Iron and Wine
Of Montreal
The Arcade Fire
Bright Eyes is one of my least favorite bands out there. Connor Oberst: you are not any more talented than any other artist you are competing with in your genre. Give it up.

What is annoying to me is when people listen to these bands just to act like they're cool and know something everyone else doesn't, even if the bands aren't great... Whatever floats their boats, I guess...

^how do you discern between someone who just really likes the band though? Bright Eyes has a number of songs i like. not my favorite artist, but there is good stuff there in my opinion. i also really like Architecture in Helsinki and the Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! and the New Pornographers and some of the other stuff listed in this thread. do i like them because some label what they do indie? No, i like them for the reason that i like all the music i listen, because it either makes me think, makes me want to sing along, makes my head bob, or my makes my ass shake.

i'm mostly just angry at wknc's dj automation for playing the same 20 bands over and over like an indie g105

haha, i love most of these bands. dont diss it just cause you arent smart/cool enough to get it. everyone loves to love something for its cool factor. but some (new pornographers, those people who moan instead of sing) i dont like. there are standards, even in indie.

guided by voices
mountain goats
polyphonic spree
hot hot heat
of montreal ( & i don't need to know more than 1 song by them - that one song i know sux so bad )
rainer maria
mates of state

slater kinney
magnetic fields

[Edited on December 14, 2005 at 10:58 PM. Reason : & i would add belle & sabastien but i do like 1 song of theirs]

Now, I like almost every band that's been mentioned in this thread, but

HOW CAN ANYBODY NOT LIKE SLEATER-KINNEY?!?

dude - tell me a good song of theirs & i'm willing to check it out...... i LOVED the band Denali but i have never liked anything i've heard from rainer maria & slater that 88.1 plays....

my formula = if i like atleast 1 song, i can not say that i "can't stand" the band.....
however, if even 1 song by the band is shitty enough, it can cause me to loathe the band so much that i don't care to hear more from them..... ( i.e. Of Montreal

I wouldn't put any two of Denali, Rainer Maria, or Sleater-Kinney in any sort of grouping, but I ESPECIALLY wouldn't put S-K in with the other two. For what it's worth, I dislike Denali and like a few Rainer Maria songs. I would recommend basically any of their music, but there's a good deal of variety to it. I'm partial to their last two albums, especially the newest one if you like some fucking dirt in your music. I'd definitely recommend just torrenting One Beat or The Woods to start with, especially if you aren't a big fan of riot stuff in general.

And just out of curiosity, what the Of Montreal song you hate so much? I got into them when I was in my big e6 phase, and I still like them, but I would never have guessed that they would have gotten so popular.

Rilo Kiley-didn't like their songs when I heard them, then saw them opening for Coldplay and they were HORRIBLE. Songs sucked, voices were off,and no stage presence whatsoever. Ugh...

Well, Jenny Lewis is one of the sexiest women I've ever seen.

So there.

(Also, keep in mind that they always sound fine when they're at teh Cradle. Bigass venues don't tend to give a shit about the sound of the openers in my limited experience with them.)

^its been said a million times, rilo kiley is not an amphitheatre band and did not translate well at all to that sort of venue/crowd. go see them at the cats cradle and then see if you can bitch about their stage presence

Haha.

Of Montreal has way worse song titles than that. I was going to go look up some of them from Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse, but allmusic's database cuts that shit off at like 64 characters.

I recommend "Tim, I Wish You Were Born a Girl". Because it's gay.

Or real recommendations would be maybe "Lysergic Bliss" or "Requiem for O.M.M2". But, like I said, they're not for everyone.

I'm not a big fiery furnaces fan.

I like most the bands mentioned though. not all are my absolute favorites, but I like most of em.

and must my two cents, but I think the unicorns "who will cut our hair when we're gone" is one of the best albums of the last five years.
