the longbow has been wildly overrated
it wasn't new weapon by any means and composite bows were more powerful per draw weight
like with swiss pikemen, what mattered was the men, not the weapon
and bow was far less important in european warfare than the pike 11/15/2005 10:13:33 PM |

yeah, i'm gonna have to agree with the AK people
i mean, those things cost like $0.58 a piece to mass produce
i can't imagine a conflict in the last 20-30 years where AT LEAST one side's forces are not using AK's 11/16/2005 12:14:34 AM |

as the question is worded i'd have to go with A-bomb, because it has influenced every single major altercation since it was invented, 11/16/2005 12:52:17 AM |

as i said, as the question is worded i think a-bomb is the best, but if you change the question just a little, it could be ruled out 11/16/2005 1:02:48 AM |

We now have 100% capability to exterminate ourselves and apparently everyone in this thread is overlooking the massive dump of shit we'll be in if a terrorist detonates one in a major city. 11/16/2005 1:35:12 PM |

The threat is there, surely enough. But how much effect have they really had? Yes, they've prevented numerous conflicts, and ended one, but I think weapons that are never used pale in comparison to weapons that have conquered 3/5th of the planet. 11/16/2005 2:39:15 PM |

I agree 100%. If you don't think so, go reread a bit of history. Guns never changed the course of the world. Comparing shit like settling the west or invading S. America doesn't come close to the wars where the longbow dominated entire armies.11/16/2005 4:39:07 PM |

^^ I don't agree with your choice, but I agree with your reasoning.
The winner needs to be a weapon that profoundly changed history; not one that simply revolutionized combat. A weapon that enabled a civilization to do something that changed history forever.
Hence,
Mongolian mounted archer.
English longbow is Eurocentric. 11/16/2005 4:44:33 PM |

thats pretty much the reasoning behind the stirrup. before its invention, it was just infantry. with the stirrup, it lead to cavalry and knights, to name just a couple variations of troops, that ultimately changed the face of war AND led to the domination of europe for a couple hundred years or so.11/16/2005 5:36:56 PM |
