i already have said sleater-kinney's "the woods" but i'll say that common's "be" is a close second.

i have never really gotten into any of sleater kinney's albums for some reason...that being said, im gonna check them out in my soon to be new home of madison, wi anyway

but yeah, common "be" is great...but i could be biased towards chicago musicians or albums about the state of ILL

i will publish my top 10 at the end of the year, be on the lookout

There have been 4 albums that have really stood out above the rest so far for me:

1) Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
2) Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
3) Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die
4) Decemberists - Picaresque

Honestly, I think the lyrics to half the songs are just fucking retarded.

The music is great, but I'd prefer if Corin was just going LA LA LA LA the whole time.

I think the best thematic lyric on the whole record is the dumbest one: "Happy makes me a modern girl." After "Jumpers," the fact that it make no sense makes the mood shift and the meaning of the song that much more powerful.

Then again, I don't really give a fuck about bad lyrics if the music's good. Never have, never will.

On the third hand, most of the great American songwriters, particularly Brian Wilson, know the power of the gibberish vocal.

I love the gibberish vocal.

Jumpers is fine. Modern girl is fine. Most of it irritates me.

I agree with Piquaresque and The Woods so far. I have to also add The New Pornographer's Twin Cinema.

This fall, look out for Little Brother's The Minstrel Show.

Pretty much things people have mentioned already.

Also, I am not sure if "In Motion" by Copeland came out this year, but it is rad.

And I know Mastodon's "Leviathan" came out late last year, but... I just wanna mention how fucking awesome that album is.

1. Sigur Ros - Takk - absolutely beautiful, by far their best work
2. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois -tied because its not exactly my favorite type of music, but i recognize its a damn fine album
2. Brothers Past - This Feelings Called Goodbye - tied because its more my type of music, so i like it more then Illinois. a great album by a great band...if you havent heard it, you should.
3. Beck - Guerro - very catchy and fresh....he took his sound in yet another direction
4. Gorillaz - Demon Days - it took a while for me to get into the album, but I think its very dynamic and different.

I gave the Decemberists and Sleater-Kinney a listen, and while I did like them, they didn't strike me as "best album" material. I did like the mixing of The Woods though...very raw and rough. I have Clap your hands say yeah! but I havent listened to it yet.

oh, and my worst album of the year goes to:

Weezer- Make Believe

I couldnt even make it through half the songs...It sounds like Rivers went back to middle school and is having teenager problems again, so he needed to write an album about it.

I second weezer as the worst album of the year. and this is coming from someone who has seen them four times dating back to the pinkerton tour. just awful.

oh, and I really enjoyed that AC Newman album as well.

Between the Buried and Me - ALASKA

best, most dynamic, most unique metal/metalcore/hardcore/whateveryoucallthismusic CD to come out in the scene in forever it feels like. seriously i am humbled as musician by the dynamics of this CD.

the keyboard and synth is done better than any other metalcore band out there(of course only equaled by horse the band :p)
the vocal range, melodies, and creatively surpass most out there..the clean and singing vocals are NOT cliche like every other band out there. and there are many diff types of non screaming vocals on the cd. not just the standard "sing the most obvious melody in an untrained voice" cliche metalcore singing out there (cough cough it dies today, atreyu, killswitch, etc etc etc).

the guitar and drumwork needs no explination to a musician. shredding yet more importantly with TONS of melody and creativity just brewing with understanding of music.

the clean parts on this CD are the best hands down without question of any metal band ive heard in my opinion. this whole CD just breaks down all the stigmatas ppl have of this band and metal bands out there all being the same and shredding without substance. this album is nothing BUT substance and not just overdone shredding.

best first listen of any CD ive heard in years, hands down. maybe since my first deftones CD i heard back in 6th grade that got me into music.

Every time I see someone mention Emery, I think they're talking about young Ottawa Senators goaltender Ray Emery, not the band.

^^ Also, that Pete Yorn album came out in 2001.
