I'm amazed at how often they give out new phone. They almost never do hardware repairs on phones and software issues they can't figure out they'll give out new phones. 5/11/2011 12:20:25 PM |

I took my iPhone 4 in because of a crack in the back glass. They gave me the "normally this costs $30, but we'll fix it for free today, blah blah". So they replaced the back glass in about 5-10 minutes. Overall, I was very happy they would do that, a lot of companies would say you're SOL. 5/11/2011 2:06:42 PM |

It's fairly quick to. I noticed they have a stack of refurbed/new? phones in these black cases with numbers on them. They also have this plastic protector on it.5/11/2011 9:41:53 PM |

wait, if you drop and break your phone within the first year, they'll fix it or give you a new/refurb one? I didn't think the warranty would cover that kind of stuff. 5/11/2011 10:58:43 PM |

^^Can't hurt to try. They have always been very helpful when I've gone in. Like I said, they replaced the cracked back glass for free (had the phone about 10 months). My wife left hers on the back of a car after pumping gas and it was runover and smashed up. We took it in (I thought the dorks were going to cry when they saw it) and they replaced it for $100, saying they could probably still salvage some parts out of it. It seems like every time there is an issue they always say they'll do it "just this one time" like somehow that time is special.
On another note, I think they messed up when they replaced my back glass. The camera no longer works properly, it's like they left a clear plastic sheet on the inside of the glass. If I use the flash at all it floods the camera lens so it just comes up as a big blur. I guess I'll have to make another appointment... 5/12/2011 4:02:25 AM |

I keep getting the same error. If you do go try to swap it out, will you post up as to how it goes? If it's a big hassle, I won't bother, but if they're accommodating, I'll probably follow suit. Thanks!5/12/2011 8:16:43 AM |

Went back in today. When they replaced my back glass they did leave a plastic wrapper on the inside of the phone. They were very apologetic and it only took 10 mins to get helped and out the door, even without an appointment. 5/13/2011 5:54:00 PM |

I know you weren't talking to me, but when I took mine in the genius pressed the button 20 times in a row and all 20 times it worked perfectly. Then I said "well just try to pull up the multitasking menu by double clicking. That only works about one out of every 20 times I try it" He tried it 3 times and it worked perfectly all three times. I swear it hasn't worked that well in the last 2 months or more. Then he said "you try it" as if it was user error and he wanted to see if I was just pressing the button wrong. I tried the double click and it didn't work. And again. on the 3rd-4th try it eventually came up. Then I tried a 5-6 single clicks and only 1 worked. Then he pulled out his phone and got me to try it on his (again to prove that I could hit a button properly, I guess) and it worked exactly like it should. Then he said something about running diagnostics on mine and maybe reloading the OS and I told him I had reloaded the OS at least 4-5 times since the problem started including installing a clean restore to 4.3.3 last night and the problem still occurred. He said "oh...well that helps matters a lot" then about 10 seconds later he was pulling out a new phone for me.
So even though he really wasn't able to replicate the issue himself, it really seems like he didn't care that much and was pretty quick to give me new hardware as soon as he saw that I wasn't completely retarded. In the time I was there I saw the girl to my left get her iPhone4 replaced because she said it kept dropping signal at her house (unreplicatable in the store) and the couple to my right get a new iPad2 because it had a crack on the bezel. Seems like the geniuses don't really do a lot of troubleshooting as much as replacing.]5/13/2011 8:38:02 PM |

^A lot of the rumors have said this hardware generation is going to be a relatively mild refresh, so like the 3Gs being a spec bump of the 3G, a spec bump of the 4 will be the "4s." The iPad 2 was a pretty mild refresh, but still got a new number, so I doubt the new iPhone will be the 4s.
Either way, if I were to make an uninformed guess of what to expect:
A5 processor 8 MP camera/1080p video 4" screen
Since LTE is still somewhat in its infancy in the US and the spectrum hasn't even been sold in the UK, I'd be surprised to see it on the iPhone 5. Since the iPad 2 has 512 MB of RAM, I doubt the iPhone will see a bump there either.
I think iOS 5 will be the big news this generation. 5/14/2011 10:13:17 PM |

