sickening... seriously, and not even just her but the entire American church these days. Its just embarassing.
We're holding a gathering over at Meredith on January 14th at 7 o'clock to basically deconstruct all this American church crap. Check it out: http://www.unbuckle.org
Basically a guy is coming to speak for a bit and then the floor is opened up for questions (anonymous and on-the-spot questions). There's a free concert at the end: Starting Tuesday is the band http://www.startingtuesday.com 12/3/2005 11:48:18 PM |

well, i grew up in a church background, and i know events like this usually stay within the "church circle", and usually any non-appealing facts will be omitted, save the big points like virginity and whatnot. i also know that "balanced" is considered a dirty word in most churches (or the ones i was in), and it usually means having to hear from a side you dont want to hear from. you cant act like that side doesnt exist, and sometimes, they could be telling you more truth about life than what youve been taught through church (notice i said "church" not "god", "christianity, or "the bible"; or any religion for that matter). sometimes it takes a real challenge to your faith, and true self-examination, to really get what you need to get out of christianity. it took me leaving the organized church for me to learn god's truth for myself. its full of too much bs from all sides these days for anyone to really achieve any true peach, imho.

I think this event is pretty much the exact opposite of what you've experienced with the church. The goal is to fill the place with people who are frustrated or angry with the church. The only reason we'd encourage Christians to go is so they too can understand what's wrong with many organized churches today.. especially in the Bible Belt.. and expose some of the misconceptions around Christianity (i.e. Christian does not equal republican) I doubt virginity will even be brought up actually. This is more of an intellectual than emotional thing. To get more of an idea of where we're going with it, check out http://www.donaldmillerwords.com/resources.php and read some excerpts from his books. Also, check out http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/031026345X/102-5792619-4474559?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance and read the editor's note
Post modern Christianity is a pretty new concept that hasn't really hit the Bible Belt yet. 12/4/2005 12:30:00 AM |

chembob Yankee Cowboy 27011 Posts user info edit post |
well, obviously, if Christianity "has" to become "post-modern," somethings weird. I understand the world is changing, but it always has been changing - but Christianity at its core has never needed to change.
but thats probably not what you meant by it, I'm sure. 12/4/2005 12:47:56 AM |
Kayti All American 1019 Posts user info edit post |
Correct. That's not what I meant and I suppose we could argue postmodernity all night but what I am refering to as "post-modern Christianity" is a deconstruction of what the "church" has built up to be what is known as Christianity today and a reconstruction of the original intentions of the faith.
It goes farther than adding a guitar or a hip young preacher. It questions every act and motivation of the church and its doctrine. It encourages questioning and doubt.
(I can't tell if I'm making sense any more. It's been a long week and it's way past my bedtime)

uh, no, thats where we lock all the youth in the church so they are away from parties and debauchery

how do you know that Jesus did not exist? There is far more evidence to support Christianity than to support the turtles claim. Also, you asking me to prove the turtle thing is the same stance I am taking about Christian beliefs. So you prove to me that God and Jesus do not exist, since you are so eager to accept the notion of turtles ruling the universe.

I don't, just like I don't know if he was god's son, just like I don't know if turtles cause the world to spin. Just because I don't know if it's true doesn't mean I should assume it to be true.

Really? What? I've yet to see anyone rise from the dead, or heal the blind, or walk on water. All your religion has going for it over the turtle theory is one old book.

You know, there are many sources that reference God and Jesus.........and the bible is not a book, its a collection of different materials from many different time periods in case you forgot.

I'm not saying I don't believe that a man named jesus probably did exist. I'm also not saying that everything in the Bible (Or whatever other source you're talking about) is incorrect.
I was addressing her saying that many sources "reference god," as if this is some sort of proof of his/her/its existence. 12/4/2005 6:13:21 PM |
