why were they handed out?
obviously because the media and red cross put pressure on them to.
and just as obviously, they wouldn't've done so otherwise. 11/1/2005 12:01:25 AM |

1. I'm Southern Baptist, and this absolutely blows my mind.
Quote : | "They chose not to give water to thirsty people because the cans/bottles had logos on them. That's morally abhorrent." |
Quote : | "whatever you did to the least of these, you did to Me" |
2. I'd say that most Baptists drink, or at the very least don't really give a shit. It's not something you'll ever hear mentioned in most Southern Baptist churches (in my experience, at least).

There is a difference between drinking yourself and encouraging others to drink.
While most babtists engage in the former, they would undoubtedly frown upon the latter. 11/1/2005 8:14:35 AM |

Is it possible that there are some sort of restrictions and regulations on exactly what must be printed on the can?
I am pretty sure that the cans had to say who bottled it and where it came from as a matter of accountability right?
What is the big deal that they put their logo on? It wasn't a very flashy advertisement if it is the white can style that Clear5 posted. 11/1/2005 8:57:04 AM |

Quote : | "no, its a poor excuse for charitable behavior
everyone knows that the beer companies are the first to show up with water" |
it is because they have the resouces and production facilities to ship out water cheaply and in mass quantities.
coca cola already makes bottled water. do they donate it?
i mean it is thinly veiled free publicity for AB (both the initial act, and the media getting all over it) , but i still dont see the fuss.11/1/2005 9:12:12 AM |

I posted this story on dirtygreek.org http://www.dirtygreek.org/journal/journalId/1564
and got an email:
Quote : | "Volunteers working with the Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief Unit honored the request of the host pastor to set aside canned water with an Anheuser-Busch logo. At no time was anyone deprived of water. In fact, there was a huge surplus of bottled and canned water available at the Clewiston relief site. There was never any disruption in the supply of water being given out to members of the public who continued to receive food, water and other types of assistance from Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief workers. It is an absolute falsehood to suggest -- as many irresponsible bloggers have -- that the Baptist volunteers withheld the basic needs of life from Floridians impacted by the hurricane. Contrary to misinterpretations of news reports, no one was denied access to water. One may disagree with the strong stand that many Southern Baptists take against the consumption of alcohol. One may even regard such opposition to alcohol as offensive. But it\'s impossible to say truthfully that this conviction caused any inconvenience or shortage for victims of Hurricane Wilma. The facts are exactly the opposite. The fact is that virtually all of the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers serve selflessly -- taking time away from employment and family to minister in the name of Jesus Christ. Churches such as First Baptist Church, Clewiston, graciously serve as host sites -- providing a place where food, water and other necessities of life may be obtained by anyone in need -- without regard to religion or any other demographic consideration.

^by saying you dont know what to believe, are you actually saying that you think southern baptists would withhold water from people who had none just because it had a beer logo on it? 11/2/2005 10:48:56 AM |

that any southern baptist would? no. In fact, I'm sure that most would still give out the water. Do I think that any of them would withhold water because of a label? I'm sure of it. Why not? After some christians have said they don't want their children vaccinated for HPV to prevent cervical cancer (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/10/31/MNG2LFGJFT1.DTL#story) because it might encourage sex and "activist pharmacists" have refused to fill prescriptions (http://www.dirtygreek.org/journal/journalId/1540) based on religious reasons, why in the world WOULDN'T I believe such a thing? Certainly there are some people who are anti-alcohol who would be this serious about it. Many? I don't know. but there are definitely some. 11/2/2005 11:10:20 AM |

it is stupid. this is free advertising that HELPS the community. of course they do it for goodwill and community outreach, etc. that is why businesses donate, to get the publicity that comes from helping the community. i mean, would they boycott the NFL because the players donate their time to organiztions then make commercials out of it.
but the bottom line is, it was still free water to people who had none.
i will not touch the hypocrisy of it. 11/2/2005 11:45:38 AM |
