I think its a combination of 2 things:

1. If you use great material, theres always the risk that in another couple seasons the material will be watered down and not as funny...you dont wanna pull a Michael Jordan...go out in your prime like Barry Sanders

2. The success may have changed Dave, or began to change him psychologically for the worse...basically he could've realized he was on the verge of "selling out" or at least not doing the type of shows that everybody loved, and along with #1, gotten out while he was ahead

I remember he said something in some of his early stand-up, before he got big. It was to the effect of "I don't ever want to get famous. I'd like people to know who I am, but when you get really famous shit just gets crazy." etc etc.

I think he's fed up with going out in public and having everyone run up to him saying "I'm Rick James, bitch!". He even said that in another stand-up routine, that he's sick of being out with his kids and having that happen all the time.

Chappelle and CC are just realizing (unlike all of you) that the show sucks

its not even funny

even they were surprised at the incredible response the show got

but then they saw that the dumbasses that liked the show were exactly that: dumbasses

and the world was stupider for watching

and Chappelle wasn't ready to be a god of the dumbasses

so in an attempt to save society from the pandora's box they open they chose to stop the show
