" How so? From what little bit I've used it, I like it. SMS "hangouts" are tagged as such, the rest are proper Google hangouts with the option to video chat etc. The SMS convos don't sync to the cloud though, so for that reason I don't personally see any value added. I'll probably be going back to GoSMS

Not for me...The keyboard on my 4.2.2 GNex is pretty much the same on my 4.4 N5. The ./!/?/etc is all in one button. next to the space bar, with a period as the default, and the pop up selection window has the same layout too."

it should be threaded SMS/hangouts. I don't want to see two conversations with one person. I just remember the main reason... Same notification icon for an SMS/hangout despite being separate threads. If it was seemless I'd be OK with this. But typically my primary contacts are on hangouts, SMS is from everyone else and I typically dictate how quick I check the notification based on that

And my comment about the comma, I alsways have typed the comma using the ?123 button, and it had previously been where the microphone is. It is now a _. On my tablet (10"), the period key is now a ?.

yeah now that I got my voice input icon, my comma went away and is now on a press and hold from my period. I'd rather have the comma on my main screen since I don't need a period with the double-tap spacebar action.

I rarely (never) voice type, maybe my solution is to disable the microphone. Its just ingrained for me to hit the alt/comma/space, in quick succession.

Another issue with the keyboard that I've had, and my girlfriend too, is if I type contractions. If I start a sentence with a contraction, everything is fine. However, if it type "I didnt eat" didn't will autocorrect to "I DIDNT eat" instead of "I didn't eat".... Why the fuck the all caps, I have no idea. Its not in my user defined dictionary, and only happens mid sentence.

Edit: I just tried it again, and it is not happening. Maybe Google pushes autocorrect functionality in the background?

I installed Cyanogenmod 10.1 on my Galaxy S4 recently. I am having issues with dialing extensions. Whenever I have to dial numbers followed by an extension the second aprty cannot identify my touch tone inputs. I tried goggling this issue, other people seem to have the same issue but they fix it by setting their DTMF to long. I do not have that option anywhere in my phone. Has anyone else on here had similar issues? The only workaround right now is to create a contact with the appropriate dialing pauses. It is annoying!

Any of you guys using NFC tags for anything? I have watched a few videos on them and they seem quite interesting. I might order a few a see if I can find some practical use with them.

^^Yeah the first thing i thought to tell you was to add commas to your dial string. :/

^For a while I had NFC on my light switches at home and work and one in the car.

Car: Disable WiFi, Turn GPS on/Start whatever that android app was to track routes.
Office: Enable WiFi, Disable GPS, Quit Spotify if running
Home: Enable WiFI, Disable GPS.

not much but it got the job done. Now I don't really use them anymore. Tasker is your friend though.

anyone using the Nexus 5 launcher on a different device? The google search keeps crashing on me. It looks like it starts crashing when you search for something then go to the multitasking list and close it out.

Google has stated that the Google Experience launcher is a nexus 5 exclusive for the time being. So, yes, the crashing is a common issue

I often get a SMS/hangout message, go to reply and the keyboard won't work.

I back out of/close the Hangout app, open Hangouts, open up the text thread, and the keyboard app works fine again.

Any idea why that would happen on a new N5 with the stock OS, keyboard etc?

And done. Well, still lots of device compatibility to add, but they're knocking it out of the park.

Pretty stellar battery life on my N5 thus far. Unplugged from the charger at 8am, and now 13 hours later I still have 36% left...and I used my phone pretty heavily today including navigation, gaming, voice calls, texting and random internet usage.

Side loaded the update to my nexus 10. You'd never really know anything was different. Outside of shedding the blue, for gray, no other ui characteristics were carried over. That's a bit disappointing.

The launcher default menu is nice.

The settings ui is stupid. It changed from being two panes, tablet optimized, to being similar to a phone. There's a ton of wasted space.

4.4 is androids vista. Looks nice, but only a few devices run that well. Oh and they fucked up a ton of shit that wasn't broken.

Someone asked about a case, I got the Cruzerlite bugdroid in blue and it's great.

As for battery life on the Nexus 5, it was fully charged at night and then at 10% by about 6 in the morning. I've turned off some of the auto syncing options to see if that helps. I also had Wifi on but it wasn't a battery hog.

The major culprits were Android OS and Phone (about 30% of the battery drain) each. Any other ideas?

not sure - I've had pretty good battery life. WiFi on anytime I am at home, leaving all the auto-syncing on by default except turning facebook off since it uses a ton when you let it do its own thing. GPS off unless I need it. I've been taking it off the charger around 6:30am and when I am in bed sometime between 10pm and 11pm it's been anywhere between 30% and 55% this week so far. I don't really know what would be draining it that much?

