living in an uptown hotel will be cheaper (80th st to 110 st) and you would still make it to time sq in like 20 mins.
get a subway map and travel via subways (its really easy) if you planning to stay for 3 days or more get the unlimited weekly travel pass for like 21$ and its totally worth it... you can travel all the subways and some of the metro buses also. once you know the subways you can travel anywhere in NYC
dont act like a tourist and you wont risk getting mugged

^ hahah, one time, I fell asleep on an uptown train that went into the bronx. I was only about 17 at the time and all of a sudden I wake up to the sound of "Last stop, the Bronx." Fuck me. So I decided while I was there, I might as well check it out. Nothing special. But I did get a tasty donut from dunkin donuts.


haha, I love NYC.

Also, getting drunk in little italy and then finding your way back to where you're staying is a great amount of fun. Unless you break your zipper on your pants peeing in the subway station, then its just a challenge

oh while you in NYC defi visit this area known as Village (near Bleeker street).... its lined up with nice bars and has this awesome comedy club "The Comedy cellar" where Seinfeld started his career as a comic... they have awesome comics coming there... i was lucky to get to meet Dave Attel, Orni Adams and few more guys from the comedy club channel there.

china club has good night life... so has the adjoining one jade terrace.... webster hall is also fun they have a amateur strip show on friday nites

Some really good food places around museum of natural american history.. the streets 50th onwards and 8th ave have good restaurants

down from the celler there is a little bar called cafe' creloe...it's great. cheap drinks too. you have to look down for it (it's down stairs) but it's GReat.

it's just a wonderful place.

If anyone feels like droppin about $30 for an awesome live show/boat cruise and u'll be in/around NYC next weekend, friday july 16, umphreys mcgee is putting on a boat cruise show. leaves at 11pm, boards at 10pm does a river tour of the hudson and awesome views of the city. BEST LIVE MUSICIANS.. check it.

brother jimmy's supposedly gives a 15% discount with a valid southern id.

definately use the subways. much much cheaper. (and many times, much less scary)
espn zone is fun. (at times square) Central park is fun.

advice for avoiding trouble: don't go into any parks at night time.

A lot of people will be asking you to buy drugs there. I would suggest trying to find less sketchy people to buy drugs from...

However, if you decide to buy the drugs from those guys do NOT under any circumstance do it in the park. Most of the people selling are smart enough to know that, but you never know...

NYC is my favorite city - both sides of my family are from the city. Awesome place. Like everyone said wear comfortable shoes, because you will be doing more than your fair share of walking. It's cleaned up tons in the last few years, just watch out on the subway for pickpockets, they're really slick.

actually i was up there last week, and some dudes were going around selling postcards that actually had the towers as they were burning on them. lots of people yelled at them. one guy had a big knot on his head, so it's likely they've been beaten a few times for this.

there isn't a bunch of people selling nypd and nyfd hats and t's everywhere like before though.

i thought the hole at the site was crazy. it really hits you when you see it like that and realize that at the time the wtc was built, it had more office space then all of downtown chicago.

i am going to nyc on tuesday..

what are casual restaurants in nyc (between broadway and park avenue in midtown) that I can get in alone ? (restaurants that i dont look strange by sitting alone.. not many couples etc..)

plz gimme some advice!

Try and catch at least one show at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. If you're gonna be there on a Sunday, definitely make reservations for the ASSSSCAT show. It's basically an all-star lineup of improvisers, including UCB founders (and stars of the TV show "The Upright Citizens Brigade") Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts, Matt Besser and Amy Poehler. When I was last up in NYC, Tina Fey and Horatio Sanz also played with them in an ASSSSCAT show.

Other groups that are definitely worth your time to catch at the UCB.....

it's a wonderful city- most people either really love it or really hate it. go see the town, see the touristy sights, but also take time to go around and eat at some of the less traveled places. treat yourself to stay in a nice hotel where you'll get good service and ride the subway and taxis just for the experience. once you ride the subway a few times you'll be able to get anywhere on the island.

PS- dont look at maps out in the street. plan where you are going before you leave somewhere (ie a restaurant or a hotel room)

go to TKTS in times square for the cheapest tickets for musicals and theatre. they have tickets to all the most popular shows for almost half the price. and if you go to the actual box office of a theatre an hour before a show starts, you can get front row tickets through a lottery system

go!! and go soon! it's a beautiful city

this is the second time to visit nyc. i have seen most of the major tourist areas. i gotta wake up early while i am in nyc, so i dunno if i can go to a bar/club. i am looking for something that i can do/see early night. and also i need some advice/recommendation for....

1. subways are your friend. get a map and use it.
2. cabs can be pricey - ask for an estimate beforehand.
3. only use licensed cabs
4. if going out at night, use your head, i.e. don't go to harlem at 11pm
5. there are tons of broadway musicals and off broadway plays. afternoon sessions are good bets. evening tix can be harder to get.
6. lots of good food, just pick on and try it
7. chinatown is a fun place to go and spend the afternoon. take some $ and buy a fake rolex. also, eat some chinese there.
8. the statue of liberty is over-rated. it takes a large chunk of time to get over there and it just isn't worth it imo.
9. the empire state building is ok. good views. doesn't take that much time.
10. fao shwartz (sp) is fun. even for adults.
11. take in a yankees or mets game if you haven't seen a pro baseball game.
12. central park has a lot of neat things going on on weekends.
13. bronx zoo was pretty cool if you are into zoos.
14. you should go to times square at night - it really does look cool.
15. if you are into fashion and whatnot, 5th and madison avenues have a lot of boutiques and fashion houses
16. some cool bars/hotspots - fat black pussycat, sin sin, absolutely 4th, magnetic field, chumleys
17. good hotels - new yorker, soho grand, pennsylvania house, tribeca
18. good restaurants - daniel, primorski, caviarteria, caviar russe, med' cafe, basso est, vespa, caracas arepa bar, markt, new wonton garden, dim sum go go, fleur de sel, york grill, sal's and carmine pizza, arturos, jasmine, sea thai bistro
19. brighton beach has some cool russian/ukrainian stores and restaurants if you have time
20. lots of art galleries and museums - MOMA, guggenheim, frick collection, museum of sex (yep), etc.
21. radio city music hall
22. coney island is pretty cool if you have some time. get a hot dog and ride the oldest roller coaster in the usa (i think?)
23. ellis island - overrated imo but you can do the statue of liberty in one tour with it
24. go to the original tiffany's if you are into jewelry and crap you can't afford
25. madam tussands is entrertaining
26. spas - i didn't go but my aunt goes to finesse spa and says it is awesome. i have been to feline day spa... $$$ but it was definitely worth the one-time visit
27. greenwich village ny school of the arts

i love nyc - i go usually 3x per year. you won't see or do everything. just pick what kinds of things you like and go for it. enjoy!

i got a hotel near times square... it cost $90 per night. $200 for hotel, $170 for flight.. not bad, is it?
