^yeah, I know how to do it normally, but this phone was just giving me the "connect to iTunes" screen upon booting. I couldn't access the normal menus or apps. It wasn't "activated" yet.
I just used an at&t sim card and activated it, then jailbroke with greenpois0n, then unlocked it with ultrasn0w. It looks like everything worked! Unless I can find somebody with a t-mobile sim to test it with, i guess it'll have to wait till he gets back to India. I can't believe how easy everything was to install. 2/28/2011 3:12:09 PM |

I'm new to jailbreaking and Cydia, so can anyone recommend the best free Cydia apps?
My major focus was wifi hotspot/tethering capability, which I think I got with PdaNet free thanks to a Google search. Anyone used this and know of any problems or shortcomings, or recommend a better wifi hotspot app? 3/7/2011 9:07:04 AM |

Anybody tried out this program called TouchRetouch? If you remember that Photoshop video from a while back that showed that feature that just allowed you to lasso just about anything and hit the delete key, that's basically what this program does. I tried it out on a couple of pictures and it works pretty good. Here's one I did from a picture I took this afternoon. It's a crappy picture to start with, so it's probably not the best example, but I was really impressed with the results.

Removed the refs and a Miami player:
Not surprisingly it just turned the group of players in the middle into a jumbled up mess when I tried to delete them, but it did alright with the isolated people, I think. Not bad for a quick and dirty edit on your mobile device. ] 3/10/2011 9:00:17 PM |

Who uses the stock alarm clock anyway? 3/15/2011 5:25:28 PM |

^I use my phone's alarm every morning, although I don't have an iPhone. My wife uses her iPhone as an alarm too. She travels all the time, so it's much more convenient to have something you can "trust" to wake you up in the morning. That said, it's strange they've had common sense use-case issues with their clock. But at least it's easy to predict for when the iPhone's clock will fail:
if datetime.event == CONFUSING { activate_old_school_backup_clock() }else{ // use iPhone clock } 3/15/2011 7:07:58 PM |

I use my phone's alarm as a backup to my normal alarm (or when traveling). Late Sunday night, she looked at me like I was crazy when testing my Samsung Focus to make sure the alarm would work later that morning at 4am, but I'm paranoid after coming from an iPhone.
Needless to say, I felt pretty vindicated by the same news story breaking as usual.

http://www.bgr.com/2011/03/18/att-cracks-down-on-tethering-cheaters/
Quote : | "AT&T has started to issue warnings to customers unofficially tethering their smartphones to its network. In an email to unauthorized tetherers, the company writes, “Our records show that you use this capability, but are not subscribed to our tethering plan.” The correspondence goes on to note that users will be automatically enrolled in the $45 per month “DataPro for Smartphone Tethering” plan if they ignore the warning. “The new plan – whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you – will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan,” the email continues. The standard DataPro offering is $25 per month and provides users with 2GB of monthly data, although some users are still clinging to a discontinued, $30 per month 5GB data plan. It is safe to assume that a large portion of the unofficial, tethering populous is jailbroken iPhone users and rooted Android users. “If you discontinue tethering, no changes to your current plan will be required.”" |

How can they enroll you in something automatically without your consent? While i might see this flying in some states, i highly doubt this will fly in others. Expect a lawsuit on this one. 3/18/2011 9:17:00 AM |

^That's what I'd like to know.
What do you mean this will have no effect? You think they're just making empty threats?
After doing a little reading, it seems as if they are simply targeting high data users.

Pretty sure if you are connecting from your firefox browser on your laptop, then the web request going out to their network includes this in the HTTP information headers....
Not rocket science here. 3/18/2011 5:25:21 PM |

I never knew that information about what particular browser & crap was sent out like that. My degree is in animal science. I've never taken any sort of networking class.

Not to mention that you're not always going to go over web ports when using software on a computer. Kind of like how when I had my iPhone I could tether and use GChat within Gmail, but not in the standalone application. 3/18/2011 6:00:22 PM |

If they're just going by user-agent that's easy enough to change.
I wonder if they're using some other means to determine this? 3/18/2011 7:11:50 PM |
FanatiK All American 4248 Posts user info edit post |
there is a VERY long thread about this on modmyi and the conclusion, as I stated above, is that they are simply targeting high data users. Some who don't tether got the notice. Some who tether but don't use much data didn't.
They're not analyzing traffic or anything like that. 3/19/2011 9:02:19 AM |
