Yeah that's what I said, I'd be tempted to turn it sideways and go old school, haha.

Sword fighting would be awesome. It would be interesting to see any Prince of Persia applications.

Wow. So that definitely surprised me, but it didn't exactly set my world on fire. I think they can make this work, but it's definitely something altogether new.

While some speculate that this will make games hard to port to the Revolution, the thing has controller ports for Gamecube controllers and the Xbox 360 and PS3 controllers are essentially the same as their predecessors, so it shouldn't be that hard.

I mean, yeah, I'd like to try it, but it just seems kind of ridiculous. Maybe there's some super innovative way of turning it into wonderful gameplay, but I just don't see it.

nintendo clearly knows what its doing. they cant win by doing the same shit -- they are being out muscled.

lets face it, there will be shortcommings (for all we know perhaps there will be controller backwards compatibility) BUT there will be really cool new shit

FPS, grappling, light sabers, starfox-esque space fighting, or simply looking could all be revolutionized.

If I wanted to swing a light saber I would buy a fucking light saber.

On Tatooine.

"You are BEING Link with that controller. Imagine controlling Link with the analog stick in one hand, and directing the Master Sword with the other. Or aiming the Hookshot with it, then pulling the trigger to fire it exactly where you want it to go. Of course, these are speculations, not facts from a demo of "Zelda Revolution" (or whatever the system will be called). But it's an example of the kind of immersion that a controller set-up like this makes possible."

I'm all for it too and can't wait to try it. I hope Nintendo has a good stratagy behind the system with a lot of game ideas because I think the most difficult hurdle would be from 3rd party support. Getting those popular games across all platforms would be difficult for Nintendo because of having to redesign entire game mechanics. Looks like Nintendo is definitely going for that Apple niche.

I wasn't expecting this at all. I thought it would have like a screen in the middle or 3D projection or something. But not a freakin remote. I can see how FPS, RPG, and RTS games would work perfectly w/ this new controller. I think it would be great but I can't see how you can play other game genres. I seriously still can't see how you can play Smash w/ this controller or some fighting game. I didn't see any big 3rd party developers on board w/ this system besides those 3 mentioned on IGN. I just hope the Resident Evil series will continue on this system and really, really, really good games and good 3rd party support. Otherwise, Nintendo will just fuck themselves up again.

Well this is interesting for sure. Here are a few thoughts that have gone through my head.

First, why are so many people worried about whether or not you can use a standard controler with it? The thing is going to be backwords compatable with all of nintendo's systems and has 4 Game Cube ports on it.

Second, rumble pack technology has never really meant anything to games. Woo I get a rumble, woopty-fucking-do. But as sensitive as they were making it out to be in the hands on article, it sounds like this will be the first time that the rumbling of the controler will actually affect the game play. Imagine playing a first person shooter and you get shot. When you take a hit, the controler starts to rumber. But because its so sensitive, your screen starts to shake and it makes it difficult to aim. Not exactly an earth-shattering thing, but it will be interesting to see how people take advantage of this.

My biggest concern is that I know that I tend to move my arms around when playing a game as I get more involved. Having a controler that measures every movement of your arm has it atvantages, but what happens when you play for a long period of time? What happens if you get excited and jerk real fast?

It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.

i agree -- this has the potential to be a very interesting effect. the screen could shake, or maybe just the pointer shakes.

i also considered the fatigue effect, as im sure nintendo has. maybe you can only play for a few hours at a time...maybe the 3d mouse is always optional and you can revert to a cube controller wherever.

I know of several controllers that would agree with you

I highly doubt this. This is a big deal to them, and they're going to want to push it for all its worth. The innovation of this controller, and its potential affect it has on how people play games, is the whole selling point behind the new system. To put so much effort and money into this only to say, well you can use a regular controler if you want would be stupid on Nintendo's part.

A couple of other thoughts that have also come to me while typing this. One, the more I think about it, the less I see fatigue becomming a factor unless you were required to hold the controler steady for long periods of time. Two, anyone else wonder about the "power" button in the top corner? I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere what exactly it does, though I'm sure it just powers up the system. Kind of an interesting little idea if you ask me, because if thats the case, you can just go in, plop down, and play a game just like you would for a movie or tv show.

why the fuck are they connected with a cord? seems stupid. its one thing to swing your arm, another to take your whole body with that swing.

Looks interesting and promising.

2 huge "off the top of my head" complaints:

Try getting the EA Sports team to make MVP Baseball '07 for Xbox 360, PS3, then writing ENTIRELY NEW CRAP to make that controller act like the bat, escp. when Nintendo software sales net them the least money of all 3 systems.

And I'm very pissed as I doubt that controller will work with a projector setup. Most light guns and the like won't work without an actual television set of some kind to hit.

^EA has already said they intend to adapt their sports games to work with it.

I would definitely buy a Madden game that let me get inside the QB's helmet, pull back, and throw the ball precisely where I wanted it, leading the receiver or whatever, over something that looks a little bit nicer and plays like the last 5 Maddens on PS3 or 360.

Getting this to work will be a chore as well. A football has a certain weight. That controller is light. Finding the right force to throw the ball will certainly be a difficulty. And you know peeps will be like "I hate this controller, I didn't throw it there!!!"

Look I don't know what they're going to do but the VP of EA said this so I think they have plans:

"Game control is essential - it's the area where perhaps the most game-play improvement can be made," said John Schappert, Sr. Vice President and General Manager of Electronic Arts Canada. "While our portfolio represents a full array of titles across all genres, I think our sports titles might be the first to immediately take advantage of what this novel 'freehand' type of control has to offer."

"Also, if you're wondering, there's no set limit on the distance one can use the remote yet, but Nintendo has tested it on up to 80"-100" screens and says it works fantastically. It can be used on tubes, LCDs, plasma, projection or any kind of screen because the sensor is connected like a flat antenna under the display. "

I would speculate that such a controller would require a lot of arm movement, instead of just thumb and finger pressing. I think long gaming sessions would become tiring.

OMFG GOD FOBID WE BURN A FEW CALORIES

this is what we want, we want that fusion...for the sake of our collective health. i made a thread a little while ago about how the eventual direction of video games will involve a lot of physical immersion.

its the only way to up the intensity.

You can hold a controller while resting your wrists on your lap or knees . I dont think you can do the same with the revolution controller and still have the degree of pointing/maneuvering control that you'd need for a game.

anyone else think it's strange that the back of the remote thingy has a battery cover?

it seems strange that with today's standard of rechargeable electronics (cell phones, psp, gba, ipod) they're gonna have people buying batteries all the time...

here's the pic i'm talking about (don't wanna post it cos it's huge)

1. the ign guys were extremely impressed with the way it handled, and since none of us have had that the chance to actually use it yet, i don't mind taking their word for it until it actually comes out.

2. you can plug a gamecube controller into the box as well, so i don't think anything is being lost here
