I'm sure the school would consider your app but there is no way a person is jumping from a score in the 130s to a 175.12/21/2005 6:02:00 PM |

My friend jumped 15 points, but he had bad testing conditions the first time. He has the highest increase that i have heard of.
His second score would have gotten him a nice scholarship, but they averaged it and he got nothing. 12/22/2005 11:00:09 AM |

^ yeah same here. had to drive to goldsboro to take it because i signed up at the last minute. also didn't study for it at all. i'm hoping when i take it again in februray things will be different what with the prep course i'm taking and all to get ready. haha although i doubt i'll go up 15 points, thats great for your friend though. 12/22/2005 11:11:18 AM |

15 points is a far cry from a 26+ point jump. Even without studying (or having ever seen the exam) a person who has the potential to score a 175 is not going to score in the 130s. 12/22/2005 6:16:34 PM |

It really is ridiculous how much the LSAT is weighted. If you goto the LSAC page that I told him to go to you notice how one sided it is. I'm just looking at a Tier III/IV even like Pacific (near my parents place -- didn't apply there) and the stats regardless of GPA
LSAT > 154 -> 899 admitted/1068 applied = 84.1% rate of admission LSAT =< 154 -> 114 admitted/2361 applied = .04% rate of admission
Now looking at an upper level school like Boston College (where I did apply)
LSAT => 160 -> 1209 admitted/4148 applied = 29.1% LSAT < 160 -> 96 admitted/3651 applied = .002%

Campbell had a visting professor from Howard last year. Heard she was a nightmare and would keep standing up different people and and asking the same questions and getting the same responses. In the end, she would sit them down and move on and not comment/correct/acknowledge anything that was said.
She taught out of one particular hornbook that the students figured out half way through the first year. When she realized this, she got mad and banned the book from class.
Hope you don't have to take her class. 1/13/2006 10:52:06 PM |

Now I'm just waiting for decisions. I applied to UNC (again and I probably won't attend even if I get in), Rutgers-Newark, Cardozo, Seton Hall (backup), Univ. of San Francisco, and Pacific (backup)...
I'll let you guys know when I hear.. I think a lot will depend on what kind of scholly's I get.. I may settle for a lower tier school if I get a 1/2-full ride..

I currently work at the patent office and am getting my ass kicked. your eng skills count for diddly for patent savvy beyond the fact that they're evidence that you've gotten your ass kicked once and you're nerdy enough to sweat the details of something. I took a kaplan course last year and did as well as 154 on practice tests then got a 144 on the october 05 exam. I'm taking it again in february. I have a 3.51 gpa in mech eng.... Also, I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I get into UNC. Got a pretty good LSAT, but a horrible GPA in ME.... and I know UNC is really big on the GPA 1/22/2006 8:47:14 AM |

Who are you interviewing with? The interviews are very relaxed sessions. A student will show you around first and take you to the professor for the interview. Anyone can have a good gpa or lsat, but sometimes you need to make sure the person has a personality. 1/23/2006 6:41:39 PM |

Definitely retake it and study your ass off for it. Go to the DH Hill and get some of those practice books, and take practice test after practice, just keep doing them until you've done them all. Then take a day's break or something, and then take the test.
I had a 166 and 3.37 and got into UGA Law with a 75% scholarship - get that LSAT score up and you should be good. your GPA is good.2/2/2006 6:26:39 PM |

a 3.5 in Mech E with anything above a 155 should get you into a LOT of schools. Campbell will probably even be within reach with the PBAP program with what you have now. Just make sure to do significantly better IF you retake the LSAT. Law Schools generally don't like it when you only go up about 5 points. 2/3/2006 9:06:19 AM |

^^^ they might offer you the admission with the summer program req -- can't remember exactly what it is but that is what I was offered before I graduated (my GPA was still a shade under 3.0 at that point since I made a 4.25 my last semester in school) when I first applied. Obviously I didn't go there because it made no sense for someone who either wants to work in Manhattan or the Bay Area...
Quote : | "a 3.5 in Mech E with anything above a 155 should get you into a LOT of schools." |
Since they redid the admissions index around 2000 this might not be the case. In the past schools weighted GPA like 40+%. Now most are in the 15-20% range (UNC still weights GPA over 30% IIRC) so genious fuckups in college who have the ability to standardize test well are at a decided advantage. Someone like me who had a shade over 2.0 midway through college who straightened up and tested well on the LSAT is, unfairly in my opinion, going to get more offers from better schools then someone who consistently made 3.5-3.7 with a bit lower LSAT.
It's just the way it works when Law Schools are more worried about Tier ranking then what the actual students will contribute. HOWEVER, I have changed 100% since the time my grades blew so I'll add a lot wherever I'm accepted to!

