The difference between a good photographer and a fauxtographer is that the good photographer can take an award-winning photo with a Canon AE-1. 4/18/2012 1:49:10 PM |

Probably do some late afternoon stuff. My thought was get up there and meet everybody and do a little hike first (I have never been on the trails there so I don't know if there is anything worthwhile to shoot) and then we could shoot some evening shots with the sun setting across the lake. Maybe get some of the boaters, bikers, or a person/couple that could model for us near the shore. That would give us the most variability of light and different angles to try.
As for the powered strobes, it looks like they would be compatible with a pure sine wave inverter, but it would need to be at least a couple hundred watts per light. Hence the dilemma. So far I have never used them outdoors, simply indoors as a portable studio setup. 4/18/2012 2:04:10 PM |

i really wish i could come and school wasnt so in the way (amongst other things )
ive been working primarily with film lately but im still hanging on to digital because....well why not! cody and i have done a few weddings this year and im actually got quite a few model shoots ( im not the model i mean ) lined up for the summer
(contrary to popular belief i know my way around a camera pretty well ...its actually quite nice from the model standpoint....i ask every single photographer for their secrets lololol )
i develop my own black and white at home and plan to start color this summer. i have a lot, i mean a lot, of film cameras. most were given to me or flea market finds. ive been hoovering around my polaroid land camera like a madwoman lately and i just had a friend send me chrome film for cross processing
i totally want to come to one of these things should it happen again <3 <3 <3 <3
its become an awesome hobby.

Group Shoot May 19th at Lake Crabtree. We'll plan on getting there an hour or two before sunset. I say meet in the big green field at the first parking lot (gravel lot).
Bring whatever gear you got. Volunteers/models for portait shoots are still needed, otherwise I think photographers can take pictures of photographers.
Post if you can make it.
And if not I don't see any reason we can't make this a regular thing.

I think we said the same thing but in different ways. A good photographer can compose and expose a photograph without using the automatic mode on a $5000 digital.4/19/2012 4:38:44 PM |

I don't know. I think a good photograph is more than just knowing how to use manual. It's subject content. You can have perfect lighting and perfect focus and still have a subpar photo. Some people can put it on green square and take something that's moving and real.

It just depends on what style you are going for. Most people if they were doing wedding shots and you handed them a bunch of Polaroid looking old shots for the wedding album would probably strangle you. Depending on the couple they may enjoy some of that, but if I am doing work shots around the Med School, I would get fired if I turned in anatomy shots, architectural shots, etc to be used in a teaching environment that looked like it was shot with a Brownie.
Now for a modelling session or going for a certain style in a shoot, it can be really cool. IMO being a photographer means being able to get good shots with what you have. Better equipment can give you more options and different ways to get "the shot" but I know guys (doctors, professors & lawyers) who tote around $15-50k in bodies and glass and barely know how to shoot a damn thing. Also some people have the technical aspect down, but may not have the eye for great composition. They have all these bodies and gear and get boring shots. No eye for the art of it. Some people just can find that while others have to learn how to do it. But regardless of the style of your shooting, I wouldn't get upset about it God. I personally like the style that Joie/Cody do in their shots as it is appropriate then, but it would not be appropriate in all circumstances. I think programs like Instagram have made it like hipsterific now where everybody is doing it, so you are no longer differentiating yourself from everybody else by that style. Hence why I personally don't really use it. But to each their own. I would never say they weren't making art, I would just love to shoot some of those same shots with a nice body and glass and see how it compares to the way they like to process and edit it. 4/19/2012 9:54:43 PM |

Youre right too nighthawk!
Unfortunately (fortunately?) Cody and I don't have a style, we're all over the place because I'm an experimenter :p I can post some of the wedding digitals we have gotten. Very classic I think... And to add to your first line we were hired because they wanted..... Polaroids and film lol.
For the record...Cody and I do NOT consider ourselves photographers. At all. If we called ourselves that it would be a disservice to the real ones (aka Ronny <3). We just are lucky to have some decent equipment Awesome fraaaands, and happen to really like taking pictures of people

Why would you not be photographers? I've seen some of Cody's shots and he does good stuff. He may not be a full-time professional photographer, but he's certainly not a "faux"tographer either. The distinctions get a little harder to get straight when you are distinguishing between novice/amateur/semi-pro/pro etc. but I don't think anybody would say what ya'll have posted isn't photography.
Again, the only thing I resent is people putting themselves out as professionals that have no business calling themselves that. They slap up a FB biz page and a watermark on some blurry or out of focus shots and think they know it all, though they still are shooting in auto mode with the pop up flash. THAT is the only thing I hate in photography. Other than that I love anybody else who is into it and wants to learn or can teach me something. I had a great time when I started out and found a photo club of other people who were passionate about photography and I would like to have a group that could do that up here.
BTW I might want to talk to some of ya'll about film photography too. I have some great old film cameras that my dad and grandfather shot with, but I usually don't grab those cameras because of the cost to process and develop film.

Update. I contacted the park to see about closing time. They said they are currently closing around 8:30, so we would need to be heading out then. The almanac says sunset is about 8:17 I think, so we would not have much free time to get our stuff together and leave, but at least knowing a set time instead of just the vague "sunset" will allow us to gauge when we need to get out of the park. The park supervisor and manager were going to get back to me too, so I will see if they say anything different. 4/20/2012 10:06:36 AM |

Here is a good example where a photographer uses Photoshop to obtain photos that probably would not have happened without software (IBT "real photographers really duct tape their kids to the wall and set candles on fire on top of their head and used these really thin nylon lines to make objects appear to float in space and then shoot them with the glass slides in one take RAWR RAWR)

^ Yeah but the big difference between what he does and what you were suggesting is he took a good idea, applied it to good photography and came out with some really great images.
What you wanted to do was to ignore the good advice you got, not reshoot and correct your mistakes, and instead Photoshop poor quality images beyond recognition back into decency.
Every news/editorial publications & every photo contest I've entered would not permit photos that have been altered that much.
