I tried about 10 times unsuccessfully to quit smoking, twice (or maybe three) times using the nicotine patch. I even quit for over a year successfully, then went back to smoking.
This most recent time I quit using Nicotine Gum, and it was easier using the gum than I had expected. You can just chew the gum whenever you want a cig, and it takes care of part of the oral fixation that goes along with smoking.
Before I quit last, I was smoking anywhere to a pack, to a pack and a half of cigarettes per day. I would go through at least 1 carton per week. 11/10/2005 12:25:58 AM |

you should be thankful you don't live in the country where i live.
a pack: $1.07 - $2 (phil morris menthols - cartier)
marlboros are $1.33
here is another method: move to the UK: a pack is $7
how much is a pack in the US?

maybe... i was there this summer, and caught a glimpse of cigs behind the counter.
there were all GBP 4.xx
that translates to $7.50 - $9
that was in Bath. Probably closer to what you said in London.
also depends on value of dollar to pound. 11/10/2005 12:47:06 AM |

I started smoking when I was 16...and I managed to quit cold turkey at least 4 times in my life...once for 5 years.
I've been smoke-free for over two years (closer to three) and plan on keeping it that way.
Cold turkey is the only way that works for me. That's also how I quit drinking. Just quit and force yourself to never look back. It's really hard for the first two weeks, but after that, it's all downhill. You'll be amazed at how much better you feel.
The first time I quit for any appreciable time was when I was 18. Hell, my dick damn near stayed hard for two weeks. Yeah, smoking does have that effect. 11/10/2005 12:54:58 AM |

see the way i do it (i still smoke though) is that i started out with ultra light marlboro, then gradually went up to lights then red then tried the new stuff marlboro had, then wanted to change to camel, then to menthol newports and so on...then i was like fuck it...i wanna either slow down or quit, so i went back down to ultra light marlboro...and recently i wanted something heavier so i am a light person now, but will never go to red...
so moral of the story is either get ultra light, or change cigarett brands ( taste shittier depending on what your use to) should make you want to stop...
oh, 1 method i tried was also, everytime i wanted to buy a pack i would put it in a saving jar.. lasted about 2 monthes...but ended up using money to buy more cigz... 11/10/2005 1:01:48 AM |

i sopped for a year, went back, stopped again for 5 months, then went back, stoped for 2 month after that, then now iam back..
1st thing you should ask yourself is: WHY THE FUCK AM I DOING IT?
then if you have a convincing answer then keep on until you die, if not then your just a silly ass lame bitch...
as for me my answer is: Work, stress, college, life and i hate (pills) tylonol and advil for headaches.... 11/10/2005 1:11:41 AM |

technically, it takes away the headach in a fun way where you blow air in and out..rather than swallwoing some unkown shit that manufacturers produce...
But seriously, if you want to quit, ASK WHY AM I DOING IT??
Is it worth it, and has it changed anything? have i gained or lost anything?? is it helping or hurting?
i know i cant run anymore, but i sure can beat them ricers on the road ...
...so its a personal and mental thaang..just have a discussion with yourself and desires... anyone can do it and everyone has the cababilities to do it (either quit or keep on) but YOU CAN if your sincere about it!

well bud, for me health is an issue. I'd like to get as close as I can to the athletic ability I had in high school, and that ain't happenin with cigarettes. Plus, girls don't like stinky clothes, breath, bad teeth, etc.
And if you're cool with gettin lung cancer, emphysema (sp?), tracheotomoy, etc, by all means keep smoking, but I'd like to quit the thing that could lead me to having any of those.
Oh yea MONEY... if I quit smokin I'd have extra green...
^^oh yea and dude, that is fucking stupid. Tobacco users don't just smoke one here and there to relieve a headache like tylenol. Everything is bad for you if you abuse it, but you're talking apples and oranges. How many times a year do you use anasthesia? How many times a year do you smoke cigarettes? There's a diffrenece between a concentrated amount of "drugs" in a tylenol pill and a cigarette that has over 4000 chemicals in it, 37 of which cause cancer