^^Weird. I can keep my phone on for a week in airplane mode and only drain maybe 1% a day. Betterbatterystats is a good free program. Install it, recharge your phone, let it sit for a while then do the 'Other' and 'partial wakelock' option. It will list what's waking your phone up from sleep. For me the culprit is usually Google play services (NlpCollectorWakeLock). Wifi also drains my battery faster than just keeping it on LTE (I have a Note II though).

Anyone with a Moto X - what are your opinions of the phone now that it is a couple months after release? I am thinking about getting that or the nexus 5 for Christmas. The Moto X is still getting good reviews most places and it seems life most blogs still prefer it to the 5.

I love my moto x. Typically get 4 hours of screen time per charge, exclusively using LTE (no WiFi). That makes for about 24 hours from charge to charge

I used to be a ROM flasher, but they did it right. I have no desire to flash my phone. However, there are times I wish I had root.

The camera is interesting. Its a bit clunky coming from the standard aosp camera, but once you figure it out its pretty solid. Motorola are also committed to developing and improving it, the 4.4 leak has a camera that addresses my main concerns with the camera, primarily focusing it.

Also, the active notifications are preferential to the notification led. Additionally, it has the ability to remain unlocked when paired with a trusted Bluetooth device. So when I'm in my car, my car pairs, and I don't have to unlock my phone every time I turn it on. It's nice having that step removed.

wow, 4 hours of screen on time is great. i am getting like 1.5 hrs with my N4. that battery life has me leaning towards the moto x cause i will be using my phone for work soon. but i'm going to have to get the dev edition so it will work on straight talk. $550 vs $350 is tough to beat.

I'm coming from a galaxy nexus. So battery life on this device is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Lol.

If you like quick updates, nexus is obviously faster... But Verizon did send notifications for a soak test, so 4.4 may be happening by months end, which is impressive.

That's just since last charge though...and just because the screen is on doesn't mean we're interacting with it right?

With all this talk of smartphone addiction, I figured there must be some app which measures how long you're on your device daily...

Idunno, I think screen on time is a pretty good indicator? Maybe if you let your phone sit for the timeout period and turn its screen off, it would be inflated.

For me, if my phone screen is on, I'm interacting in some way. Looking at notifications, reading, etc. I typically turn the screen off when i'm done.

I'm not sure how else you'd interact with the screen off? Except maybe while on calls, but you could easily estimate call times from the dialer.

This wouldn't quantify it though. It won't say "you have touched your phone 60 times today."

The battery life on the Nexys 5 has settled down and it isn't discharging through the night anymore. I think a big culprit was syncing Google stuff - photos, drive and the like. I set it to sync on wifi + charge and it's quite good now.

The earpiece speaker on voice calls is terrible though in the last week. I can barely hear a thing. The speaker is fine otherwise.

Quote :
"As you all know, Android 4.4 introduced Host Card Emulation (HCE) that allows Android and developers to build in NFC tap-to-pay services without needing a provisioned secure element. If you have followed along in the blocking of Google Wallet by carriers, you’ll be very familiar with secure elements. I don’t want to call this move a big “F U” to carriers, but it certainly feels like it is in a way. Basically, once your phone is updated to Kit Kat, you’ll be able to use Google Wallet like you should have been able to from the beginning. You can find more info on HCE and Kit Kat here.

So how can you get tap and pay up and working on your Verizon Moto X since it was just updated to Kit Kat this morning? By installing the Google Wallet .apk from the Nexus 5, of course. "

Yep, already got that. As a note, you still have to side load wallet. The play store does not have the HCE version yet, and if it did, I'm sure Verizon would try to block it.

That story has been floating around for over a year I think. Its older than old.

But that case is being re-tried on the damages award. Basically the infringement has stood but the damages will be re-evaluated by a jury. I think they're in jury selection now.

These are the full settings I ended up with (MCC and MNC may be different if you are using T Mobile vs ATT?):

Name: STRAIGHT_TALK
APN: tfdata
Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: not set
Password: not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: not set
APN type: not set
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
APN enabled: enabled
Bearer: unspecified
MVNO type: none
MVNOI value: not set

I will note that even this was not working until I contacted Straight Talk online @ https://www.straighttalkwirelessforum.com/

Once an agent contacted me via PM and we opened a typical online customer support chat, they fixed something on their end within a matter of minutes and I was in business.

That's not the case for me. I'm not interacting with it when I'm using Nav, waiting on something to load, and I often don't turn the screen off when I set it down. Not to mention like I said screen on time is only tracked since the last full charge as best I can tell.

If I didn't sneak in on an unlimited upgrade, I'd be all over that. For those that like unlocking their phones.... The dev edition is also on discount. Also, motorola announced that unlocking your device no longer voids warranty, with respect to displays crapping out, batteries failing, etc. (I suspect they may even warranty bricked phones, but they haven't explicitly stated as much)
