I figured I would try one

^^i also have a couple of the default cases. Can't beat them for the price. The only thing I don't like is the amount of dust that builds up on the back through the little holes. That's just a minor annoyance though. For $5, they're pretty nice.

got my one cent default case yesterday and I'm not very impressed. it doesn't seem to stay in place perfectly and there are quite a few bare spots that dont get any protection and I dont think it would do much to help if I dropped it. Gonna stick with the speck case for now

i've got an incipio feather that I believe was designed for this purpose. It doesn't offer a lot of protection though, mostly just scratch resistance.

I hate cases, especially mil-spec cases because of how bulky they usually are but this one is kind of catching my eye because it's totally water, dust, everything proof and yet minimalistic at the same time:

http://www.theiphoneguru.net/?p=11327

It only adds 1/16" to the thickness of the phone

i got my default case for my 3gs today & i'm not super impressed with the fit either...but i guess it was appropriate for the price. it doesn't slide around or anything. the little piece that runs between the silent switch & volume buttons kinda gaps a little bit. it does leave a lot more unprotected than my incipio feather case. i'm going to use it for a while & i like the silver color (wish it was a little more gray though).

i love my ifrogz case, but it's started to break apart. what i liked the most was the felt backing on the inside that protected the mirrored back of the phone. The case was rather expensive, but it definitely saved my phone from numerous drops. Might get another one or move on to something else.

I know I should sift through the endless pages ITT for the answer to the following question, but I'm going to be lazy and risk the ensuing flaming.

I got an iPhone 3GS for a co-worker in India and so it needs to be jailbroken in order to unlock it for use on their network(s).

What's the best jailbreak tool? The one I'm leaning towards is Greenpois0n, but welcome any suggestions or advice.

One thing I'm uncertain of is what firmware version is on this phone. It's a refurbished one that is completely wiped/reset. Is there a way to check the revision w/o plugging the phone into itunes and going through that rigamorole?

Thanks!
