Official Hang Out and Fly at Dix today...got to see dustm fly a wicked little delta wing 049 plane...any of you other guys on Tee Dub?

Seems like half the folks there had issues. My radio decided to go tits up and leave me with half-assed rudder control..flew twice and that was it. Will be swapping out a gimball pot or two this week.

Bryan had 049 issues, but then doesn't ANYBODY who flies Cox engines?

And everybody had tall grass/wind issues. It was too gusty out there, and most of the planes out there were trainers/floaters. The rest were sailplanes.

But anyway, a good time was had by all. I can't wait until next weekend.

I will be bringing the weedeater...

[Edited on September 26, 2004 at 9:50 PM. Reason : tall grass, dammit...]

after you left, lil dan flew his video-equipped "cheap fun" cross country through centenial and shot some cool arial footage... and i crashed the little delta 3 times. first two were just kinda rubs with the ground but the third was a little harder nose-in and i gotta fix the firewall, but no major damage to anything important except for a stripped gear in one of the servos.

truck with me, him, and (forgot his name) the guy that was flying the histart launched glider in the back spotting

it was quite exciting... first attempt we got a bit of pucker when he went deadstick on centenial blvd... he ended up landing it in a short tree w/no damage... landing is on video

anyone have any ideas for cutting a bunch of different size circles out of iron-on film? like .5" - 1.5"

How many is a bunch? You trying to go for the Bugs Bunny "Rabbititis" look? Trying to fuck with Elmer Fudd?

Seriously, it's a pain in the ass. I usually get a collection of cylinders the right diameter (drinking glasses, film cans, etc., and trace them out by hand on the backing film using a Sharpie marker. Then cut with the best scissors money can buy (or at least a pair of good sharp Fiskars scissors). Cutting that shit with a hobby knife or razor blade is for the birds. Even then, circles don't come out perfectly when they're small (bigger ones are easy to get by on the fudge factor).

Other option: look for a couple of those custom paper punchers like you can get at AC Moore or Michaels. Especially if you have LOTS to cut.

i'm gonna recover the lil delta when i fix the nose... i'm goin for a dot matrix fade effect. i've got some little uber sharp lexan scissors for car bodies, so i'll use those and the trace idea. i'm also looking at lightening the fin and cutting some out of the wing panels... next time i want unlimited vertical

Ahhh yes. Sounds like a good idea. I like the graphic idea.

I was thinking a while back about making a hot wire foam cutting bow and power supply (mainly for making custom fiberglass bucks and forms)...do you have more of the delta wings? or is that the only set you have?

On another note, I know it's supposed to be an el cheapo and quick-slap-together blast, but for ultimate lightness, ever think about doing built-up?

I have thought about built-up but honestly i dont think the thing would last too long... To me the only reason this thing is fun is because i dont have to worry about a total loss when it makes violent contact with terra firma, which with me and my dumb thumbs is pretty much inevitable even if i was being extra careful. A built up version would, however, be a much better performer. I dont have any more cores, but i do have stuff for a power supply and i have some stainless foam cutting wire (doesnt relax as much as nichrome when heated). i can try to contact larry lewis and see if he'll let me borrow the fixture they used... You want one? We could all do some cheap pylon racing

That would be fun as hell. Let me get a little more proficient though...I'm a bit outta practice.

Yesterday's glitchiness was only HALF the radio's fault...

Yeah you'll need some sort of mixing too for the elevons but they have these lil electronic things now you plug the servos into, so you wont need a new tx. I talked to Larry... He's gonna trace the wing root for me, so i'll be able to cut some in a couple weeks or however long it takes me to save enough round-to-its

I was gonna say that my radio had elevon mixing, but...

It doesn't. However, I have Flap/Elevator mix and Rudder/Aileron coordinated mix. Yeow. What a great radio. Well, for '88 it wasn't bad.

Radio appears to be fixed. Soldered the wire back on the pot, and while I was at it, fixed the flaps/elevator mix volume pot (was seized).

Any of you fellas (other than those who were at the field Sunday) ever seen an old World Engines Expert radio?

BTW, Bryan...what's kickin' yer ass, man?

you know, i never used control mixing, even when i had one of those wicked 7-channel Futabas with the LCD screen and fortyeleven switches and dials. i only used like 2-3% exponential, too...not enough to even feel. for the most part, i didn't even use dual rates. i pretty much just did everything manually.

the engine floods above 1/2 turn open on the needle... so basically it runs out what i squirt in the carb and starts having longer and longer bursts from 0-1/4, then above 1/4 enough fuel oozes in between when it quit and when i flip it again to get it to start but not enough to keep it goin...
then a little above that it will sustain in reverse, but it spits some out the carb (runs much slower in reverse) then i get decent forward spurts on up to 1/2, then it will do that repeatably on the same needle setting as many times as i want... then THE VERY NEXT FUCKING CLICK and the engine will spurt forward and then quit, then the next flip and THE DAMN THING IS FLOODED

hehe i use like all the mixes on my futaba 6xa with my glider... the ailerons are mixed to the flaps so they act as flapperons (one servo each) and then the flap knob is mixed into the throttle lever for on the fly adjustment (still have rudder control and dont have to take my hand off and find the little knob)

i've been reading about them... evidently i need to try some higher nitro fuel, conventional cox head, and i'm hoping tapping the muffler instead will help

One of the motors I mooched when I was doing the robot shit.

I dunno the next time I'm going to be available to get up to Maryland to get all my stuff, and even after that, its spread out over two attic rooms and a garage so I'll probably be missing stuff.

Question is, can you fly these things in the dead of winter? Can the glow plugs get hot enough?

^^Hey, Bryan...I apologize fer not givin' you a call yet. It has been a rather hectic week.

^Tad...as long as you don't mind freezing your hands off, you can fly any time you want. I used to fly all winter long. The planes love it because the air is denser...everything seems to fly better in the winter.

And the glow plugs don't have a problem. Though the engines pop back extra hard when they do, and for hand-proppers like myself, that can smart. But then I'm a dying breed. Everybody else uses chicken sticks and electric starters. BUT NOT ME! *has the scars to prove it*

VERY cool...I have always wanted to pick one of them up. Usually did not have enough money (I know 13 bucks ain't a lot but I was poor as hell over the course of the spring semester).

Fixing to start drawing out plans for polyhedral wing extensions for my plane. Addicted to the idea of a floater now. A whole new plane will soon be in the works, but for now, I'm gonna just build some removable extensions (with plug in tubes).