nicotine floods your brain with dopamine mao b breaks down the dopamine smokers dont have enough mao b so its harder to quit. certain anti depressants will help with this
basically you want more dopamine in the nucleus accumbens
also as an aside major depression is a lot more common in smokers than non smokers. smokers with depression will have more cravings for longer periods of time, which further strengthens the connection with MAO. quitting can cause depression 11/10/2005 2:18:24 AM |

i agree health is an issue, but my point is..its really hard to quit "Suddenly" you have to do it gradually and just know why you are quitting and why you are smoking if its hard for you to quit.
btw..iam not a "smoker" who smokes like a pack or 2 a day...a pack usually lasts me about 3-5 days...a week at the max if iam busy.
for me a cigarette or even a bong (tobacco) for that matter is a luxury after hard work or in a social gathering...it gives you that Buzz and its just a "stress releiver" be it psycologically or whatever..but thats what it is for me...
but really think about the environment and the pollutuion and when your around others who smoke, dust and all...your inhaling all that everyday! so to say that just from smoking you can get lung cancer is ridiculous....
think of the mine people, the mechanics, ppl in factories etc...they have even a greater risk...
a cigarete has only a minute amt..so if your a "smoker" then yea youve been hit hard..but if your doing it occassionally then in my opinion i think youll be fine...sorry to say but eveyone is going to die...and death doesnt know age...
my philosophy is just live life and enjoy.. 11/10/2005 2:19:00 AM |

True, but jesus, if you had the chance to eliminate one of those causes wouldn't you? I mean that's why I choose not to work in the fucking mines!
Yea, enjoy life, but I think I can enjoy it even more if I quit smoking. I'll feel better each day, and way down the line I won't have severe health problems BEFORE I die. Smoking yourself to death isnt a quick process dude, and you'll most likely suffer from severe health problems before you die. I don't know about you but I dont consider that 'enjoying life'.11/10/2005 2:26:41 AM |

DiscGolfer _ DONT get me wrong, i feel as if aim trying to promote you to get back to smoking!!!! IAM NOT, please do your best to quit..if thats what you want and i completly respect, agree, and promote what you are doing. As for me i see it as a habit that i will eventually outgrow in the near future..but for now...iam enjoying it ...
To answer your question about eliminating the causes..seriously lets think logically for a minute..you and I know that that will never happen in our lifetime..its just there... yes we are trying with hybrid and crappy things like that..but as long as we have millions of people like myself who love power and would rather have gas rather than electric, and who are use to this and that (like you) then it wont happen...
pollutuion will stay with us, i wish it can be get rid of that easy t but its a longshot...very very looongshot from now.
^Yup..its just how my body function at this age of time 11/10/2005 2:39:56 AM |

Yea I gothcha, if you choose to do it, thats your perogative, I aint stoppin ya
As for the pollution comment, I was just trying to say that since that is pretty much inevitable, why increase your health risks by smoking, working in the mines, etc.
It sounded to me that you were saying since there already is pollution, it's fine to go ahead and smoke cigarettes anyways and just say fuck it because we are already breathing in harmful stuff. Well my point is, I'd like to stop smoking to decrease the amount of harmful substances entering my lungs, thus decreasing the chance of health risks later in life. 11/10/2005 2:54:14 AM |

(Seriouse non-sarcastically) GO FOR IT, i wish you good luck on that man!
but no i meant to live life and enjoy and that thats not the main reason for having lung cancer..there are other environmental effects that may cause this, but in a way yea its sounds like that... like i said its like a "luxury" in a sense... for me after a really stressed day.
i personally dont like to take drugs and pills (predcription)
I have also never smoked anything other than tobbacco and never will....
again..Good luck and keep us updated...who knows maybe soon i might follow your footsteps...

Haha, probably a smart idea to stay away from the drugs at least...I used to do all kinds of shit all the time. Over the past two years I've completely phased out everything but cigarettes, alcohol, and caffeine. So I feel confident I can kick the nicotine, its just a matter of time. Can't go giving up everything all at once, or you'll go crazy... and that's one way to begin a binge... 11/10/2005 3:13:26 AM |
