although minimum wage is 5.15, there are plenty of unskilled labor jobs around that pay up to $10. when i was in high school i worked for $5.15/hr as a bus boy, but with even petty tips, my wages were around $6/hr. after two weeks i was raised to $6/hr, upping my total income close to $7/hr. the waitresses whining when they didnt make $100 in a night (~$14/hr).
if, in this hypothetical situation, you couldnt find anything close to you for more, i would say MOVE. mexicans have found great success with this principle. the male often leaves his family at home while he ventures into more prosperous lands to send home the fruits of his labor. he may not be able to see his family that often, but he is providing. this is sacrifice, and its not easy.
thus economics is the study of the allocation of SCARCE resources, so its true to say that there is not an infinite supply of higher paying blue collar jobs around. but i certainly wouldnt just sit on my ass accept that i can never obtain higher than the bare minium.
in short, i would have to say you're a chump for working at only $5.15/hr.

I think you guys need to keep in mind that I no longer work for minimum wage
it was simply a means to an end
however, I can now sympathize with the plight of the worker something that a lot of you can't do, apparently 9/6/2005 4:22:45 PM |

No, they cant, and there are simple reasons why
1) people working min. wage are lazy and just want drugs or booze 2) you just dont "get it" 9/6/2005 4:27:13 PM |

I sympathize with the plight of the consumer. Something that Snewf can't do, apparently. 9/6/2005 5:14:52 PM |

That's like projecting that anybody can be a good President.....obviously this isn't the case
CEO's are paid 431times their laborers because they are the leaders of the ship so to speak. Its a job that not many people can handle therefore those that can are appropriately compensated.9/6/2005 7:29:12 PM |

I DO sympathize with the plight of the consumer
which is why I don't bitch about outsourcing 9/6/2005 10:17:52 PM |

^ Glad to hear it. So why bitch about low wages? It is nothing more than outsourcing jobs from high paid workers to low paid workers. 9/7/2005 12:05:07 AM |

This is why America is outsourcing all of industry anyway. Not a surprise to anyone but making the point. That's why lean manufacturing, and maintenance intensive activities have bombarded the American plants. The money is in the process, not the labor. That's why I'm happy to be in mechanical engineering right now. 9/7/2005 12:28:30 AM |

a living wage, indeed " |
