The only good thing is that Sadam is no longer in power.
I think it was TGD who said in another thread there's lots of good Bush has done (be he didn't list any...). What are they? I really would like to know, so I can temper my cynicism.

I'm just asking for stuff good to say about Bush, so if some random person came up to me on the street and said "what has Bush done good?" I would have something to say. As a Bush-hater, the things I think of are the things I listed. It's my bias. I want to know what kind of things a Bush-lover, like yourself, would say. It's not a difficult question. I don't know if you attack on me is an indication that I'm right about Bush's performance, or if you're just an idiot.9/8/2005 8:37:12 AM |

Why? The US didn't jump into WWI until near the very end and contributed little in terms of bodies, weapons or anything else.
Although if pryderi wants to use WWI as the standard to which all future conflicts should aspire, I'm hoping that means we won't have to endure anymore threads highlighting the public opinion polls on Iraq...9/8/2005 12:56:09 PM |

seeing as how the soviets came into the pacific theater not a week before we dropped the bomb, the war would have been over in a matter of weeks had there been an invasion of the mainland.
lots more casualties, but when the soviets invade you, you best get out of the way.

^^ Most historians agree that the war would have gone on for years had the bomb not been dropped. I saw one estimate that the war could have lasted until 1950 without the bomb. The Soviets entered the Pacific theater in an effort to grab land in China prior to the end of hostilities, they would have been extremely reluctant to launch a large scale invasion of the mainland following their huge losses on the eastern front.
The popular slogan in Japan towards the end of the war was "Ten Million die for the emperor." Leaders made speeches urging civilians to fight with bamboo spears and told them that they were unworthy if they couldn't kill at least one invader before being killed.
Projections for American casualties were as high as one million. Look at Iwo Jima; it took 110,000 marines (25,000+ became casualties) over a month to secure less than eight square miles of land. Do you really think that the entire island of Japan would fall any easier? Its ridiculous to say that the battle for Japan would have been a short or easy fight.
^ Another brilliant post from pryderi.

^that was the slogan all along
now we could go into the arguments as to whether it would have been more effective to detonate the bomb on hiroshima, over tokyo harbor, or on mt. fuji (each one would have sent the same message to the military, that their days were numbered).
but the japanese did fear soviet intervention. ive read accounts by japanese officers discussing how much they wanted to avoid contact w/ the soviets. the japanese and soviets had some real issues in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. the military were the ones making all the descisions, the emperor was just a complete tool and never exerted control over strategy.
