i'm not going to be pretentious enough to say "best episode of TV ever", but here's a great Seinfeld episode. Everyone remembers Man Hands, and i think everyone remembers The Bizarro Jerry also, but most people forget that those 2 plots were actually in the same episode! 2 other genius subplots in that single episode include Kramer gets a job at an office ("what do you have in the briefcase?" Kramer:"Crackers!"), and it's where George uses a picture of Man Hands as his dead fiance to gain entry to a secret nightclub for models, which at the end of the show ends up being an old meat packing plant (of course we see the picture on the floor as they leave).

But I agree also with whoever said Buffy - Hush, and I would add Buffy - Restless, where they go through a series of the character's dreams.

A better pick for me would be the Carnivale season 1 finale, "The Day That Was the Day". It was fucking wonderful.

^ from a writing standpoint it was a great episode, but it is really sad.

Nah. I have seen at least a dozen episodes of that show randomly and have pretty much despised them all. So I don't bother putting myself through mysery looking for that off-chance that there will be a good episode.

Yeah, this was also mentioned on the first page. At the end of the TNG franchise this episode was voted to be the best and it won a few awards.

Both parts were extremely well done.

^ Yes. I think "Best of Both Worlds" could be a serious contender, at least considered "Best Sci-Fi TV Episode ever."

I would also like to mention:

The Simpsons: "Lemon of Troy"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemon_of_Troy

A surprisingly outstanding self-contained storyline with a good mix of humor and drama.

the simpsons are so hit and miss. sometimes they aim for just funny or just dramatic.

lately though they have given up on plot shows like lemon of troy, but amazing the simpsons have produced some very good non-comedy shows over the years

Friends: the one that didn't suck

.... oh wait....

ok, fine - i admit it - i used to watch and enjoy Friends, but it's been probably 8 years since I watched any and found them good, and 6 years since i've basically found them revolting.
I can never remember a time where I walked away from a Friends episode with the feeling of "wow - what an excellent 1/2 hour of TV. The jokes were on, the timing was great, there was good emotion, etc", like I have with Seinfeld, Buffy, Arrested Development, The Office, 24

^^it was all downhill since the monkey left.

btw, someone mentioned the saddest episode on tv ever. I think that goes to the Hogan Family where the friend of the family caught and died from AIDS all in the same show.
