Y'all are forgetting about UNC though. Even if all on that checklist happens, UNC could have 5 conference wins, to our 4. And I don't see much reason why they'd pick us over them. 11/10/2005 6:10:22 PM |

some of you are under the impression that conference wins are all that matters, they look at overall and mainly last 5 games 11/10/2005 6:14:34 PM |

Swofford encourages bowls to pick teams according to conference rank, except in situations like GT going to the Peach Bowl, etc.
Thats why UNC got the nod for the Peach Bowl in 2001 when we both had the same record. UNC had a 5-3 conference record, and we were 4-4. So they went to the Peach and we had to settle for the MicronPC bowl. 11/10/2005 6:20:42 PM |

The only way it would be close for Carolina is if they beat Maryland AND Duke.
If we win out we're 4-4 (7-4) record, and have won our last 5 games, with two marquee wins.
IF Carolina beats Maryland and Duke, but loses to VT, they have a 5-3 (6-5) record, losing the last 2 of 5, with one marquee win.
Both teams travel well, so it'd really be a toss-up in my mind. In the end, I think our 5 victories in a row would tip the scales.11/11/2005 4:13:10 PM |

Of course UNC is gonna beat Duke. Is that even a question? They could potentially beat VT. Crazier things have happened.
If they win 2 of their last 3, precedent says that they will get picked before us for the Peach bowl or whatever bowl we are competing for. It doesn't help that Swofford is a UNC alum and he'll do some arm-twisting to make sure that UNC gets favorable treatment. 11/11/2005 4:36:23 PM |

Hmm... I'm not sure I buy that. I can see the BCS taking ND (which is obviously going to happen) and then Ohio State if they win out (even with 2 losses) honestly.. That would make sense to me b/c it could set up more intriguing matchups..
Rose: Texas - USC
Fiesta: ND - Penn State
Orange: Miami - Ohio State (rematch that BCS is probably jacking off too)
Sugar: LSU/Georgia - West Virginia
I can see VT playing Louisville in the Gator Bowl.. which would definitely capture my interest.. I think it would be a fun game to watch...

eh, OSU still has to play at Michigan, but if they win that game, I think you're right and they should get the bid.
Thing is though, ND is ranked 3 or 4 below VT, so would it be fair of the BCS to pick outside the top 8? (not that theBCS is fair anyway) 11/14/2005 2:51:11 PM |
NyM410 J-E-T-S 50085 Posts user info edit post |
No probably not. But ND can be in the Top 12 of the BCS I believe and be picked for an at-large. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that please... 11/14/2005 2:52:31 PM |

well if its top 12 for ND, they they will definately get the BCS bid over VT (i would think) because ND has a much larger fan base nationally...of course VT travels, so who knows. 11/14/2005 3:06:30 PM |

Ivan Maisel on ESPN.com today says.....
Quote : | "1. First rule of bowl bids: the invitation goes to the team that gets TV ratings and travels. Call it whatever bias you like. But the bottom line is, well, the bottom line. My guess is that after Notre Dame, the one at-large bid available will go to a 10-1 Alabama or a 9-2 Ohio State ahead of 10-1 Virginia Tech or 10-1 Oregon." |

There's a rumor out that tomorrow the Gator Bowl will announce Miami-Louisville as their matchup. That certainly sounds right for the ACC, since the loser of the championship game was never expected to play 2 straight games in Jacksonville. But at this point, I really have to believe that if Florida State loses (as expected), I'm not even sure the Peach Bowl would want them at this point. They would be 7-5 at that point (losses to Virginia, NC State, Clemson, Florida, and Virginia Tech) and have lost 4 straight games. They have absolutely NO post-season momentum. BC will probably get the Peach Bowl, and I don't know how far down Florida State will fall.

if they were gonna do bowden spurrier, i think they'd be better off to make clemson vs. usc. they'd make a killing, the whole state of sc would flock to atlanta to see a rematch of this years game. not gonna happen though, bc is gonna get the bid. 11/27/2005 11:02:42 PM |

I really don't think they'd do Clemson-South Carolina part 2 in the Peach Bowl. I don't think ticket sales would be poor, but ...
a) that was a game very late in the season, so there would have been how many weeks? 6 between the 2 games? b) Not that it hasn't happened before, but I don't think the Peach Bowl would take Clemson 2 years in a row (they played Tennessee there last year - it might as well have been the Orange Bowl ) 11/27/2005 11:57:21 PM |

Seriously though, you have no idea how insane Clemson/USC matchups are. My dad went to USC and took me to every home game since I was born. The Clemson game was always scary as hell. I bet if you had those teams play eachother every day for a week you'd still sell out an 80K+ stadium every time. 11/28/2005 12:04:49 AM |