No wonder apple fanactics get so upset when people shit on their religion

For Apple fans, the brand triggers a reaction in the brain that's not unlike that of religious devotees, according to a BBC documentary series that cites neurological research.
The neuroscientists ran a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test on an Apple fanatic and discovered that images of the technology company's gadgets lit up the same parts of the brain as images of a deity do for religious people, the report says.
The first episode of the documentary shows Apple employees "whipped up into some sort of crazy, evangelical frenzy" at the recent opening of an Apple store in London. Observers and Apple critics have long accused fans of the tech company of taking their infatuation to an extreme.
People have gone to great lengths to prove their love of Apple with tattoos, bumper stickers and home shrines to outmoded Mac computers. Apple's cult-like following was highlighted in a 2009 documentary called "Macheads."
A blog, aptly titled Cult of Mac, wrote on Thursday about Oakland, California, resident Gary Allen's cross-country pilgrimage to Apple's first store in Virginia to celebrate the retail chain's 10th anniversary this week.
In speeches, Pope Benedict XVI has said technology consumption poses a threat to religion and the Roman Catholic church. The holy leader told a Palm Sunday crowd last month that technology cannot replace God.
However, apparently it may inspire god-like devotion." |

I'm trying to decide between a Verizon iPhone and an LTE equipped Droid, and the sheer amount of information out there is dizzying.
Is the text I quoted from a post from 10 days ago still the predominant opinion? And just how important is the LTE issue for me when deciding which phone to go for?

If anybody's not on an unlimited data plan, you should check out a program called Onavo. It basically installs a systemwide proxy that works in the background of almost all the apps you run. Any data requests get sent though Onavo's servers and shrunk down before getting sent to you. They claim it can save you as much as 80% on your data usage. 5/24/2011 4:25:49 PM |

It's pretty well accepted at this point that the next iPhone won't be LTE. It's also looking more and more like an iPhone 4s with lighter updates than a true iPhone 5.
Youre really the only person that can say whether LTE is worth it to you. Personally I don't consider it a big deal. It's a PHONE so I don't need massive data speeds. I've been happy with Verizon 3G for the last several years and turned down a 4G HTC Thunderbolt for my iPhone after several defective Droid Xs. The extra speed when I'm in a 4G area would be neat but I'd rather have stability and I NEED battery life that 4G phones aren't capable of providing right now.
As for your decision between the 2, you need to figure out what you want most. Android will let you play around with everything much easier than an iPhone. More new "features" are available with android as well. iPhone gives you stability (even the most stable android roms seem to be less stable than stock iOS), battery life, and a more "finished" product both in terms of the phone and apps. I've done BB, Android, and now I'm on iPhone. I wouldn't touch another BB but I do miss some stuff from Android. The retina display is awesome but it was hard losing the 4.3" display on my DX. I also had to spend $40 to get a GPS app since I used the stock Android nav. Finally, the voice capabilities of Android is great and very useful (not so much with iOS). All that said, I have 0 interest in another Android phone until at least 3.0 is out.5/24/2011 7:18:18 PM |

dave421 All American 1391 Posts user info edit post |
Actually,i think it was $30 but the free ones I tried are ok if you need gps once a month maybe but there's a huge difference between them and something like Navigon or Google's stock offering. I may use it once in a week or 5 times in a day trying to find several different job sites or offices. I also like that mine is now ON the phone and I don't have to download maps if I'm out in the mountains with little to no service (not that that was an option with google).

^^I tried both of them. Navfree just sucked. It would have to "catch up" to me all the time and several times it couldn't locate addresses. Look at the reviews for it. 2.5 stars with twice as many 1star reviews as 5 star. I downloaded Mapquest also but it force closed every time I tried to use it. It looks like they have since updated it though so it may be a viable choice now.
If you look at reviews, Navigon and Tomtom are rated #1 always. There's a reason for it. With android, the stock google navigation is great and perfectly useable. It had a couple of issues but they were minor overall and you were looking at $50+ for an app to replace it that wasn't much better. That's not the case with the iPhone was my point. Some people can obviously get by with a free navigation app on the iPhone. That just wasn't me when I tested them out. With the ones that i tried, I often had to revert to the stock map app to figure out where I was after an app got me lost or couldn't find where I was trying to go. Maybe with the update to Mapquest that's changed but I don't know. 5/25/2011 5:08:29 PM |