apps in to NCCU, Campbell, Charlotte School of Law and Charleston School of law. I'm sputtering on UNC's personal statement reqs... stalling me for other things b/c I put UNC above the rest of the other schools I want to apply to so I don't want to put it off, but at the same time, my "crummy" personal statement that will work for some schools probably isn't enough for unc. If I could work on this shit away from my house it'd be ok because then I wouldn't be as distracted, but the apps require a plugin I can't install at work... I dunno, I'm just nervous and treading water. I think I kicked ass on the feb 06 lsat, but that still likely only means like a 157 at best, more likely a 151 (+-2pts). If I get a 148 or lower, I think I may rethink the law school thing altogether... I really don't need to launch myself into a career where I'd be going in knowing that I'm not competitive.... 2/14/2006 12:49:22 AM |
NyM410 J-E-T-S 50085 Posts user info edit post |
Just some friendly advice. I'd get that app to UNC done as quickly as possible. It's a very competitive school, which weights GPA more then about any I've seen for their index (I've read up to 30% where most are around 18%) so that may help you with a mid to high 150's LSAT.. Everything is rolling admission, so they won't tell you it will be any different admission rate but MOST people apply Jan-Feb so it'll be hard.. on top of that it can take over a month to go 'complete' at some of the more competitive admission schools..
** Also, one thing I've learned speaking to people who have graduated law school, if you are willing to put in the work/extracurriculars (like Law Review if you are in the Top 15-20%) you can get a good job no matter what school you go to. I know a Tier IV graduate in PA that was in the Top 15% of his class and got a great job in a mid-large size firm in Philly making upwards of $95,000 entry. Good jobs aren't ONLY for Ivy League kids but you have to work VERY HARD if you want one going to a lower school. I'm also quite skeptical about going to a school that hasn't been ABA approved yet (Charleston for instance) simply because that is an awfully expensive gamble to take in my opinion..

Its hard to find a job as a 1L, unless you want to work for free or $2 an hour. A lot of peole are starting to interview. Some of my friends have found jobs.
I'm thinking about summer school (Con Law and Tax). A lot of campbell students clerk at SC or COA in the Spring. Campbell has required courses (evidence, con law II, app ad, ethics, wills) so its a really bad semester.
I have a few options for legal work for either the whole summer or after summer school

This is all true. However, everyone in your class will think he/she has what it takes to be top 10% and get onto law review. Hard work isn't always enough. Don't enter a school and pay lots of money with the expection of a 95K job. You can probably count on two hands the number of kids at a particular Tier 4 school who get paid close to 6 figures at graduation. That is especially true if you go to a tier 4 in a smaller legal market (like South Carolina).
BTW, before you commit to a school like Charleston, call them and ask what percentage of grads are employed (have they even had a graduating class yet?), and the average starting salary for grads. Also, get a list of where thier students summered. It's not enough to get a list of where the top 10% summered. Sometimes even the hardest working kids end up in the bottom half of a class, and you want to know you can still find legal work and pay off the loans.
Quote : | "Where are you 1Ls and 2Ls working this summer? I am currently unemployed " |
I graduated last May but my first summer I clerked in a US Attorney's Office. If you can afford to work for free it's a great experience. Make sure part of your summer involves something legal, even if its classes or study abroad. Otherwise potential employers will question why someone didn't hire you.2/14/2006 8:01:00 PM |

brand new. not aba approved. I think it might be cool, assuming I don't get into many other places. I have fam/friends in Charlotte who I could leave with on the cheap, and since it's new, they'll probably be picking up whatever students they can, so maybe I'd have a better shot at a relatively high rank, although I bet everyone who seriously considers it is thinking the same thing.
