hi ya'll
i wanted to add to the nikon vs. canon debate.
ive asked almost every single photographer why they chose the brand they chose.
and from what i can gather by the agglomeration of their opinions (i LOVE picking the brains that have made a brand switch) is that nikons are superior in lower light and indoor settings but canons tend to be ever so slightly better in most other areas. but in the end it's not any huge difference.
ive kinda sorta wanted to switch to nikon for a while, and maybe i will in the future, money permitting we just have far too many lenses and im not convinced enough to justify it at the moment 4/21/2012 10:51:43 AM |

I want to sell all of my gear and buy a medium format SLR. 4/21/2012 5:28:08 PM |

One thing that Ken Rockwell did not mention (possibly because article may be a little dated) is that Canon has been kicking ass in the video field for the last few years, pretty much single handedly starting the whole HDSLR movement and spawning a massive supply of affordable cinema gear. Nikon is just now starting to catch up. If you are buying a camera made by one of those two within the last three years, that may be an important consideration to some.
^I thought a good photographer can make an award-winning photo with an AE-1? Holler if you are interested, I got one I can sell you. It even comes with an old speedlight and a power winder. I found it to not be compatible with my Photoshops

If you make it out to one of the get together's then I would not mind if you shot with one of my 3 Nikon bodies to see how it compares. 4/21/2012 7:10:46 PM |

I shot with a Nikon comparable to my 60D (it was a D5100 with a f/1.8 DX lens i believe), and I thought it had a better AF, a more intuitive menu, and a much sweeter shutter sound (FWIW than the Canon. They are fine cameras and for photography both brands are very much competitive like Ken Rockwell pointed out. I just noticed that there was nothing said about video at all in the article (probably written prior to 5DMKII times) 4/21/2012 7:28:20 PM |

He can. But if Mario Andretti can spank you in a Ford Fiesta, just imagine what he can do in an Indycar? (I'm not comparing myself to him, but just extending your analogy).
I really am drawn to medium format due to the increased photo resolution it provides, and it's much more of a purist format than digital due to it's lack of accessibility.
Here is my favorite photo I've shot so far on medium format, but it was on a $5 toy camera. I'd love to see what I can do with a $500 Hasselblad.

All of you people that thought my picture was overprocessed and crowded...
I guess it was too underprocessed and undercrowded in order to beat this 1st place winner in People category!
Apparently I should have fake-HDR'd that shit by pulling three different exposures from my raw file and get a few more aimlessly wandering people into my picture.
Plz to re-evaluate your picture judging abilities.
Not saying you guys were not right about the pitfalls of my photo, it was a tough shot to expose and you were right to say that I winged that shit at the best. It's just sad that the winner took the worst parts about my shot and took them even further and IMHO his composition is inferior. It was all about the composition to me and the capture of that one moment when the sun and the friends and the couple and the puppy fell into the right place.
